We had our first rain storm here in Atenas since I moved here from San Pedro/San Jose. It just lasted for 20 minutes or so but it was refreshing. I took a few photos that I'll post soon. The nice thing is that it was still warm outside;) Of course in their rainy season from May through November they get rain almost everyday. But depending on what part of the country your in it might be mostly just in the mid afternoon on. Their rainiest month tends to be September I think. I did a load of wash today...mostly towels and timed it just right with bringing them in off the clothesline just before it started raining. After the rains stopped I took my daily walk into town with the mission of locating a restaurant a ... read more

Today was the day I finally made it up to see my friend Barb's place in Vista Atenas. It's a development high in a nearby hill with to-die-for views! I'm hoping the photos I took do it justice. In addition to going there to see her casita and beautiful setting we had wanted to work on our plans for our day trip this Wednesday and next weeks longer trip. So after getting the grand tour and taking several photos we got to work on trip planning with some help from her neighbor, Claude from Quebec. There is quite a large population of Canadians in Costa Rica. It was fun to practice a bit of French with Claude in the midst of so much Spanish. Claude agreed to go with us, he has a car;) to Grecia ... read more

To pick up where I left off in my last blog, we left San Isidro on Friday morning to head to the beach, Manuel Antonio & Quepos. Eladio had offered more than once to take us there by taxi as he said the bust was not comfortable. The way he put it was that it had many working people that would have a bad odor. He also want to give of a tour or the areas. To save costs we opted to take the bus. So we left Hotel Diamente rather early that morning to catch the bus. It was a decent bus and the ride went fine. But it did end up getting very very full. At each stop more and more people joined us so I did take some photos of that. Barb & ... read more

Back from my first trip to discover more about Costa Rica! Barb & I had a nice trip. We saw and did most of what we wanted to. To start us out on this four-day adventure we left Atenas on Wednesday February 2 in the morning by public bus, no chickens present, to head to San Jose. The route included going through Alajuela, where one of the two international airports is in CR, and the one I came into nearly one month ago. Once we made it to the Coca Cola Bus Station in San Jose we got a taxi to go to eh other side of the city to the Musoc Bus Station to head south to San Isidro. I took a few photos through the bus windows that I will post. They aren't the ... read more

Today, the first day of February, was a day to get ready for our (Barb & I) bus trip down to San Isidro and eventually to the Pacific Coast. We'll be gone 3-5 days. I've decided not to take my computer so I'm not stuck with carrying it in my backpack for hikes, walking around town or at the beach. So no blogs until we return. I may have brief access to email through Barb's iPod Touch and/or through internet cafes. I got nearly done with packing this morning then Barb and I went to the Balcon Cafe for lunch. A popular place for Gringos to eat. Great food at about the price you'd pay in the states. We then walked to the bank, pharmacy, macrobiotica (health food store) and a few clothing stores as I'm ... read more

Last day of January 2011..... So are you noticing the days getting longer there in Oregon, Washington and Maryland yet? It seems to me it's noticeable by the end of January. Early this morning, about 6:15, I went outside and recorded a brief audio/video of the morning bird sounds that I will post momentarily. Otherwise I haven't been out of the apartment yet today but plan to go for a walk in an hour or so. I've been working at planning our next trip for the middle of February to Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal and Monte Verde. But first about our trip planned for this week. We're taking the bus from Atenas down to San Jose, not my favorite place, then at a different bus stop catch a bus to San Isidro de General. It's a ... read more

Happy Sunday to everyone! Yep I moved again but just to the apartment right next door. It has 2 twin beds instead of one double which is better if my friend comes to visit for a couple days. Also this apartment has more light, a larger fridge and a toaster. Although since I'm on a gluten-free diet I'm not eating much bread as I haven't found any gluten-free bread yet. But no worries since I'm finding plenty to eat between the fresh fruits, veggies, beans, corn tortillas, yogurt & cheese and occasional meat I'm doing well! I'll be downloading photos of my new apartment plus a 2+ minute video taken right outside the apartment that I took in order to get the audio of the neighbor's bird talking in Spanish. You can certainly pick out "hola" ... read more

Yesterday on behalf of my mom's 89th birthday I took a day off from blogging on my travel blog! Well actually I just got wrapped up in other stuff. I went to the weekly farmer's market/feria and bought quite a bit again! But I had already eaten most all of what I bought the Friday before. Later in the day I walked to the grocery store to buy some items not available in the feria and picked out a double banana! I took a photo of it since I had never seen one before. It's two bananas side-by-side under the same peeling. In the early afternoon I tried to video chat with my sister & mom, for her birthday. Unfortunately the connection on my end was not very good so their faces were heavily pixled and ... read more

You can tell by the title of this blog that it wasn't an easy carefree day but I wouldn't call it a bad day either. I had intended to go to Pilates class again but after reading an email from Barb that she wasn't going and having a series of ocular migraines I talked myself out of it. These migraines are relatively minor compared to regular migraines but they do affect vision and here you need to be able to see where you're walking since most sidewalks are in poor condition. Later in the morning I once again walked to one of the banks to see about getting cash in Colones. I may have forgotten to mention this ongoing dilemma in a previous blog but ever since I came to Atenas I've had a lot of ... read more

I started the day by walking to the grocery store around 7:15 to buy a few groceries, taking advantage of one of two of their discount days. I hurried back home, put groceries away and then headed to the park to meet Barb to walk to the house of the Tica, Vickie, I met on Monday that invited me to go to see their nearby rancho/farm. After a brief conversation with my neighbor, Enrique, originally from Italy but more recently form California, about the most important sights to see in CR I walked as fast as I could since I was already a few minutes late to meet Barb. She was also a bit late so we immediately headed in the direction of Vickie's home. You might remember that I expressed some fleeting thoughts as to ... read more
