Needing a coffee and toilet break, we stopped in the main street of Ross. Dean, having read about this town, felt there was more to it than a tired convenience store, a second hand goods place with way too many number plates on display and a public toilet that didn't rate higher than a 4/10 according to Dayna. A right turn at the junction and 100 metres up the hill and nestled amongst the cherry blossoms was a neatly presented historical precinct containing relics from the heyday of the gold rush. Eleanor took one step inside the old gaol and ran out, declaring it smelt like nan and pa's house. Yes, it did have that lingering odour of a pack a day chain smoker, so we made a hasty retreat but not before posing for the ... read more

Based on their ambivalence towards Fox Glacier, I wasn't confident about getting the girls to Franz Josef glacier. They did perk up once their devices were connected to the unlimited wifi at the motel and, with a good night's sleep under their belt, were fairly positive about the day's planned activities. I also thought a wee bit of bribery might also encourage them along - so it was frappes all round. Massive jugs of dairy delight (milk, ice cream and cream) flavoured with caramel or chocolate and they were putty in my hands. The sugar induced rush enabled them to run up Sentinel Rock like it was a challenge on The Biggest Loser. Taking on the glacier, they made the forty minutes ascent look easy. They did, however, observe that the glacier was even "more boring" ... read more

Dean jumped in the driver's seat, much to the girl's dismay, for the trip to Franz Josef. Winding our way up the mountains, past Coronet Peak (where the girls relived their skiing adventures once again) and with sensational views across to the Remarkables, we said goodbye to Queenstown and hello to glacier country. With no radio reception, the soundtrack accompanying our journey had the girls reaching for their headphones. The three CDs purchased at the Queenstown Salvos (from a VERY ORDINARY collection, mind you) were not worth the $6 we forked out. 'Rule Britannia - 40 years of great British music' could also be renamed as '11 bands you know playing 11 songs you don't'. That particular CD had the girls almost declaring a mutiny. The Tony Bennett & k. d. Lang 'wonderful world, sing-a-long of ... read more

After the previous day's calamities on the slopes, the activity of choice for our final full day was rather more sedate. A trip out to nearby Arrowtown for some historical action didn't really spark the interest of the girls but it was a lovely little village that would keep the rich tourists happy. The remnants of the Chinese settlement was rather forlorn looking but it provides an insight into the harsh conditions faced by the gold seekers. Our little blue cabin in the caravan park looks positively luxurious compared to the small huts hanging on the edge of the hill. Overcast skies but mild, we spent an hour or two traipsing around. In the afternoon, I took the girls ice skating. With a morbid fear of falling over, Eleanor took a while to look a little ... read more

Waking to a gorgeous sunny morning, New Zealand breakfast television obsessed by the All Blacks and a shower that Dean christened 'the tattoo remover', I was looking forward to exploring the town. We spent the day wandering around and the girls stalking some Brisbane you-tuber. It was a truly magnificent day weather-wise and the forecast looked good for the next few days. Queenstown offers lots of adventure activities and we decided that skiing would be the major one. However, we wanted the girls to try some other things too. Having experienced 'Escape Rooms' in KL and Melbourne, we thought we could try the one here. It certainly challenged us and if we hadn't been given lots of hints, we'd probably still be locked in the study with the revolver waiting for Colonel Mustard. Our second full ... read more

Despite yesterday's foray into the black and gold world of the 'Pak n Save', we were missing a few items (vegemite needs butter) so after a quick trip into a nearby convenience store (basically like buying stuff in a Bright 7/11), a leisurely breakfast followed. Once we did the requisite photo stops by the lake, the church and atop Mt John and then we were on our way to Queenstown via Mt Cook. Unlike driving anywhere near a hill in Australia, the roads weren't vomit-inducing. Fantastic scenery, driving conditions and a few local radio stations providing the soundtrack meant the journey was very easy. Overcast and a little chilly, we rugged up in preparation for our three hour hike along the Hooker Valley trail. We scoffed our hastily prepared lunch in front of the Visitor Centre, ... read more

Woke up on time but it took a while for the girls to get started. Departed the house at 6:15am for a 9:05am flight and hoped a) we'd packed everything; b) the Tulla was clear; c) queues for NZ were smaller than those for SE Asia on the first Saturday of the school holidays and; d) all of the above. Generally speaking, our wishes were granted. We only discovered we'd forgotten things once we needed them (Dayna's pjs and her black jeans, non-crusty toothpaste and tissues ...) and the automated check-in process was almost problem free. Yes, our first hurdle presented itself at the code sharing partner of Virgin - Air NZ. Dean, thinking it would be 'full service', didn't 'purchase' luggage. Condensing our bags, lightening our wallets, a little reshuffling and presto! We turned to ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Kuching July 20th 2014

A family kayaking adventure on our second full day in Kuching was a lovely way to take in some sites of the area. Although I was quite concerned about our lack of appropriate footwear, it appeared that Eleanor and I did wear what would eventually be the best type (thongs) and Dean's runners should have remained in Malaysia. The weather was reminiscent of a typical Melbourne day - sunny, cloudy, rainy, warm, sunny, cloudy, rainy etc - so we were fairly acclimatized and didn't raise an eyebrow when the first raindrops landed. It wasn't too taxing but some element of fitness was necessary. The water was very shallow, so we had a good giggle when we were given life vests as part of the safety briefing. Dean and Eleanor shared a kayak and one of the ... read more

Landing 19 minutes early in the 'City of Cats', we walked off the plane and straight into a Marrybrown ckicken franchise. Eleanor's stomach was rumbling and we thought it could be fixed by a quick pitstop. In hindsight, we should have kept going because there was nothing 'fast' about this food outlet. Neither is Eleanor's eating technique - she wouldn't be winning any prizes on the eating contest circuit. Even Dean, renowned for his patience, decided to go and collect our bags. And this led to another humiliating immigration adventure at Dean's expense. Eleanor and I walked through Gate B, whilst unbeknown to us, Dean had entered through Gate A and had spent the better part of ten or fifteen minutes in immigration limbo. An officer greeted us, enquiring as to whether I was missing my ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Kelantan » Kota Bharu July 14th 2014

The taxi ride from Kuala Basut in a 'vintage' Mercedes was pretty much like all the taxis we've taken on our travels in the past: Dean sits in the front passenger seat trying to converse with the driver and Eleanor and I sit in the back rolling our eyes and guffawing at Dean's inability to understand what the driver is saying and the driver's inability to comprehend Dean's colloquialisms. Upon starting the engine, I had my doubts that it could make it out of the street, let alone to Kota Bharu. But we chugged along at a leisurely pace; not too much tooting and passing (which is unusual for a taxi ride in Asia). The 'Nastie Hair and Beauty Parlour' caught my eye but it was a massive Buddha statue that we actually took a detour ... read more
