A day at the horse races in my mind is summed up by the scene in My Fair Lady. I picture women flaunting long elegant dresses, pearl necklaces and fluttering feathers, lace parasols, and gliding through the crowds with crystal champagne glasses. And those hats! They looked like the four most exquisite hats on Easter Sunday all piled onto one head. However, only once in the ten-minute-scene do they even looked at the race track. Binoculars raised as the horse speed by just feet in front of them. If these races were anything like that, I was ready. My stomach swirled with excitement as Jhene and I drove onto the property. The one lane road brought us past neon vests ushering us to the carpark, which the day before was just a field of grazing sheep. ... read more

Driving onto the vineyard at Big Sky Wines, the trees in the rearview mirror engulf the airborne dust of the gravel road. Hills surrounding the Te Muna Valley sit in the distance like curious observers, as the clouds unfold opening into a faded, blue jean sky above. Stepping out of the car, the gentle heat of the sun floods over the vibrant green of the Pinot Noir vines. On my way to the house, their bushy arms wave joyfully in the wind as if to say, “Hey there! We are awaiting our summer leaf plucking.” In the month of January, Jhene and I got to spend almost three weeks vineyard sitting in Martinborough, home of New Zealand's finest Pinot Noir crop. We met Katherine Jacobs and Jeremy Corban, the owners, winemakers and viticulturists for Big Sky, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington December 31st 2014

Exploring the North Island was addictive. Tramping through the bush in Karekare, my soul craved the opportunity to explore open spaces, to climb over other unknown cliffsides, and sleep again under the unfamiliar celestial sphere. Pitching my tent in Coromandel, a desire to be a nomad connected eternally to the road swelled in my gut. Hearing the stories of full-time travelers living in a hostel in Rotorua, I thought that I too could just skip town to town, get work, explore, and then move along and repeat. Each new place I visited, the inevitability of settling down constantly lingered in the back of my mind. Not far behind that was a counter thought repeatedly whispering: Do you? ...really? Despite my craving to endlessly wander, I had a new home waiting for me in Wellington. I had ... read more

Some gasp at the smell. "Rotten eggs," the say, spewing their words with such distain as if the acidity lingered on their very tongues. "Who let off a sulfur bomb?" I heard an American say, languishing on a park bench. I pictured him gasping for air on a school bus of unruly teens, suffocating in the stench as he tried to put down one of those unruly windows. This odoriferous city for me however sparks endless memories of my youth. It's watering the vegetable garden in the dead heat of a Tennessee summer while the humidity drips down my temples. I take the hose and douse it over my curly brown ponytail for a euphoric release. It's washing my parents cars in the driveway, Joy dish soap foaming over the sides of the bucket, and a ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Matamata November 13th 2014

Or Hobbiton. If you know nothing about New Zealand, then you at least know that the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Hobbit movies have been filmed here. In the small town of Matamata, the Shire was built into hillsides and preserved so that fans can live out their secret, hairy feet fantasies. But I must confess: I committed a horrible crime. In my travels I passed straight through the town of Matamata without strolling through the Shire, without entering a hobbit hole, and without stopping for a beef and ale pie at the Green Dragon Inn. Basically by opening this blog, you have just fallen for a little entertaining jape on my end. But, don't judge this LOTR fan too harshly. One of you will inevitably come visit me and force me to take you ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel Peninsula November 12th 2014

The drive from Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula was a transcendental one. The two-lane motorway rose and fell across farms more like a backcountry road rather than a highway. Never in my life had I experienced so many different shades of a single color in one landscape. I weaved through absinthe green farmlands speckled with grazing sheep. Unlike the endless mudbath pastures found in the States, cattle meandered through violently pigment fields of jade. Vineyards sprung from the ground, their early granny smith apple green vines weaving in perfect rows over ridges. Weeping willows caressed the fence lines with wisping tentacles and forests of pines crept into the fields only to disappear around the next ridge. Hillsides rippled into the horizon each taking on their own defining shade, from the light green of asparagus to the ... read more

My feet coiled in the sun-slathered, ebony sand of Karekare Beach (pronounced carrie-carrie). Sand in general is torturous after a day of resting under the sun, but black sand - it is like walking on coals. I tried to play it off for the first few steps and then gracelessly did the hot sand dance the last four feet until my toes met the moist shoreline. I calmly recovered as I watched the waves break 50 feet out and then slide into the glittering shore before me. I feel most connected to the world when my feet are being consumed by the oncoming waves of the sea. It's as though my body subconsciously knows that the water in this place is connected to all of the other seas and oceans my feet have stepped in. The ... read more

It seems only fitting that I start this blog with a glass of Paradisos Sève in my hand. A smooth, crisp, white wine that flowers over the tastebuds of this usually red wine drinker’s tongue. WWOOFing or World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms Today marks a week of my working on the Paradisos del Sol Vineyard as a WWOOFer in Zillah, Washington. WWOOFing is a work exchange program that provides individuals with the opportunity to learn about and take part in organic farming across the globe. In exchange for anywhere between 20-35 hours a week of work, the host provides room and board. Opportunities range from working on vineyards, dairies, orchards, ranches, and homesteads, along with other options. Reconnecting with Roomie Jhene, my roommate from Alaska and future New Zealand travel companion, worked at Paradisos del ... read more

As soon as I stepped foot out the gate I was dodging a frenzy of people. Massage tables scattered the walkways and hives of slot machines were huddled inconveniently in the center of the walkways. Maneuvering my carry-on luggage through the excitement, I bypassed baggage claim and quickly found myself on the curb of ground transportation. The heat sank into the black of my sleeve covered arms as my eyes adjusted to the light. I took a deep breath. I exhaled thick exhaust while the smell of stale crackers lingered oddly in the air. I rolled my small bag over to the shuttle booth and asked the lady how to get to Bally's Las Vegas. My bucket list grows almost daily. I want to live in New Zealand and work with the Human Rights Commission for ... read more

Cades Cove An hour east of Knoxville, Tennessee on the quiet side of the Smoky Mountains, an 11 mile, one lane, one-way loop circles the valley of Cades Cove. All from the comfort of your vehicle, you can watch the valley spread out like an all you can eat buffet steaming across the hood of your car. You can absorb the tranquillity of the passing pine and oak trees with no worry of blisters or mosquito bites, your rear end cupped gently by the soft, plush, leather seats of the vehicle. The most beautiful part about experiencing nature in this way is that you can defy it. In the 90 degree heat accompanied by the 90% humidity in the dead of summer, you can bask in the cool whispering of the AC as it gently kisses ... read more
