With the first year of my working holiday in the UK coming to an end (and along with it the twelve-month period during which I had to enter Canada to obtain my two-year working holiday visa for that country) I had come up with the idea of flying to Toronto, getting my Canadian visa, and then embarking on a two-week holiday taking in three of the biggest and most famous cities in North America - Toronto, Chicago and New York - before heading back to the UK to set about finding a job in Scotland.
Having come to the realization, however, that spending the summer in Scotland would effectively mean missing out on summer altogether, I had belatedly (and perhaps foolishly - given the state of my finances) added an eleven-day sojourn to the Mediterranean coast of Turkey immediately after my North American trip - a decision that had been inspired by a picture of a particularly beautiful Turkish beach that I had seen in a coffee table book belonging to my landlords in York.
So after having spent no less than six months travelling around Europe over the previous three summers - but without ever having visited any other parts of the world - I suddenly found myself setting out on a four-week trip that would take me from the bright lights of North America's biggest cities, to a land I knew very little about in a seemingly forgotten corner of Asia...
