I first met Michael when I was in Peru on the conservation project; he is British but lives in a town near Portimao in the Algarve. He met me at the station and took me back to his new house, where he lives with his Mum Elaine. The house is beautiful and has a view of the sea from the balcony. Elaine is lovely, she took us out for Chinese food in the evening, we had a bit of a walk around the town and on the beach, and we met up with Michael’s friend Micha for a drink. Michael has lived there for 11 years and went to an International school. His Mum works as a teacher at the school. Next day Michael and I went to a medieval town called Silves and went inside ... read more

On my way to the airport in Milan a Moroccan guy called Saad started speaking to me, he was such a lovely guy, we arranged to meet up in Casablanca when I go, how exciting! Then on the plane (2 hours late of course) I started trying to have a conversation with a Portuguese guy called Umberto who doesn’t speak English. So we ended up giving up on trying to speak to each other and listening to Cat Empire on my mp3 player instead, which he said he likes! My host in Lisbon was so fantastic! Antoñio was recommended to me for a host by Emi who I stayed with in Prague, she went to stay with him before. He picked me up from the airport with his three friends Fred, Tania and Evania and we ... read more

Turin I ended up having 3 different couchsurfers for my 3 nights in Turin, so it was a bit manic and I ended up spending quite a bit on baggage storage at the train station! My first host was Amor, a Spanish lady with two sweet little girls called Alice and Gaia. I thought I would be staying with her the whole time but when I arrived she told me it could only be for one night! How annoying! But she was lovely, made me dinner and breakfast and gave me a pair of earrings that she had made. In the morning I walked with her towards where she works and she told me lots of things about Turin, recommended restaurants and things, and gave me a map. So off I went to explore Turin, and ... read more

Genova Well it took me ages to get to Genova because of the floods in Provence, trains all full up/ delayed / had to run for the last train to Genova where I had to change, but made it phew! And my poor host had to pick me up from the station at 9pm, so late! But it was all worth it when I met him, the fabulous Fabrizio, what an amazing guy! He has a beautiful appartment, full of rock memorabilia and loads of cool stuff, and a great view of Genova. I had my own double bed and he cooked me amazing pasta with pesto. And then he and his friends took me out in the town. His two friends Andrea and JJ were absolutely hilarious, I don't think I stopped laughing the whole ... read more

Marseille Part 1! I arrived in Marseille, walked out the station, and it was love at first sight, what a fantastic city! The buildings are all run down but it is so full of character, bustling and alive. I think it is a city that is very well loved! I went to meet my host by a metro station. I was a bit early and wanted to find some food but I was too early for the restaurants to be open, so I was walking past all these lovely restaurants selling crepes and salads, but none were serving until 7, so I ended up in a fast food restaurant doh! I met Ameline and we went to the office where her friends work to pick them up. It was a very chilled office, a group of ... read more

My friend Marlene I met in Peru in the jungle, I went to stay with her for a while in Trier. I wazs lucky because she met me at Munich station, having been home for the weekend, so I didn't have to take the long rail to Trier by myself! We had a good catch up (and some ice cream) on the train. Marlene is a student at Trier university, she studied biological geography; lots of things about plants, soil and frogs by the sounds of it! She lives in a block of flats near the university, so thats where we headed. She wants to move soon because since she moved in the block is completely covered in scaffolding- she has no windows! She has a flatmate called Andreas who is very friendly! Marlene cooked us ... read more

I arrived at Munich station and met Urmila my host. She is Indian, has lived in Australia since she was 1, and now lives in Seattle with her boyfriend. She works for Microsoft as a software developer, and they transferred her to Munich for a year. So Urmila has a very interesting background and was fantastic to talk to about all the different places and cultures she knows. We went for a walk through Munich that evening, stopping at a square where Hitler staged a coup. There is a plaque on the floor commemorating the people who died fighting against him, and a church we went inside. An alley way behind the square was where people would walk who wanted to avoid the square, because every time they walked through they had to hail Hitler. We ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague June 13th 2010

On the way to Prague I stopped off in Dresden for 2 hours, not long but enough to see the town centre. Dresden is full of very grand buildings, but very pretty! One of the best things was on the wall of one street is a ‘’Procession of Princes’’, a kind of huge mural made entirely of porcelain, it was stunning! And the restored Frauenkirche, (which Caro in Berlin had kindly told me the history of) the original was completely bombed to the ground in the war, and it was such a major symbol to the people of Dresden that the people rallied together and raised all the money to build a new one. It looked beautiful on the outside but inside was a bit gaudy, the stone was a bit pink for me! I liked ... read more

I met my good friend Matilda at Berlin station- was great to see her! We eventually found our way to our hosts' house, and dumped our bags. Sebastian was in the house, he is from Munster orignally but lives and works in Berlin. His girlfriend Claudia is Italian and works at Check Point Charlie museum, so that is where we decided to go, to see her. We found her looking very bored on the shop desk, so think she was pleased to see us! She let us in to the museum the back way, which meant we saw all the stuff about tearing down the wall and all the escape attempts, but because the museum was so huge we never got to find out why the wall was built in the first place! So we left ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hamburg » Hamburg May 26th 2010

Hamburg I stayed with a lovely girl in Hamburg called Myla, she was great it was just like being round a mates house! We did lots of chatting, she cooked us a meal of chicken salad, and then we went for a walk to a harbour nearby. It was really pretty there, a very nice area of Hamburg. It was strangely pretty though, because the harbour was full of boats and metal structures, it wasn´t asthetically pleasing at all, but peaceful and in the low light with all the harbour lights on it looked really nice! There were lots of restaurants there, including one owned by ´´the German Jamie Oliver´´, which looked very nice! There was a small beach with a bar on it, loads of people sat outside, including us drinking a refreshing fizzy rhubarb ... read more
