Now that we're rested, showered, and coherent, I can write more about our experience on the Inca Trail. But first, let me back up to the days just before we started the trek. Peru had their presidential election last Sunday, which we were unaware of until we arrived in Cusco and tried to order a beer. Apparently, Peru government institutes a dry law during election time, and restaurants, liquor stores, etc are unable to serve any type of alcohol, regardless of your residency. Fortunately for us, our hotel stocked our fridge ahead of time with some beer and wine. We were also able to convince an Italian restaurant to serve us one glass of wine each in a water glass instead of a wine glass. The chef is Italian, so I think he understood... It was ... read more

I am writing from a small pizzeria in Aguas Calientes, a town near Machu Picchu, waiting for the train with our entire group that traveled with us. We had the most amazing group of people in our group, and they always kept us uplifted throughout the difficult journey up 14,000 ft mountain peaks, down those peaks, and back up another. I was very sick the second day, which of course was the hardest day, but we made it!!! It was worth every second. More to come tomorrow, probably... I have to rejoin our celebration party. Hasta luego, Shannon ... read more

Justin's Entry (In Case you can't tell by the writing), Today Shannon dragged my fat ass up another 1000 vertical feet above where we are staying currently. Wouldn't be bad if we weren't walking from 11,000ft to 12,000ft in less than 2 miles. It was a good test I guess for the trail ahead starting Monday. We did get to see a 20,000 ft mountain in the distance covered with snow. I've never seen a mountain that big in my life. We also saw Alpacas all over the place. We hiked up to what is called Saqsaywaman. Ancient capital of the Inca. The walls were huge. Check out the video. Please pay attention to the wild animals I caught roaming the area. Quite spectacular to say the least. Adios Amigos.... read more

Buenos dias de Cusco! After a jet lagged night in Lima, we are thrilled to be in the ancient city of Cusco, far from all the chaos a huge third world city like Lima generates. We booked the perfect hotel in Lima, though, tucked within it's own garden walls to distract from noise and hustle of the city. We also had our first Peruvian meal at the hotel, Aji de Gallena, (which was delicioso!) shredded chicken in a gravy-cream- like sauce, complemented with fried potatoes with cheese in the middle and white rice. Our apartment in Cusco couldn't be more perfect. Check out the photos on the hotel's site http://quinua.com.pe/english.php or watch the video we posted. We're staying in the Taripay Wasi room first, then the Pukara Wasi room at the end of our trip. The ... read more
