Well, here it is. The moment we have all been waiting for. Our most frequently asked question this week since we've been in New Zealand is: "Where are the mountains? Are the mountains pretty? Does it really look like it did in Lord of the Rings?" Up until now, our experience in NZ has consisted of big cities, government offices, and used car lots. Most of our time has been spent filling out paperwork and researching potential jobs from the confines of our hotel rooms. It hasn't been exotic or glorious or scenic (aside from the Sky Tower dinner in Auckland, but even then we couldn't really see any "mountains.") Until today. Today we achieved freedom in the form of a 1995 Toyota Corolla. After the wasted two days going after the Subaru (which turned out ... read more

Brace Yourselves... So before I go any further, we have some exciting and unexpected news. And it doesn't involve cars. I know what you're thinking. I can see the wheels in your mind spinning and the look of shock and surprise on your faces. And yes, it is true. Our family is growing! It certainly wasn't planned. But poor Hungry has been so lonely lately, so miserable stuffed inside a dark purse all day...we decided it was time. Time to get him some friends. So without any further ado, I would like to introduce you to the newest members of the Rogers clan...Rebel the black sheep, and Haka, the kiwi bird! (Come on, admit it...we got you!) Our final day in Auckland was spent touring the national museum (right down the street from our guesthouse). I ... read more

Well, at long last, we have arrived in our new home-away-from-home for the next year! We're currently in Auckland, getting our permits and paperwork underway, before heading down to the south island tomorrow night. Our final day in Sydney was spent being aggravated at our accommodation and sulking over the ridiculous price tags on everything. We wanted so much to explore some of the city, but it was prohibitively expensive. Lovely city, we just unfortunately hit at the wrong time! Hopefully our dollar will strengthen over the next year and we can see some of the country on the way home. On the brighter side, most of you will be thrilled to hear that Jeremy FINALLY got a haircut (from an old Italian barber)...so he now looks like a 15-year old again. (What can I say? ... read more

Malaysian Satay Skewers: $17 Singapore Dollars Two Singapore Slings: $48 Singapore Dollars Malaysian Satay Skewers and Two Singapore Slings in the Ambiance of the 1920’s Raffles Hotel Long Bar, where the Singapore Sling was invented: Priceless! Our final day in Singapore was spent dodging rain and hiding indoors. We headed for Orchard Road, a famous shopping district, and found ourselves at a showing of the new movie 2012 (one of the worst movies of the year, for sure)…but hey, it killed a couple hours on a rainy afternoon (stupid monsoons!). The day was saved by the aforementioned drinks and appetizers at Raffles Hotel, a gorgeous icon in the center of town where relics like Hemingway and Chaplin once sat and kicked back the delicious cocktail consisting of gin, cherry brandy, cointreau, pineapple juice, grenadine, and bitters. ... read more

Can anyone name the movie I stole that quote from? ("Clearly you've never been to Singapore.") If you think you know, post your guess! I love movie trivia, don't you?? And on that note, no, up until today, we had never been to Singapore either! But here we sit, in a groovy lounge at the "Inn Crowd" Backpackers, smack in the center of Little India, Singapore. The instant we stepped off the plane, we loved it (and not just because we were out of Phnom Penh)! Actually, I guess I should back up just a tad. Yesterday we endured a nearly seven-hour bus ride from Siem Reap back to Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh (which we'd passed through last week on our way in from Vietnam). When we arrived at the "bus station" (a joke, really), there ... read more

Well, this has got to be a first. Jeremy is out on a lovely sunny afternoon, our last in Siem Reap, shopping and getting a massage. I am sitting in our nice cold hotel room, exhausted, worn-out, and fighting (possibly) another head-cold. And before you ask, "That jerk! Why isn't he there taking care of you?" let me assure you that I sent him out willingly after barely staying awake through lunch. I'm not the best of company today, I guess, and I wish I had more energy for our final day here. But alas, I think road-weariness is finally creeping up on me... But enough of that. You didn't open this blog to listen to me mope and complain. We had a fantastic two days prior to this one (hence the reason I'm so worn ... read more

Well, you know me. It was only a matter of time before I did something dumb. We awoke yesterday raring to go on our second day of touring Angkor. It was another perfect sunny day, despite weather forecasts to the contrary. Kong met us downstairs at 9am and off we went in our little tuk-tuk, passing (finally!) a caravan of elephants on the road. Our first stop was Preah Khan, a 12th century Buddhist monastery that once housed over 1,000 monks. It was quite run-down and overgrown, as most of the temples we visited that day were, but that was what was so beautiful about it. We wandered around outside the temple and found some beautifully overgrown trees shooting right up out of the wall. I couldn't get a very good shot from the ground, so ... read more

Step aside, Great Wall. Get out of here, Yangshuo. Move down the list, Ha Long Bay. You've been demoted, Summer Palace. We have a sight that beats them all, a sight that is really too fantastic to put into words. It trumps all else we've seen in Asia, and honestly, it trumps most ancient sights I've seen anywhere else in the world. The fantastic thing is, this sight was buried in the jungle for the better part of a MILLENIUM, completely unknown to the outside world until a little French man "stumbled" upon it back in the 1800's. Wars and civil strife in the country made it inaccessible to tourists, even when restoration work had been going on for a century. But now...for the last fifteen years or so, any and all are welcome to Cambodia ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta » Tien Giang » My Tho November 21st 2009

For our final day in Vietnam, we chose to join a day tour of the Mekong River Delta - namely, a small town called "My Tho," and two islands, Phoenix and Unicorn Islands. Our trip commenced with a two-hour bus ride south of Saigon, along the way stopping at what has to be the world's loveliest "rest stop," complete with botanical gardens and tiki huts! Jeremy got what he thought was a grape Fanta, but it turned out to be licorice! Ugh!! I could smell it on the other side of the country! But I lucked out and finally found candied ginger - not only delicious but great for the motion sickness I'm so prone to! We arrived at the river and boarded a small narrow boat to Phoenix Island, which looked like a cross between ... read more

Before I launch into Saigon, I want to update everyone on our itinerary, as we just booked the rest of our flights last night, since we are (sadly) nearing the end of our Asian campaign. On Sunday we will be catching a bus over the border of Cambodia and going directly to Siem Reap, the town bordering the famous Angkor Wat temples. We will spend almost a week there touring the temples before catching a flight down to Singapore for two nights. After that we're hopping a flight to Sydney, Australia, for 3 days, before our final flight to Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday December 5th. We would love to see more of Australia, but right now our dollar to theirs is extremely weak, and it's an expensive country to begin with, so we're hoping that ... read more
