Europe May 8th 2014

Kastoria It was a very long day, crosssing three borders and getting through Albania, which has risen to new heights as my least favorite European country. The earliest of us got in just before dark having a 12 hour day. The last of the group arrived after 9PM. kastoria is supposed to be scenic, but we didn't see much of it. We did have some excitement driving the wrong way on a skinny one way steep street just to finish off a fun day. Tomorrow we cross Greece and get ready to enter Turkey.... read more

Dubrovnik After two days of really nice twisty driving along the Dalmation coast we have reached Dubrovnik. The weather has been nearly perfect and the scenery is fantastic. The traffic was really bad, and it isn't even tourist season yet. We go through Greece the next two days to get to Istanbul, and the real start of the adventure.... read more

Slovenia Third day, third country. After driving modt of the way across Germany and across Austria and then down a tiny road following a truck too big to get around the corners, we are in the very scenic town of Bled. The hotel overlooks the lake. The weather got a little warmer today, and we have had clear skies most of the time. Driving in Europe is really expensive, gas is nearly $10/gal, and the tolls are worse. We are pretty much done with getting across Europe, so tomorrow we do a little less driving, and a little more looking. I am having a terrible time doing this. It has taken over an hour to do this small entry. It just keeps crashing, and I can't upload photos either.... read more

Ulm Some more motorway driving and then some nice country roads led us to Ulm. It is a really nice setting with the tallest steeple in Germany, or maybe that was in Europe. The upper Danube flows through town. It is very picturesque, and quite peaceful compared to driving on the motorway. One of the Thai guys had a minor crash today, but nothing was hurt on the body or the bike.... read more

Almost ready to leave I arrived in London April 29 after an uneventful flight. My motorcycle was on its way from London to Felixstowe, 125 miles from where I was supposed to pick it up and 100 miles farther away from where it was on Sunday. In order to get it in time, Roddy, the local freight guy, hauled me out ro Felixstowe so I could ride it back to London. I managed to stay on the correct side of the road the entire way, and only got slightly lost. How did we ever get anywhere without a GPS? It looks like the biggest problem so far is over. If the cold rain will quit, ridingmwill be nicer. I am off to see the British Museum today, and what ever else I have time for.... read more

London to Xian 2014 I am getting ready to start the London to Xian motorcycle trip next week. We will be traveling through Europe to Turkey, and then on through Central Asia to China. We traverse much of the Silk Road (one of several paths through Central Asia and Western China). I have been waiting for years to see Eastern Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, especially Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent, and Almaty. We also traverse much of Western China. To date, my biggest headache has been motorcycle shipping. Although it was supposed to be in London by now, my motorcycle is sitting on a ship parked in the North Sea at this time. I hope I have it by the time the trip starts on May 2.... read more
