Indeed amazing The Qutb Minar complex really is quite spectacular. If I remember it right, when I wandered around there were not many people there. I think it is a site that many people don't know about. /Ake
I am not proud of my photos My photos from the days when I took transparencies have a very low quality. I have recently bought better equipment to use when I digitize them. I hope that my pics will retain more colours in the transfer from analogue to digital from now on. /Ake
Castles and Palaces I found your collection of palaces interesting. I doubt whether I will visit Sweden again as I have so many other places which I have not visited on my priority list.
Definition of a castle and palace For me, a castle is a fortified home built during the period of time when the world was dangerous, while a palace is an ostentatious home with no fortifications as the world was more peaceful.
Sounds like a useful definition That definition makes sense to me. So I believe all the buildings is this blog entry would be classified as palaces and not castles. I hope you still felt it was interesting and that my recommendation didn't come out as a disappointment. /Ake
Tenerife Lovely - I have many memories of Tenerife from visits there as a child. I'd love to go back and revisit these places again. So nice to see you travelling abroad again, and I completely agree - it doesn't matter where you go, at least you are travelling abroad again! I got such thrills from visiting the Isle of Man last December that I probably wouldn't have got under other circumstances. May there be many more travels for you to come!
Also hope for many future travels I also hope that there are many future travels for me in the years ahead. I am currently writing blogs from our trip in Germany last summer. I will start publish them a few weeks from now. /Ake
Good Memory I am very impressed at what a good memory you must have to write these entries from twenty years ago - well done! So sorry to hear about the nasty incidents, not nice at all. I had a similar experience in Athens around 20 years ago - a "friendly" local approached me on the street and offered to buy me a drink in a local bar. When I declined he became very angry indeed. Good to trust one's instincts I think. The minibus ride must have been awful...
Tenerife Over the years I've heard mixed reviews from people about the Canary Islands. They look lovely and I look forward to checking them out in the future. Thanks for sharing your impressions. The drive on those roads may be similar to the one we had in Corsica.
It was a nice place, but not more than that Teneriffe was a nice place to visit and we enjoyed it when we were there. But we don't really feel the need to go back. The only reason for that would be to go to the places we for various reasons didn't get to see this time around. But we feel that time would be better spent visiting some other place instead. /Ake
Great Photos I think you have great photos here actually, Ake. I imagine these were the days when you only got to see your photos after you'd developed the films when you'd arrived back home, rather than with today's instant imaging cameras. A fine effort to capture the beauty of Tunisia - well done! 😊👍
Thanks Yes, I could only see the result after the film was developed. Sometimes I had the most beautiful landscape glowing red in the sunset and when I came home it was all sand coloured because I didn't get the setting of the camera precisely what I needed. Nowadays photography is so much easier. /Ake
Old Travels Great idea to be writing about old travels. I've often considered doing the same, and hope to eventually. You're right, the photos look so old, yet it was only around 20 years ago - how does that happen?! I visited Tunisia around 10 years ago, and just loved the Star Wars locations! Beautiful country!
Photos look old I used slides back then, not digital photography. Possibly the photos have aged/colours have faded in that time. When I had them digitized it is possible that device I used was cheap and that would of course also affect the quality. I have a new device for making digital photos from slides. When I test that I will see if the quality is improved. /Ake
Canary Islands We have not been to the Canary Islands and have only given them minimal thought. I enjoyed reading your blog and we may need to head that direction. I'm glad you came up with a quick solution when your other plans fell apart.
Worth a visit, one visit We found that Tenerife was worth a visit, but only one visit. We can't see any reason to go back. If we would go to the Canary Islands again some day we would go to one of the other islands instead. /Ake
Arches and Doors A magnificent collection. I have posted some of your pics in our 'Doors, Doors & more Doors' thread in the Photography Forum. Check 'em out.
El Jem Amphitheatre Your Tunisia blogs make Tunisia at the top of "the Must Do" lists. So much to see to immerse in its history. In modern times it was the birth of the Arab Spring...in ancient times wow wow wow! Thank you
And a "want to return" place I'd love to go back there some day because there is more to see than I had time for. I don't think it is safe at the moment though. /Ake
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
