With this blog we are all caught up. The YHA hostel in Hervey Beach is really great...better than a lot of hotels we've stayed at. Tennis courts, swimming pool, really nice community space, good hot showers, great staff and most important at this point is fast Internet with USB ports. We are staying here the two nights either side of the two days and night on Fraser Island. Got up to have breakfast and be picked up for our tour of Fraser Island. It is a world heritage area set aside because of it uniqueness. Approximate 475,000 acres of sand...largets sand island in the world. Supposedly 600 feet deep and as high as 600 feet above sea level. We had thought of renting a 4WD drive, but the people at YHA suggested against it...they should ... read more

We arrived at an Airlie Beach hostel around sunset last night, and were greeted by what sounded like a butch of fighting cats. Found out they were Flying Foxes... bats, and big ones 24-30" wing spans. They were fighting over some of the fruit in the trees around the complex. We shared our breakast with a bunch of parrots, then took a wonderful hike to a remote coral beach. Couldn't help but talking a picture of the proper ladies participating in a bowling tournament. While drive we saw that Gladstone had a good botanical garden, so stopped..it was wonderful.. botanical gardens here seem to be a combination of botanical garden, public park and bird sancuary. We took a really nice hike through the rainforest portion. The tree picture shows one tree with aerial roots that ... read more

Our late afternoon flight was uneventful and we arrived in good time to arrange another two days on our car rental. We've decided to drive up to Cape Tribulation...everyone talks about the beaches. We are staying at the hostel for two nights so we can focus on a full day on the reef. It was interesting to drive up north of Cairns, you can't see much because there is sugar can everywhere, right up to the road right of way. The white seed heads are really pretty in the morning sun. We made our usual stop at a quaint little cafe for coffee and breakfast and head off for a boat tour to see the infamous crocs. We were told by some on our safari that the boat trips are all about the same so ... read more

Boy there is a lot to cover here, so many KM to cover today. We all wanted to jump out and get a picture to show we have finally made it to the Northern Territory. Not enough people to handle this huge area of land so it's not a state. Then we saw the Rock!!!...nope it was "Fool-a-ru" or Mt. Conner. It is twice the size of Uluru, but because it is made of two kinds of sandstone it's not a monolith. But it's not long until the real Uluru (white man says Ayers Rock) is in site. We made it just right to see it at sunset and drink a glass of champaign. Upon arrival at the campground we see all the excitemenet...a big brush fire..we hope it's under control. Our tent accommodations are ... read more

By second day we were beginning to consider everyone a new friend....packed in a bus, sharing meals and kitchen duties, and using neccessities of life together tends to do that. A couple from Sweden, nurse from Holland, guy and girl from Germany, a girl from Maine, an asian girl who grew up in Melbourne, (all twenty something)and a Kiwi, Les, the old guy on the trip, celebrating his 60th birthday by retracing his single days in Alice. Erica was our leader, she's got a great playlist (read Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler/ and more) on her MP3 player, so we know we're going to like her....not to mention we are always headed north and right into the sun...glad she's driving. Up at 5:30am for breakfast and headed to Wilpena Pound for a good hike. A really interesting ... read more

We are on the otherside of the outback portion of our trip. I didn't expect to have WWW access for that week, but we still have not been able to find an internet cafe with a USB port or card reader for picture upload...unbelievable. We could find it in the most remote villages in Guatemala. Anyway we may be able to hook up at Hervey Bay tomorrow...we'll see. You will enjoy reading of our great adventures...Ruth has been a real trooper!! We were surprised to pick up the morning paper and see it dated July 4th...weird to have no evidence of it here...we have totally lost track of what day it is. Well, we need to go, Crocodile Dave is picking us up in a few minutes for a day's tour of the offerings of Rockhampton ... read more

Up bright and early for the start of our outback safari from Adelaide to Alice Springs...3000 KM!! ...glad someone else is driving especially since we are driving NE right into the sun. We were also pleased that only 10 people signed up rather than the typical 24, so we have plenty of room in the bus to spread out and relax. We are headed to Parachilna by way of the Flinders Ranges National Park. Our first stop was for some wine testing in the a little pub. There signage best represents the Aussies sense of humor and speak frankily about the most practical issues of life. Lunch at a public picnic area at the side of the road. In AUS they provide a gas grill which is coin operated and make cooking easy. We are ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide June 22nd 2007

The morning gave us the opportunity to grab the free bus and get the lay of the land. Adelaide is a perfect example of someone really doing a great job of laying out a straight forward grid system with prominent "squares," but....traffic engineers have managed to make a mess of it with one way streets and no turn designations. Anyway, we're really likeing the AUS cities. they have a lot of character and plenty to do. And they have an amzing amount of greenspace that really gets used. The free bus system lets us tourist get a handle on things. Off to the Botanical garden. I really enjoyed seeing all the classes of kids in the gardens and they were all wearing hats. This garden is only a couple of years newer than Melbourne..they are ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Kangaroo Island June 22nd 2007

Once we felt comfortable that we had slipped the authorities in Mount Gambier, we could enjoy the country side. It was raining off and on again and it was not long until we could check off our daily rainbow. Then we got stopped by a ferry river crossing that was not shown on the maps, but that gave me time to snap my daily windmill shot. Before long the scenery really changed to flat, and I mean reall y flat. Stopped for a bite to eat in a really quaint little town and shot one of the many stone churches...they are gorgeous. The country side then turned to what for a lack of anything else...a golf course that went on forever...it was beautiful. Shot a picture of Kangaroo Island before sunset, and one as we left ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road June 21st 2007

The day started out looking pretty bad...cloud cover and raining. We are headed for the Great Ocean road and hope for some good weather. The first glimpses of the coast in the rain has it's own beauty and intrigue. There is a bush walk into the rainforest so we put on our rainjackets and head out. It was amazing to see the mosses and ferns growing on everything. The Twelve Apostle stone formations are as grand as everyone describes. You just want to sit and gaze. You may notice a pile of stones in one picture...one fell in July, 2005...there are eight left. Another picture shows an arch, in the 90's a stone arch collapsed leaving some startled tourists on the wrong side. Words cannot describe this section of the south seashore. It was intriguing ... read more
