I have seen the future, a giant shopping mall interconnecting small residential enclaves, parks and roads. The mall reaches in every direction, polished floors gleam, shop fronts sparkle, a temple to consumerism, every need and desire can be met by the purchase of a 40inch plasma screen TV or a computer so smart it doesn't need an operator. The streets, those that are not part of the mega-mall-opilis are clean, empty of all but traffic which flows orderly, controlled by lights indicating lane and speed. People are well behaved, come from many different ethnic origins, speak in a variety of tongues but share a common language in English. The future is controlled, everything is legislated for, government departments encourage breeding of the people through the SDU (Social Development Unit). In certain places; no food or drink ... read more

How to write about paradise? How is it possible to keep finding a paradise more perfect than the last? When will I find a way to stay in paradise longer than a week? How many mentions of the word paradise is too many? The Perhentian Islands were as close as I've come to a vision of paradise, island paradise, diving, beaches, coconut palms and all at a price that even a stingy backpacker like me could afford. I stayed on Perhentian Kecil, the little island, on Long Beach. Sand white and squeaky under foot, water clear to the bottom in the bay, very few waves, generally very calm. Palms drape over the beach, the sounds of the jungle behind mix with the gentle lapping of waves. Nights lead to phosphorescent swimming, bonfires, guitars and socialising with ... read more

Some people travel solely to experience the great rail journeys of the world - the Orient Express, the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Jungle Express. The Jungle Express for me turned out to be a 4 hour leg of the Singapore to Thai border train, on a local train. Hot sweaty, confined, slow, but with exotic scenery from every window, we made progress snail like towards the Taman Negara National Park, stopping at every reed shack in the jungle (or so it seemed). The Taman Negara National Park pulsates deep in the heart of the Malaysian Peninsula, more land life than any place I've seen. The park is home to tigers (100 est), Rhinos and Elephants (400 est), unfortunately these larger animals are wary of human contact (justifiably given our record of hunting species to extinction) - ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands September 10th 2005

Explored by James Cameron and subsequently named after him, the Cameron Highlands are famous for their tea plantations, fruit and vegetables and forests. I stayed in Fathers Guest House which was nice. The facilities and prices are good. (Wifi is intermittently available - weather permitting - from some nice antennas somewhere nearby) After an unpleasant night following a pleasant meal, I decided to make the most of the afternoon and go on a trip to an Orang Asli (Original People) village - the guest house operates tours to a local village, most of the villages that remain in their traditional state shun visitors, but this one due to a member of staff being the chiefs brothers wife welcomes the backpackers on one of the organised tours. The kids gather just prior to the arrival of the ... read more

Into KL at 6am... damn another of those missing days, too late to check in, too early to have had a decent nights sleep, 4 hours bus sleep and wandering around the hostels looking for a place to stay - so again the usual, take the first place that has a sofa spare. Eventually I checked in to the Pudu Hostel, windowless dorm rooms, but a friendly vibe and air-conditioning, probably essential for breathing during the night. Kuala Lumpur bustles, monument to a Tiger Economy. National sport, shopping, national stadium, the golden triangle Kuala Lumpur. In the market for a waterproof housing and a small digital camera I spent the first few days searching the malls for a suitable model and price, more research on the Internet, confirming the quotes as really great prices, and the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don September 3rd 2005

Hat Yuan to Hat Rin, Hat Rin to Thang Sala, Thang Sala to Surret Thani, Surret Thani to Krabi, Krabi to Koh Phi Phi, 2 ferries, 4 buses across a country in 14hours heading from one island backpacker paradise to another - or least that was the plan. After missing two ferries (late night and early morning) an unexpected night in Hat Rin and a late ferry across from Thang Sala to Surret Thani, another unexpected night in Surret Thani in a guest house where the second floor acts as an impromptu gambling den, complete with uniformed cops as part of the party. Buses and then more ferries and finally arriving 72 hours after my intended departure. Phi Phi, hit heavily by the tsunami, but still beautiful, still paradise. The effects of the tsunami are apparent, ... read more

Any excuse for a party. It's a fair accusation, and a full moon is a fairly lame excuse. It's just nature, it happens 13 times a year, and in most parts of the world, without lycanthropy, passes off without note. Not on Koh Pha Ngan, the next island on from Koh Samui, the scene of one of the largest beach parties in the world, every single month, the other locations for such revelry are Ios in Greece, and somewhere in Goa, India. I met people at this party that had been to all three - this is the original and biggest. The reputation of the full moon party is for excess, dancing and drugs. To be honest drugs would have been easy to get hold of, many of the cafés will “serve” special requests, but on ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket August 18th 2005

Year 2004, December the 26th - 7.30am - the sea drew back and away from the shore on the tropical island paradise of Phuket, bewildered tourists looked on at the phenomena little realising that deep in the Andaman sea an earthquake had dropped the sea floor. At speeds of 500 miles an hour a 40 foot wave headed out from the centre point. The effects were felt all around the Indian Ocean and caused total devastation in parts of Sri Lanka and Indonesia. In Thailand the most prosperous and touristic coast was hit. In all several thousand tourists lost their lives, and hundreds of thousands of people local to the regions lost theirs. Phuket was where the most tourists were affected or killed - one of the Bloggers - Anna was there One week on from ... read more

Bangkok has been notably described as the “Arsehole of Asia” and “Cesspool” by others on Travelblog. After 48 hours I think these titles are a little unfair, but the Thai name - Krung Thep - translating to “City of Angels” - is a touch on the flattering side -maybe somewhere in the city, between the skyscrapers and the slow moving stinky rivers there maybe a real angel, but one thing is sure - there are plenty of girls who'll be your angel for one night for only 300 baht! and there are plenty of guys searching for angels. The sex tourism aspect of Thailand has been present ever since Heathrow Airport waiting lounge, chatting to a “business man” while waiting for a flight - “I love Thailand... a bottomless barrel of women who all think I ... read more

Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora April 4th 2005

Looking over the plains of Thessaly in the centre of Greece is an area of amazing rock formations, made yet still more impressive by the addition of monasteries perched on the top of some of the 400m columns of rock. Meteora so good Linkin Park named an album after it. Geologically the place was formed by the movement upwards of a ancient sea bed or river delta, then subsequent earth quakes and erosion. Though originally founded before the Ottoman empire reached the region, during the height of the occupation monks came to the remote monasteries to be able to practice their religion. The impression on the traveller is amazement - "how did people back in the 1400's get to the top of these towers of rock to build these monasteries?" and awe - "wow - this ... read more
