South America » Colombia » San Agustin January 13th 2010

I have to tell you about my bus trip to San Agustin. It is a 5-8 hours bus trip from the nearest city linked to the Panamerican highway, Popayan, and the road is in really bad shape (not European bad, but South America bad...). So you end up sitting in a small, uncomfortable bus, bumping up and down for 5-8 hours... I had breakfast in a restaurant at the bus station, while waiting for the bus. When it was about to leave, I did not struggle my way in front of the line to drop off my bag like the Colombians, but waited til last... Bad choice, when I came in to the bus, there was no seat left. I was of course not happy about this, because I was among the first people to buy ... read more

After two days in Ipiales, the coldest city in Colombia (thank God there was hot water at the hotel) I took a short sidetrip to Tulcán in Ecuador to renew my VISA. I got 90 days!!! Yes indeed, blue eyes give an advantage sometimes :o) Then Jenny, Paola and me went to las Lajas, a beautiful neogothic church situated in the valley between two sonderful mountains. Apaprently Virgin Mary is said to once have appeared on the cliff where the church is now built. Then I took the bus on my own to the capital of the Narino department: Pasto. Pasto is not spectacular in itself, it is just another South American city in the mountain where it is cold outisde the houses and inside the houses, but you yet have to open the windows, otherwise ... read more

South America » Colombia » Ipiales January 6th 2010

was a hilarious experience. It was basically two days of being dirty because as soon as you got out on the street, someone would come and paint your face (or sometimes by accident your clothes too...) with color, spray foam on you, or throw flour at you, especially if you looked kind of clean. The Carnaval was held over January 5 and 6 and represent the older days of Colombia when slaves were allowed to celebrate on January 5 and their masters painted their faces in black to show approval of the festivities. The following day, the 6th is the white day. However, as you can imagine, the colors were not respected and during the two days of celebrating, watching concerts and parades, I felt like a cameleont, going from black, to green, to orange, to ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cali January 4th 2010

On the 31st it was time for another adventure in Duo Nucita. We took the flight from Cartagena to Cali in the afternoon and arrived, after being travelling in the cockpit, wow! to Cali at night. The plan was to make a joke with Marcela's family and tell them that she couldn't come because of work. This is a big tragedy in Colombian families because they are very close and December 31st is always celebrated with your family. Then she would pop up at midnight as a surprise. The whole thing almost did not work when someone walked out of the plane cabin with my bag!!! I had to rush down and look everywhere, only not to find it, and then finally the pilot helped me to a security guard who had it. Puh! Apparently the ... read more

South America December 21st 2009

Since the university semester ended last week, I decided to go travel somewhere, maybe to find some Christmas spirit... Even though the whole university is decorated with Christmas lights, Senora Mariela with whom I live play X-mas songs very loudly all day long and I went to Bazurto, the local market, to buy gifts for poor children, I just don't seem to be able to find any Christmas spirit in 30 degrees heat, warm water and among palm trees... So I decided to take the bus to Parque Tayrona, a National Park, that many of my Colombian friends have recommended. I finally actually ended up in Taganga, a beautiful small fishing village about 15 minutes from Santa Marta. It is tiny tiny tiny, has only a main street along the water and five streets up the ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama November 29th 2009

Panama is great… Just came back from two wonderful weeks with Natalie in Panama. Every travel with her is great and I so much appreciated seeing her again (it has been since 2003!) I did have some hard times/adventures before I got here… Shortly, the sailing boat that I was going to take to Panama via San Blas, did not leave, and I found out by accident one day before… This was very bad for three reasons: - My VISA expired on Saturday, the day when the boat was supposed to leave - Nat already booked her trip and was supposed to arrive to the City Thursday (the same day I was supposed to arrive with the boat) - The day I found out was a regional holiday, so no banks or ticket offices were open. ... read more

Hmm... Crazy crazy crazy. I was a little bit disappointed Wednesday because after the week-end there was nothing going on in town, no festivities (is this what Colombians call a party?!?!). And I was prepared for the biggest week of fiestas ever, before I leave the country! Thursday however started The Big Thing. There were so called Bandos that passed around town. Like big trucks where the beauty queens stand and wave to the people. And, other trucks (more fun and with prettier people) that advertised different alcohols. But, the interesting thing was not the Bandos, but what happened around it! Actually it started earlier in the week with kids (and grown-ups!) going around painted in black or blue, asking you for change or else they will smear you into the same color as them (or ... read more

This week-end was a week-end of joy! My headache was (almost) completely gone and I was feeling better, so good that I could go out in the sun without the light hurting my head and eyes anymore. So, after the relaxing day in Turbaco, my and Mi Hermana Marcela and some friends of her went to see the queens in the old town of Cartagena. Colombia is very focused on beauty (apparently cosmetical surgery is very cheap and very good here - but I do not think I will stay around to find out... ;o) and people talk about the beauty queens like if they were saints and there is a whole week here now where they do different presentations. So, to see these wonderful creatures, we went into town to have a drink and watch. ... read more
