Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok August 17th 2009

Hi everyone from the city of angels, We tried posting a blog the other day but i think the internet died so it didn't work :( so here is a summary: We're on the final countdown to when we depart Thailand to head back to England Kelly: =( wahhhhhhhh. We've made all the final preparations: we've just arrived from an overnight bus from Chiang Mai. It was ok except it smelt a bit like poo (blame Kelly) and there were some laddy lads from leeds behind us. We arrived at Bangkok at about 5 in the morning...yay. We are booked in to stay at a hotel for one night then we leave there at 6 in the evening tomorrow to go to the airport. Happy days. We are waiting for check in to open in a ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang August 11th 2009

Hi all, following on from our last blog we have been today to the waterfalls near Luang Prabang-which was amazing!! There is one big waterfall and the rest were smaller pools that were a really nice green colour and there were fish that nibbled your toes! It was really nice to be able to have fun without all the health and safety laws (even though it was a bit dangerous)... Today we're going to go to the night market to get some more cool stuff :D and we both had bagels this morning which were so tasty!! We have got a card reader so we're going to be putting up some photos for you all to see of my (Alex) Tarzan monkey antics. We also went to a Bear sanctuary, for the bears rescued from hunters ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang August 10th 2009

Hello all, This is just a quick entry to let you all know we are safe and doing well. I (Alex) don't have man-flu anymore and we are in the lovely Luang Prabang province. The shopping here is amazing!! So we are stocking up on gifts and the like. We have sourced a camera wire so we will be putting on our photos later. We will also be adding to this blog later (we haven't been up to much!!) But we will keep you updated on what we have left to do. Oh and the monks here look so wise...so so wise. When I was talking to Granny J about her experiences at the Battle of Hastings we saw so many of them in their orange robes. Coolio. Anyhoo, we have got a photo we just ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng August 7th 2009

Hello everyone! It is raining hard now as we seem to be in the middle of a storm so we thought it was a good time to write =) Last night we went to a restaurant which had 2 resident stray kitties and they were so adorable, so small! So we gave them our leftover meat and they seemed very pleased with that and took photos of course! There are lots of cats, dogs, chickens, roosters and cows all around Vang Vieng just wandering happily. Today we decided to rent bikes and explore the nearby caves in the mountains which sounds easy but a 14km cycle ride was actually quite difficult! (For me anyway). Especially the fact that the bikes weren't exactly mountain bikes and the roads were... well.. nonexistent! We actually went to two caves ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng August 6th 2009

We left Hanoi to journey to Vinh which is closer to the border with Laos. We only spent a night at Vinh as it was only a stopover really, so in the morning we started our 8 hour journey to Vientiane (pronounced as Vee-en-tee-en or Vee-en-chen for the locals). The noticeable difference between Vietnam and Laos is the busy-ness. No one honks their horn and things seem a lot more laid back here. Almost...pleasant to walk around... The standard of driving generally seems a lot better and safer and zebra crossings may actually mean zebra crossings... The border crossing went smoothly and as we passed from Vietnam into Laos the scenery changed, there were much less houses and the mountains seem to rise more steeply from the plains straight into the clouds! We have quite a ... read more

Hello all! Sorry we haven't been able to write a blog for a while-lack of time and internet access I'm afraid. We completed our Vietnam trip yesterday and are about to commence the last leg of our Journey-Laos. However the people we were using to borrow a camera wire have departed from the trip so we're going to have to seek alternate arrangements for uploading photos. We will see! We have been adding photos to our last two blogs as we had not previously put them up. SO we are now going to write up what we have been doing. Kelly: We arrived in Hanoi and had a free day to explore the city in which we chose to visit the "Temple of Literature" which was the first university established in Vietnam in the 1000's and ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué July 27th 2009

Hi all, Firstly we would like to point out to everyone that we added some photos on our previous blog so you should check them out!! We left Hoi An with our tailored garments and full to the brim with French pastries to head to Hue where we plan to see some ancient tombs and citadels. Since our last post we pretty much haven't done much!! The last few days have been spent purely relaxing on the beach and eating really good food. We have been traveling round the city on our bicycles which has been getting us fit. Unfortunately there were a couple of incidents where other members of the hotel (not in our group) had accidents. But we're ok!! So Happy Days. The only incident Kelly and I had was on our way back ... read more

So when we last left off we were in the capital city of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh. Unfortunately internet has been hard to come by but we are now in Hoi An and have managed to locate some... I may also be able to upload some photos too (fingers crossed) So here's what we've been doing so far: Nha Trang. This is where the beach was so Kelly was a happy camper. We arrived there via overnight train (more on this later) and on the first day we went on a boat trip to some islands off the coast. We went to a fishing island which had lovely fresh seafood (if I liked the stuff). We didn't spend very long there-too many common people. BUT we then weighed anchor (My attempt at Navy speak) and set ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta July 21st 2009

So we left off yesterday saying that were were off to the Mekong Delta to another homestay! This one proved to be a luxury homestay compared with our other one (we think the host family were wealthier), as it had real toilets and showers! We drove to the Mekong Delta from Saigon which took about 2 1/2 hours, and went over a massive suspension bridge across the river... the view was pretty dramatic. The Mekong river Delta is the 'fruit bowl' of South East Asia and produces much of the regions tropical fruits, especially coconuts! We saw big barges with literally TONS of coconuts piled precariously on top of them... We started off the trip with visiting various 'cottage industries', one was a where they make coconut candy and banana candy. We got to try ... read more

Asia July 20th 2009

This is just a quick note to let everyone know that we're okay in Saigon and are leaving today for a homestay in the Mekong delta! But tomorrow we will be back in Saigon and hopefully able to do a proper entry to let you know how it was. After that it's the overnight train to Nha Trang..... fingers crossed for the weather! That's about all the news we've got time for now! I hope that everyone's fine at home =) regarding Top Gear we saw that before we came and it made me look forward even more to seeing all the amazing scenery like the hai van pass and stuff! xxx Lots of Love K&A... read more
