I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! It really is The Happiest Place on Earth!!!! Even the feeling yuk from chicken pox miraculously disappeared (unfortunately the spots did not) and we had one of the best days ever ever ever. From the moment you walk in its like a fairytale world- a whole other land where everything, the food, the music, the vehicles, the uniforms is Disney and of course, because we were in Japan everything was super clean and the detail amazing. It was hot- but of course the Disney people had thought of that and during Summer there is a special ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! In Japanese 'mushi' means 'insect', and is most commonly heard in a kindergarten classroom or playground in the middle of Summer, with the child pointing at the insect in question. If the said insect is a spider, butterfly or any other of the thirty five million bug species in Japan the call "mushi mushi " is greeted with excitement. If the insect turns out to be your typical, stock standard Louie the fly, the reaction will be more like sheer terror, mass chaos and possibly tears. No kidding, the kids hate flies, but will gladly go ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! Summer in Japan is fireworks season- you can buy them everywhere, convenience stores, supermarkets and the Lemon Shop, no matter how old you are. The kindy kids were even allowed to light them at their sleepover- admittedly these were not much better than sparklers but it still made me nervous!!! The Japanese call fireworks, and the festivities surrounding them hanabi- and on the 29th of July there was a festival on the Abe River- culminating in a 2 hour firework display!!! So, seeing as how we looooove a Japanese Festival and I looooove fireworks we went ... read more

And this truly will be a stretch of the memoirs, as I have a major back blog (ha ha get it!!) of journals to write and since this trip to Kyoto I have been to Disneyland, Tokyo, Hokkaido, and back to Kyoto again! For all those that are not living as aliens in Japan, gaijin is the special name we foreigners are given, and it literally means alien- our identification card here is called our alien registration!!! Does it make any one else think of Third Rock from the Sun- great show!!! Anyway, back to Kyoto, ... read more

Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » Mt Fuji July 8th 2006

I dont know where to start- the clouds, the sunrise, the height, the pain, the cold, the wind or the stick, but I do want to say- I CLIMBED MT FUJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hang on, lets put that in bold writing I CLIMBED MT FUJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was one of the things that was on my 'What I want to do in Japan' list before I even arrived and while I was not sure I could do it I knew that I would always feel like I should have if I didnt. It took some convincing Marissa that it was something we could do, but once her brother was on board, plus a new found Japanese friend, Hide (Hee-de) it was all systems go. There is a Japanese proverb that says 'He who climbs Mount Fuji once is a ... read more

Hi Rob :-) So I've been in this crazy mixed up beautiful country for three months now- that means a quarter of my time is over and its time for a bit of insight into what life is like on a day to day basis- not when we are being tourists, but when we are living and teaching in a foreign country. So.... heres some of the crazy mixed up things that make you realise your in Japan... Only in Japan - would someone lean out of their car window while driving and offer me an umbrella when I was walking in the rain. - would you buy green tea and bean paste flavoured Kit Kats - would you watch cartoons at 11.00 at night - would you see women riding bikes in high heels and ... read more

Can you believe that a Japanese person asked us this!!!- so where's the blue in the Japanese flag huh!! And that was before we thrashed them so the loss hadnt clouded their intelligence yet!!! But oh well, lets not be too down on the Japanese, they do have a MASSIVE LOSS to overcome!!!!!!!! Before we go any further there is something that needs to be said....................................... Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi!!!!!!!!!!! And believe me this was said many times during the night the Australians heroically paved their way to victory. But lets start at the ... read more

Hi Rob!!!! :-) Tokyo Asakusa On the weekend of the 9th of June Marissa sensei and I headed to the big city!! Actually more than big, it was bloody massive!!! We headed down on the Shinkansen on Friday night, just missing the Hikari train (the faster one) and so having to catch the Kodama (that stops at all stations and meant we arrived at tokyo station when we should have been arriving at our hostel). But after wandering around a little bit lost for awhile we caught the right subways and trains to Asakusa (not to be confused with another suburb called Akasuka!!) and our friendly hostel manager was waiting up for us. They only opened for business on the 1st of June so I dont think they wouldve locked us out!! The hostel was beautiful, ... read more

It started with daquiris, they got us in the mood, Then a bus ride to Chatty and Blake made us some food. We stocked up on beers then a short taxi ride, Waiting at the bus stop, sitting side by side. We arrived at the party and knocked on the door, And added our shoes to the pile on the floor. Some Aussies, some Kiwis and Japanese brides, This is who greeted us when we walked inside. A house warming party, an Australian plant we brought, Us bloody loud Aussies, or so others thought. Thrown out of the party, the neighbours too close, So Blake entertained us throwing his bike into posts. Walking down back streets without a care, Blake couldnt resist Haren's dare Straight up the wall and into a tree, It could've turned into ... read more

Picnic time My class, the Panda class made up of 3 and 4 year olds went for a (longish) walk and had a picnic in a beautiful park. I am happy to report that not all of the playgrounds here are as small as MEK's, and the equipment at this one was excellent, and there was plenty of room for the kids to run around. There was also the biggest bees I have ever seen, (they were seriously the size of a small bird as are the butterflies here), but thats another story. Next weeks excursion is a potato digging day and barbeque with the parents so I'm not really sure what thats all about but I'm sure there wil be photos!! This week we are making clocks because it is the anniversary of Greenwich mean ... read more
