It’s my second day in Delhi now. Here is what it’s like to breathe here: the air has a milky, opaque consistency, and what your nostrils reluctantly suck in smells and tastes like sandy tepid bacon. Most of the fellow travelers begin coughing up brown stuff after a few days, and I can’t help but wonder what the rates of lung cancer are in the city. It’s pretty cold (4C-15C) and there is no indoor heating. Most travelers are wearing everything they own, which makes a colorful runway. I sleep fully dressed, under 2 blankets, and still shiver.
