South America » Chile January 4th 2016

Geo: -35.6751, -71.543Today I start my 4th week of travelling alone across South America. Can you believe that? I can't.... I'd like to share a few of my thoughts with you as a "interim result" of my trip.I was a bit afraid to do this travel all alone in the beginning, but now I can say that so far it's the best thing I've ever done in my life. I love to travel and spent time with my friends, please don't get me wrong, but it's quite a different experience. When I travel with someone, I do it mostly to spent some time with this person and to have a common experience / adventure making our friendship stronger and more precious. Now that I travel alone though, I travel to find out more about myself, to ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza January 1st 2016

Geo: -38.4161, -63.6167On 1st of January 2016, Alex and I left very early Valparaiso (8 AM) to get to Santiago where he went off sightseeing and in the evening catching a plane to Montreal and me I took a bus to Mendoza. Now, when I started planning my trip, there was no mention of Mendoza, so why did I go there? Because (or better thanks to) Adrián. We met during the JCI World Congres in Kanazawa (Japan) in November 2015 and he immediately invited me to visit him in Mendoza when I told him about my tour. Him seeming like a nice person and me always taking the offer to see another place, I decided to go there for 3 days. I thought, 3 days are absolutely enough to visit a city, but my visit turned ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Valparaíso December 30th 2015

Geo: -35.6751, -71.543On wednesday 30th of december, Alex and I arrived at 7 PM with our nightbus to Valparaiso. We first wanted to drop off our staff at the hostel so we took a taxi there. Outside of the Licanantay hostel were already waiting Maria and (?) who live at the moment in La Paz in Bolivia (Maria is originally from Nicaragua but grew up in Canada and X is from Spai ) and a bit later we were joined by Oscar from Wajaki in Ecuador. The hostel wasn't open yet and nobody inside seemed to be awake (WTF?!) so Oscar was playing his guitar and trying to wake them. Even though we had to wait more than 1h outside, it was fun and we got to know each other. After freshing up, Maria, Oscar, Alex and ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » La Serena December 28th 2015

Geo: -35.6751, -71.54314 hours later, we finally arrived at La Serena and Alex went directly to our hostel while I went to Vicuña to finally get back my towel and bikini. We spent the afternoon relaxing and drinking beer on the roof terrace with some people that we knew from our hostel in San Pedro de Atakam and in the evening we went for a walk in the city center, bought some presents (Alex at least) and we cooked dinner in our hostel. The next day (29.12), our tour to the Humboldt Pinguïn Reserve started at 8:30 AM and our guide was actually early for a change ; can you imagine this? Really strange for Chile! ;-)Hannah from Texas came with us, 2 people from England and 3 from Germany. Our guide was really good - he ... read more

South America » Chile December 24th 2015

Geo: -35.6751, -71.543After returning from Bolivia I was really tired because the last 2 days we had to get up at 4:30 AM and the days were quite long. I bought tickets for a few tours of Cruz Andina that I wanted to do with my friend Alex who would be arriving the next day and I had a delicious lunch (vegetarian risotto). I texted the Cimas del Sol Hostel if they could come pick me up at the bus terminal at 2 PM but when I arrived 1 hour later, they were like : "You are late, we expected you you at 2!" and I was "But it is 2!" until I realized that I had forgotten to change my clock from Bolivian to Chilean time.... Congratulations Bianca, very smart... ! ^^ It was Christmas ... read more

South America » Bolivia December 21st 2015

Geo: -16.2902, -63.5887As recommanded by my new friend Sarah, whom I met in Santiago, once arrived in San Pedro de Atakama, I looked for the travel agency "Cruz Andina" to book a 4-day-trip to Bolivia. Lionel, who was going to be our guide, gave me all necessary infos and made me a very good price (125.000 $ CLP). Afterwards I returned to the hostel I had found just before and where I would camp that night. I spent the afternoon discovering the center of San Pedro de Atakama with it's nice artisanal markets and relaxing at the pool of my hostel. I must say the first night in my new tent was terrible : it was really really cold and without any mattress the floor was soo hard. Well, I survived but I should buy somewhere ... read more

Geo: -35.6751, -71.543Second stop on my tour : Vicuña. Well, I didn't know that this was going to be my 2d stop when I left Santiago... I new that I wanted to spent 3 days in Chico Norte so I took a bus to La Serena, but it was only during that 6h bus-trip that I decided that I would go to Valle Elki and see La Serena and the Humboldt Pinguin Parc rather on my way back from San Pedro de Atakama to Valparaiso.First a word about the bus-trip : it was really long, the aircondition was way too strong and cold and the toilets were disgusting. But well, I survived. ;-) So 10 minutes after arriving in La Serena I took the next bus to Vicuña (reading Lonely Planet I figured that was the ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago December 13th 2015

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Now after a few days in South America, I finally start writing about this amazing experience. When I arrived at Santiago's airport, of course I had no clue where to go and how to get to my hostel. There was no tourist-info to be found : great! :S But "fortunately" I met his helpful guy from the non existing tourist-info who showed me where to find an ATM and where to take the mini-bus to get to my hostel. Well, in the end this cost me 30.000$ (CLP) where the regular bus would have cost only 1.500$ (CLP).... The guy from the non existing tourist agency wanted a tip - of course.... But WTH... Couldn't let this wasted money kill my good mood! :-)The Che Lagarto Hostel turned out to be great. It's located close ... read more
