It´s twenty past five in the UK on the 10 January, and twenty past 11 on the 9 January in Costa Rica! Made it via two flights, a long trek through Newark Airport. Also, met Peter who is on the 3 month programme so we shared a taxi to the hostel. Very excited to be here. Will check out San Jose once I have had some sleep. take care all, Sx... read more

Today marks 14 sleeps until I fly to San Jose! I am currently watching Hook with the Whitneys and wondering if I will meet any pirates on my travels! My family gave me a brilliant rucksack for my trip and I can't wait to fill it with all the bits I have been storing up over the last few weeks for my trip - including a waterproof notebook, binoculars and of course my reptile and amphibians book. Getting very excited now. Need to learn some useful Spanish phrases so any ideas please let me know. take care all, adios, Sharon... read more

It's been a long while since my last travels and an even longer time since I shared my adventures on this site. Today however I thought I would 'kick-off' my count down to my next adventure - Costa Rica! Official start date of my internship with GVI (www.gvi.co.uk/programs/conservation-internship-costa-rica if you'd like more details) is 11 January 2014 (in bold and underlined no less) so I have 12 weeks of work and 98 sleeps to go...not that I am counting. For those that don't know I am hoping to gain experience in the rainforests of Costa Rica so I can start a conservation-based career. The plan is to work and live alongside their research team who will hopefully train me up on a range of skills which will include data processing, biological surveys, camera trapping, species identification ... read more

With literally just days until I am back in the UK I wanted to post some pictures from my wonderful time in the Galapagos, if only to give you a flavour of where I have been for the last 2 weeks! In any event, I will tell you the TRUE story of Lonesome George, in case you do not know it.... Once upon a time in the Galapagos, on the Island (of which there are many here and I only peeked at 7) called Pinta lived over 100,000 giant tortoises. They pretty much had the place to themselves until over the course of the 1800s and early 1900s sailors, whalers, and inhabitants of the islands liked the tasty meat and pretty much ate the tortoises to near extinction, the final nail in the coffin was when ... read more

Still in Peru at this stage (our final stop in fact before crossing the border to Ecuador). We had intended to spend a few days here enjoying the sunshine and beach and possibly even some surfing but Mancora hostels were fully booked and we struggled to find a room! In any event we did get to stay a couple of days and enjoyed lazying in hammocks, eating ice cream and paddling in the ocean :) More text in next weeks.... read more

...where Brim finally did some dancing! :) Okay, because I am about 4 weeks behind in sending you my travel updates I have decided to try and cut some corners and send some photos. I will try and update the text over the next weeks, if I am not too busy having too much of a good time in the Galapagos if not, I will just bore you with the stories when I get back. In any event, as a very quick summary we stayed a couple of nights in Trujillo. We did a day tour where we visited ruins from old (pre inca) civilisations and met some local Peruvian guys who swept us off our feet and danced :)... read more

When Brim said she wanted to go sandboarding in Peru I have to admit it was not top on my agenda but as I had dragged her to Tango and Whales I could not really argue...and in fact, it was such brilliant fun I would probably do it again :) Please check out Andrea´s travelblog for me (with great panache) coming down a sand dune! :) More text in a couple of weeks.... read more

the unofficial Barton and Brimelow Inca trek to Machu Picchu courtesy of the Danish family in Puno and Dave and Paul from the Southern Comfort hostel in Cusco! There are mainly two ways to get to Machu Picchu. 1. The train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes and then a walk up or a bus up to the entrance. The other way, a 4 day trek - and it is a real trek (not even close to an infamous Barton family stroll) in heat and altitude involving carrying your belongings with you and camping! Needless to say I didn't jump at the chance of walking four days and camping but likewise we didn't like the idea of just jumping on the (not very cheap) tourist train either. However, whilst in Puno the Danish family who were in ... read more
