After a bit of Lunch I set back off to Aldi’s to pick up a few more supplies, followed by a bit of a walk around the woods. By the time I returned, the site was full, and a couple of Brits had arrived. The first were Francis and Kim, who were first timers to the Paris Roubaix but had followed the TDF for years in their motorhome. The others were Miles and his wife, he was trying his hardest not to turn his week here into a cycling holiday, as his wife was not as passionate about cycling, but was warming to the idea of motor homing. The next day I woke fairly early with the intention of riding to Roubaix to check out the velodrome, the finale of the race. But with no way ... read more

So a nice early rise Thursday morning as the ferry was for 6:40am and I needed to fuel up before hand. Now the one draw back to my little van, (or “Bob” as my nephew has named him), is climbing hills. I can start at 60, but I’ll be lucky if I’m still doing 40 at the top and not in third gear. So I was a bit apprehensive of taking the main A20 to reach Dover, but as it was, there was virtually no traffic and a 40mph limit, which meant I actually had to slow down from time to time. Once at the port I prepared to present my passport to the relevant authorities, except they were all still asleep and not in their booths, the english nor the French. The only guy to ... read more

So the Drive down to M'hmid was short, but an ok road with a small mountain pass and the edge of the desert to look at. We arrived at the campsite way to early, so the guy showed us around and then showed us one of the air conditioned rooms, so we choose one instead of camping. Lunch was really nice and after the owner discussed what extras we were interested in doing. It was at this point he told us the dunes were still another 40km's away, so I wouldn't get to cycle them with the fat bike! The next day, we realised that the sand was just behind the place, all of a mile down the road, and that the dunes he claimed were 40 km away were the big dunes that you have ... read more

Well after my last blog, I spent the next 3 days couped up in a tent/house thing in Marrakesh, feeling the worst I’ve ever felt. The parents managed to make a small trip to the shops on one day, and actually got to go into Marrakesh for the day on another, while I stayed in watching films and waiting for Facebook to load, and load ,and load( the place had WiFi, but our tent house was only just in its zone) Being the first time of having food poisoning to that degree, I didn’t know what to expect, or how long I was going to have to put up with it for. It got so bad that, combined with the awful weather, I just wanted to go home. Which just isn’t right as this is an ... read more

The parents did eventually make it in to the town of Chefchouen, as the rain had lightened in the afternoon. They planned to buy water, eggs and bread. They bought a pasta strainer and a couple of other bits, but they forgot to pick up the bread and water. The next morning started off with a shower (surprise surprise), but had stopped after breakfast so we packed up, and headed for our next destination, the Volubis ruins near Meknes. On the way we stopped at a cafe and it had the film White house down playing on the tv. This was quite a distraction as we found ourselves just sitting there watching it. For Lunch we stopped in another small town and had an egg and salad sandwich which was really good, then just as we were ... read more

Day one started ok, we missed the 7:30 ferry which put us an hour behind, and I also went to the cinema the night before (Captain America, Civil war - really good film) so only had 5 hours of sleep, this meant i was starting to get very tired near the end of the day. Due to French non toll roads being though little villages and slow roads, when we reached a campsite we had only done 350 miles, and to top it off the campsite was shut! Another we passed was also shut, but luckily the third one was open. It was a well kept site and we were the only people on it. It was a municipal site with a swimming pool and sports centre next door, which tonight was host to a party ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais » Calais April 22nd 2016

Day 1- So for a first day it was eventful. The weather wasn't too bad at home, with just heavy rain. But by the time we cycled over the hill and down onto the marsh, the winds had really picked up. This made it a slow grind, until my rear tyre blew out! Just outside of Lydd, and only 10 miles in. I had all the kit for most repairs, but I'd never experienced an exploding tyre so had nothing to fix it. So a quick call for help to Richard, and a new tyre and tube were delivered. While Rich was sorting the tyre from Activ, I replaced the tube and gingerly pumped it unto 30 psi, which was just enough for we to walk the bike to Lydd, but I wasn't going to chance ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » New Forest July 25th 2015

I suppose I had better confess... though my journey started in the New forest I didn't actually cycle from there. A couple of days earlier the family had discussed going to Drusillas animal park, at Alfriston. I decided that I wanted to do this too, so rather than set off on the Thursday, we bundled all my stuff in to the truck, ready for Friday. Again to be honest, this did mean I missed out all the problem points of Southampton and Chichester, though like everything, once you know about it, its not such a big problem, so I probably would have enjoy the cycle back through these places. Another change of plan was a lunch meet, midday Friday, with Louis in Shoreham, as Route 2 goes right passed his flat in shoreham-by-sea. On the first ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » New Forest July 25th 2015

I bought a Raleigh Royal, which is a steel touring bike with 700c wheels, and cycled to the New Forest and back, following the national cycle route 2. The cycle route actually starts in Dover, so I joined it as it cuts across the Marsh, just down the road from Aldington. The route starts on tarmac, but there are quite a few places where the tarmac has worn away or never had any in the first place. Day one would take me through Lydd, Camber and Rye to get to Winchelsea, mostly following the coastline, Until Pevansey, where it would head in land to get to Alfriston. Most of this route was flat, but at Winchelsea there’s an almighty hill to get over to Hastings. I tried my best, but knowing I had another two days ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais » Calais April 26th 2014

Well the last four days have been unbelievable nightmare. As you know Dads had an over heating issue all holiday, but it was especially bad in Europe due to the terrain and the high mileage. Well this time we allotted over 4 days to get home, which for the first 5 minutes worked well. We got up and out by 8am with the intention ofcathcing the 10am ferry in to Spain. But once we reached the port we were told the area for larger vehicles was full, though I think this could have been a bit of a miss communication as I believe they thought we had campers or caravans. But they told us that we could catch the ferry from Cueta, and being only 20 miles or so further round the coast we took that ... read more
