Kaylene has been talking about wanting to go to school in Colorado for years --- even though we've never been there. Soooo, Fall Break spelled Rocky Mountain Road Trip for us. We checked out campuses in Colorado Springs, Boulder and Fort Collins. If I were the 20-something, it'd sooooo be Boulder, but Kaylene is more level-headed and mature than I am, so she settled on CSU in Fort Collins --- a lovely town, and a beautiful campus. For some reason I did not take any pictures while we were there --- perhaps my way of avoiding the reality of my daughter flying so far away from my nest. BUT, the highlight of the trip for me wasn't the college search. It was every and any where we drove. Oh MY God. I feel like we should ... read more

Okay, so I'm writing this in our suite while all of my friends are out whooping it up for our last night here. Whoever thought that an all-you-can-eat buffet was a good idea must have had a stomach of steel. I realize I didn't have to eat ALL those desserts, the sushi, the Turkish sausage, the potato/cheese thingies, and God knows what else --- nor did I have to go back for seconds --- but damn they were yummy, and damn my stomach is so mad at me right now. After the All You Can Eat fiasco (halfway through I remembered to breathe --- why do we eat faster at buffets?), we strolled (practically rolled) around the strip, visiting the M&M store (way, way overpriced) and then the Coca Cola store (way over priced BUT more ... read more

7/25/10 The only reason I know today’s date is because we’re leaving 1 a.m. tomorrow. This time last month was a whole other lifetime ago. I cannot believe how much I’ve experienced in such a short period of time. If my checking account allows I will one day come back here. I’m serious about wanting to live and work here for a year (or more). Sure, Ghana could use the resources I have access to, but, more selfishly, I could use the lessons Ghana still has to teach me. I’m officially hungry for more. I am also a Western soul who misses home. Besides my family, friends and pets (Good God Badger is going to drop dead of a happy heart attack when he sees me, or so I’ve been told), these are the things I ... read more

Concrete canals and gutters criss cross all over Ghana. Yesterday, I looked upstream while walking over the wood planks that served as a canal bridge. An evergreen-colored wave carrying trash and waste from the living sloppily made its way to my bridge; I quickly made my way over it, holding my breath as long as I could. I shouldn’t have bothered. I could taste the putrid odor way past the sludge because what sloshes around in the canal works its way into the gutters that line every street. Thankfully, there is also a lot of trash that is burned --- you smell it at dusk when the mosquitoes come out. The people of Ghana are very clean --- their streets and alleyways not so much. I’m sharing this because while there is so much beauty and ... read more

We just finished breakfast. Delores gave me her camera to upload pics, and since she has soooo many good ones I'm sharing with you --- plus the Internet is working! We had an amazing interview yesterday, which I will write about later. I want to do that story justice and take my time with it. Today, we'll probably do a last run in the market, organize things, and get our thoughts together for the work we have to produce. Okay, keep your fingers crossed, if all goes well I'll be able to post the pics.... read more

July ? When you stare at bamboo and palm bushes long enough you see the weave of baskets and fabric, and you finally realize where some of those amazing patterns came from. Ghanaians work hard but they also do a lot of sitting. I think they see more of life’s intricate designs than we do. I believe it’s their nature to observe, inhale and share when the time is right. I haven’t been here long enough to not get frustrated by their just-right time way of living, but when it shows up in their art and their language I understand it just a little bit. We need to learn to sit, stare and listen more. That said they also live very much in the now. We know their traditional dances and music, which is still very ... read more

July Something --- I've totally lost track of time. Today, is our official day off, and I spent it on the beach. We got up early so that we could walk to another fishing village on the other side of where we are. We're somewhere near Takordi at a resort (translation: hotel with nicer-looking rooms and an expensive menu) on Bussua beach. It is an amazingly romantic place --- the kind of tropical beach you dream of going to. There are three other resorts nearby and a fishing village, which includes a church and school. At 4 a.m. you hear the villagers singing their psalms --- it's disturbing at first because who does that just about every morning at that time, um isn't God still sleeping? But, it is also a beautiful sound in tune with ... read more

There's so much more to write, but I don't have a lot of time. We're getting ready to eat breakfast and go for a long walk on the beach. We're told that there's another beach and fishing village at the other side. We had an awesome day yesterday, but I'll tell you all about it when I get the chance. First I must post those pics I promised. And, yes, there will be more pics to come.... read more

July 16, 2010 Koo Nimo is jamming in the background. Koo who you say? Koo Nimo the cool music teacher who (last week) gave us the best lecture because it was mostly music and dancing. No. I didn’t kidnap him and force him to play in my room. I bought the CD, which interestingly enough was made in Germany. Today we had a blast at Kukum. You walk up a bunch of stairs to a series of rope bridges --- each one a little different than the other. I felt like a chimpanzee swinging above the trees, even the way I reached from rope to rope was sooooo ape. Afterward, some of us took the nature trail option while the rest went to drink beer and eat lunch. It rained the entire time, which for me ... read more

July 15, 2010: Cape Coast Day One: First off let me say I am typing this from our balcony, which overlooks an infinity of palm trees on a beach as infinite. You can also hear the children playing and laughing at the nearby school. Right below us is a lot of weathered concrete, some chickens and goats, and some tiny box homes with rusted tin roofs. The air is thick with salt, cooking smoke and a hint of rain --- always a hint; we have yet to experience a full-fledged down pour. Vineta, Rosie, Paul, Ted and I went swimming in the surf, although I’d call it more of Mother Nature’s version of a bitch slapping. The waves and undertow threw us around like rag dolls, but we loved every minute of it. Nothing says beach ... read more
