Ken Cross

Originally from England, with my Dad being in the military, I was lucky enough to travel the world as a kid and lived in Germany, Singapore, England Scotland and Wales.

I joined the Royal Air Force myself and subsequently travelled worldwide as aircrew. Bev and I took many holidays abroad, sometimes three per year. The highlight has to be Route 66.
I took early retirement and we are now living in Spain, we dont have the funds to travel as much now, but have seen a fair bit of Spain, Portugal Italy, Switzerland and France. We also had an unscheduled week in the Saarland when our car broke down, and took the opportunity to explore Luxembourg and the Saar.

California September 1991 The Gulf War (Part 1) was over and it was time to get married. British Airways were offering half price holidays for “Gulf War Heroes” I was eligible so I suggested to Bev that we book a Honeymoon. I suggested California but she dismissed this out of hand. My memory fails me but, some of the words she may have used were Loud, Brash, Crazy, Weird, Tiresome, Incompetent, Scary and Violent, and, I would never go there!! (I may have made some of those up!) Mon 2nd Sept We married on 31st August 1991 and two days later were flying British Airways to LAX! (Well sorry Bev, Hong Kong was fully booked!) We hit the jackpot as one of the stewardesses was the girlfriend of a colleague on my Squadron, and boy did ... read more

Route 66 A Road Trip For The New Millenium, 2000 Background: Ken and Bev Cross and friends Rob and Penny Ballard from Swindon in Wiltshire (UK) wanted to mark the Millennium with a special holiday. Two and a half years previously Ken had started planning and researching via books and the Internet, and using CD Rom Map and Go software. Ken and Bev had been driving around the States ever since they "did" California and Nevada on their honeymoon in 1991. Day 1 to 3 - Chicago and Illinois A very pleasant flight from London to Detroit on North West, thanks to it only being 50 % full. A totally under whelming welcome by US Immigration officials at the airport, why are they always so humourless and aggressive? Our second leg was not so pleasant, after ... read more

New York, New York After being spoilt with accommodation on our journey round Tennessee, we stayed in Queens to save on hotel costs and it turned out ok. The Pan American Hotel was comfortable but in need of an update. Cost and hotel airport shuttle were our main consideration but we also got free internet access. Now, If only I knew somebody with STATUS things might have been different The subway was a ten minute walk from the hotel, we navigated the system quite well, with only a couple of cock ups, and found it non threatening. Although the stations were a bit smelly and shabby, the trains themselves were good and were clean. The journey into Manhattan took between 30 and 45 minutes depending on final destination, We found contrary to belief that New Yorkers ... read more

I first met Davey Crocket when, as a young English kid living in Singapore I was taken to see Fess Parker in Davy Crockett and the River Pirates. I was hooked, I got my first "coonskin" hat that Christmas. Imagine my delight when our American friends Dante and Barb moved to Tennessee after a hurricane destroyed their town, Punta Gorda, in Florida. Day 1 We flew Continental from Heathrow to Newark, a pleasant flight but not a pleasant welcome so let’s not spoil this journal and skip our arrival at Newark Airport. We stayed the night at a Howard Johnson Hotel, well we wanted close to the airport and we could not have got any closer, unless, that is, they moved the 6 lane highway that came between us. Still we were not disturbed as jet ... read more
