Day 52 to Ulan Ude Early start and got a mini bus all the way to Irkutsk train station, some 70kms. Unfortunately as suspected there were no tickets for the only train that day to Ulan Ude. Found a mini bus going there for almost the same price so decided to risk it. Was a pretty bad 7 hours or so on a very bumpy and windy road but eventually we arrived in Ulan Ude around 5pm and found somewhere to stay. Ate some dinner at a good local restaurant but no english whatsoever from the menus to the staff! This was pretty much the case for everywhere in Ulan Ude. Not much to write here, the only thing of note in the City is it houses the largest Lenin head in the world and if ... read more

Day 50 First impressions of Irkutsk were not great and was following a similar pattern to other Russian cities. Around the station area was chaotic and madness with the people, driving and buses etc. Eventually we found a tram to get us to the bus station as decided to leave immediately for Lake Baikal which is the major attraction in the area. It is some 600Kms long and 80kms wide (almost the size of Germany) and some 1600 metres deep in parts, so easily the biggest freshwater lake in the world! It supplies 20% of the words water and when we first saw the lake it was so foggy it actually looks like a sea as you can not see the other side. Pretty impressive and it is a big part of Tourism for this part ... read more

Day 47 Ok so we just ticked over 2800Kms this morning from moscow and now Moscow time +3, getting there but gosh what a night. At around 1am I think we had 2 women and baby of about 18 months join us. What the heck, how unlucky could we possibly be? Baby was crying away but I guess at that age you get a free ticket!? For most of the next day I was camped out in the corridor as the baby was roaming naked in our cabin, being fed, changed or sleeping. Lovely few hours that was and you can not believe how happy we were when they got off in Novosibirsk around 5pm. I was even ready to help them get off with their bags. Anyway after taking a break off the train here ... read more

Day 42 Today we arrived to a cold, rainy and dreary looking Moscow. Temparture had plummeted and we arrived in rush hour for the metro. My night on the train was not a particulary good one, we shared with 2 older russians, one who smoked non stop and other was a big snorer! The train itself was a bit shabby, carridges were ok though with matresses and bedding supplied. Girls listen, the bathrooms on these trains are not good though! Will post pictures of these trains in the next blog hopefully. After risking the metro, people running everywhere it reminded us a lot of london also people not so helpful here. We then walked in the pouring rain to our accommodation, called the Nova Hostel. From ourside it looked terriable, run down building with so signs ... read more

Day 38 - Saint Petersburg So on to Russia! This was just our 1st flight of our journey since we left the UK after the cancellation of our previous flight (that ash cloud!). Flight from Warsaw was just 2 hours and surprise surprise no problems this time and also Russian customs was a breeze. We had our fake itinery ready (Prepared by an agency for us, this is common practice). Basically when in Russia the authorities insist to know where you are ALL the time and you are also required to register your visa in every city where you are there longer than 3 days. This sounds daunting and stressful but when we contacted our russia friends we were to be staying with they told us not to bother! Anyway we had no problems and were ... read more

After leaving western Europe we spent the next 3 weeks visiting Family in Poland, my wife is Polish and our last chance for a while to see them all. While here we managed to squeeze in a few cities: - Koszalin Visited friends on the Baltic coast of Poland. Lovely in summer no doubt, freezing when we were there! - Gdansk, northernly port of Poland. We also visted Westerplatte which where the first shots were fired in WW2. A german warship was on a friendly visit to Gdansk and opened fire on the guardhouses on the banks. This was expected to be a swift victory for the Germans but the Poles held out for 7 days with very little in the way of men or supplies. When they did finally surrender the survivors were taken in ... read more

Today we were set to leave Budapest, we had thought about this for quite some time the day before as we were considering staying on as we enjoyed Buda so much. In the end even though it is significantly better value in Buda we both had never been to Bratislava. So Bratislava it was, just a 3 hour journey by train and we were there. First impressions were not great, the weather had changed for the worst (first time we really had cloudy weather) and the city looked a bit bleak and dull. Anyway I reminded Ania we were only at the train station and things surely would improve, and yes the train station was a dive as well! We immediately enquired about train tickets to Berlin as that was our next destination and was shocked ... read more

Weather finally changed a bit todayand chilly but we were off to Lucerne further North for one night. Stopped here simply to break up the trip as the following day we were heading to Budapest which was some 15 hours away by train. We arrived to Lucerne early afternoon and stayed at Lucerne Backpackers, this was pretty much the only budget option and was still pretty expensive. (78 Sw Francs) Nice place about 15 mins walk from the station, had a view of the lake from our room as well. Did all the usual touristy stuff in Lucerne - Chapel Bridge, Lion Monument, old town and City walls on the hill. Not much else to say here except definitely prefered Interlaken but there was nowhere else to stop except Zurich was was really expensive. Day 9 ... read more

And so onto Switzerland as was next on our list of countries! We took the bus between Lyon - Berne (almost half the cost of train) which was about 5.5 hours via Geneva. Good journey all up and arrived at Berne (Capital of Swiss) at lunchtime and decided instead of heading straight there to lock our bags and take a chance to check out Berne as from the bus it looked like a cool city. And have to say we were pleasantly surprised it is well worth a look. The old town was pretty but very small, just 3 streets really but enough and plenty of views as it is quite high up. City itself had a really good old feel to it and the buildings had a lot of character. Found everything there to be ... read more

After a quieter day yesterday we started early as planned to tackle 4 of the Riviera towns on our last day here. We started with the bus to Eze, this is a village perched up high on the cliffs of the Riviera and highly recommended. Unfortunately it is hugely popular with tourists, we did it late morning and hit a huge school group so would recommend earlier. After about 30 mins we arrived and there are some amazing views to be had. The village itself has many alleyways and hidden passages up and around the viewpoints. It can be difficult to find a quiet spot though but worth it. Once done instead of continuing with the bus we took the track that goes all the way down, bit of a hike and takes about 45 mins. ... read more
