It was a beautiful drive from Rabat to Todra Gorge, it took us just under two days of driving to get there. We saw monkeys on the side of the road, and villiages in places you wouldn't expect to see villiages. In a seemingly endless expanse of nothingness would emerge villages made of mud bricks surrounded by palm trees and corn fields. Irrigation is amazing. When we arrived in Todra Gorge we started in the incredibly touristy portion along with hoards of French and Spanish tour busses. It was a pretty cool view from the centre of the gorge, but for us, the fun was only starting. We camped further up the gorge at a small hotel away from the crowds. For the first time on the trip we were away from city lights and campground ... read more

Africa » Morocco » Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaer » Rabat October 2nd 2007

The primary purposes of our next two big cities were to obtain our visas for Mali and Mauritania. We also had lots of time in Rabat to take in some of the sites and catch up on laundry, internet and groceries. While we were in Rabat, we were staying at the Camping a la Plage, in Sale, which is across the water way from the main city. We were told that we could take a petit taxi from central Rabat back to our campsite. After doing a few errands in the city we decided to try. The driver was very kind and was quick to point out to the other drivers on the road why we almost got into 2 accidents along the way. They're all so friendly the way they hang out the window and ... read more

Volubulis dates back to 2nd or 3rd century AD. All that remain are ruins, which some have been reconstructed by the french, to give us an idea of what it may have looked like way back then. There are also still some beautiful mosaics, which unfortunately are fading fast in the heat of the sun. Some people think that Volubulis was abanded because too many people were dying from lead poisoning. The water pipes were made out of lead. Here are a few neat pictures, again the truck kitty paid for a guide. Unfortunately the guide was not very enthusiatic due to the heat, and the lack of food and water (Ramadan). The tour lasted no more than an hour.... read more

Fez is one of the main cities in Morocco. The Medina is one of the largest and is so easy to get lost and disorientated, so our trip kitty paid for a guide to take us around the city of Fez and the Medina. We started by visiting a ceramic factory then over to the various view points, again we took a tonne of photos. I think at this rate we will be taking close to 100 Gigs of photos, anybody want to come over for a slide show after we get back?! While in Fez we saw a bunch of neat stores, where they take you into the show room, give you a demonstration, then hope you buy something from them, then the guide who took you there, will also get the commission from the ... read more

Moulay Idriss is a smaller city of about 20 000 people that dates back to approximately 780 AD, from my recollection of what the guide was saying, the King has a special fondness for Moulay Idriss, and therefore prohibits the people from making any changes or upgrades to the city. It was founded by a descendant of the prophet Mohammed. When our big truck arrived in the tiny market place square, it had only a little trouble backing up in to a parking place. Immediately there was somebody at the truck door offering to be our guide to show us around for 20 Dh each, me and Jordan and a couple others opted out, and just sort of wandered up towards the direction the look out should be. Some old guy kept following us and pointing ... read more

Hi Everyone. Sorry, it´s been a while since the last post. We thought we´d summarize the last week or so. Following the wedding in St. Quentin, we took the train to Arras and hung out there for a couple of days. We didn´t do anything special, but it was nice to catch up on laundry and internet. Arras is a pretty little town and our hotel was at a great location in the central square. From Arras, we took the train to Calais where we spent the night before taking the ferry across the English Channel to Dover. Not much to Calais other than the Ferry terminal. We stayed at a great bed and breakfast in Dover just down the hill from the Castle. We spent a couple of days exploring the Castle and the famous ... read more

While in France we were lucky enough to be invited to attend Fabien (Kathie's "brother" from France) and Gwen's wedding. The wedding was awesome, the food was incrediable, we ended up partying until 5am. Here are a few of the pictures. Thank goodness Jordan spoke some french, and my french seemed not too bad, at least we were able to understand, and communicate with everybody else. It was a great opportunity to see everyone again, I haven't been in France since 1999, so it was close to 8-9 years since I'd seen my family from France. Jordan was happy that the french ladies seem to enjoy the Canadian accent as much as we enjoy the French accent. Nous voulons dire encore merci pour nous inviter au marriage. ça nous a fait beaucoup de plaisir de tous ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy » Rouen September 13th 2007

We ended up renting a car for the few days that we were here in Rouen, so we actually never really spent too much time in Rouen itself, our hotel was about 20 minutes (or so they said) outside of Rouen. The first day it took us over 2 hours trying to find our hotel, google maps did not help what so ever! Google maps has everything based on road names but over here all the directions are based on city/village directions. For example to get to Bourg-Archard (small village) where hotel was located we had to pass through 3-4 other small villages on the way, Bourg-Archard wasn't even on our map, we had to stop at a restaurant to ask for directions. It was pretty stressful for Jordan as the navigator while Kathie drove. "I ... read more

Monday Travel Day! Today we set out on the train to travel to Mont St Michel. It was a workout lugging around our packs again, but we made it. On the train we talked to a nice man from Chambord. He has 3 kids and was born in Evreux. It was a great opportunity to practice our french. He even invited us to his house for dinner (or so we understood). People in France are so nice! :-) We checked into our hotel in Mont St Michel at around 5:30, used the internet at another hotel for a bit, then went for supper. Our first restaurant meal in France! I (Jordan) had steamed mussles, lamb curry, and frozen nougat (all the local fare). Tonight we also discovered the locally brewed cider, tasted much like Strongbow, but ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris September 10th 2007

Thanks to everybody for their concern about my ankle. It's much better now and it's not stopping us from doing what we want. In France, they send you to the hospital for everything, because heath care is free over here of course. Really, all I needed was some ice and Advil. Day 4 Tonight we made our way back to the Eiffel Tower and rode the elevator to the top. It was an amazing view of the city lit up at night, but the top level was incredibly crowded! Should have had something to eat before getting in line (eating often is going to be the key to our survival this year together). Day 5 Off to Versailles today, but not away from the tourist crowds. It was a bit of an adventure getting there because ... read more
