Two friends off on adventures around South America and beyond

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago August 29th 2012

Needless to say we slept relatively well through the night journey from Puerta Varas and after leaving our bags at left luggage at the bus station we decided to tackle the allusive hill that we failed on our second day in Chile. Again it presented more problems, after deciding to walk there (1 and a half hrs) the chair lift was not operating not letting this stop us we thought we’d put our glutes through a work out and trek up the ‘hill’ initially we went the wrong way up hill, through a mountain bike track, when we realised that we could get stranded in the middle of a mountain so we doubled back and took the correct route. We climbed for approximately an hr to the top in the blazing heat the hottest day we ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas August 28th 2012

So goodbye Pucon and our hostel family there (it was hugs and kisses all round when we left) off on a 5 hour trip to Puerto Varas. More bad Spanish and we arrived an hour later than we thought we would, the tour office we were supposed to visit was closed and we managed to trek the 15mins to our hostel to be shown to a room with a snuggling couple in a double bed in the middle (awkward). Thinking we had missed our tour and would have to reschedule we chilled in the morning only to be greeted by a smiling American ready to pick us up to go off trekking the local volcano -whoops! What a day though navigating a dodgy trail over lava thousands of years old and getting within 2 hours of ... read more

South America » Chile » Araucanía » Pucón August 24th 2012

Day 4 Pucon a Chile Wanaka/Queenstown a small town of tourist/excursion shops cafes and bars. That afternoon we took ourselves to the local hot pools on a local bus our Spanish is improving (slightly) much more natural than De Bretts. We encountered a quite unusual “spiritual” man who was trying to read our auras?! Apparently no one is going to mess with Rhi and Amy has come across some F*ckwit blokes in her time . . . The trip there and back was an experience in itself the bus driver taking a detour to drop something off to a mate! Again we were unfortunate in that our volcano climb was cancelled because of the high winds and snowboarding was out as for the same reason. Not letting this keep us down we caught another local bus ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago August 22nd 2012

Sorry for the delay . . .we are in Brazil now but here are our Chile musings. What can we say about Chile except 10 days was not enough to see the full potential of this beautiful country but it has planted a seed to make us want to come back…… After a long haul flight from Auckland where our air steward was trying to get us to practice our Spanish we successfully managed to catch a bus from the airport to the city centre. When we arrived, the cheap and adventurous backpackers we are walked the 30 minutes to our hostel. The first thing we noticed was that we felt safe and not threatened nor did anyone seem to bat an eye that we were traipsing through the CBD with back-packs on in the mid-morning ... read more
