Well, here we are at last. Our final hours of our southeast Asian swing. In about four hours, we'll be heading to the airport in Bangkok. If you math whizzes want a challenge, here ya go: We depart Bangkok at 1am on Thursday. We land in Seattle (7500 miles away) at 11am on Thursday...yet, TWENTY-SIX hours (and two nights) pass in the meantime (10 hours at the airport in Seoul and 16 hours in the air). Then we have an additional thirteen hours of Thursday once we arrive in Seattle. So, for us, Thursday is going to be 41 hours long. Is that the goofiest thing you've ever heard or what?? Anyway, on Friday I graduated from my 3-week course of Thai massage. On the last day, we got to make fun herbal balls used for ... read more

Newsflash: Shark attacks come in waves. Not to worry, we have not been attacked by sharks. (Would be tough, considering we’re more than 500 miles from a beach). However, while discussing the topic of shark attacks with Kristin, a girl from Virginia Beach, we noticed that a lot of shark attacks seem to happen at once, then none for a while. And I made the totally innocent remark that shark attacks come in waves. Lunch resumes as usual. About ten seconds later, I look at Kristin, and she looks at me. And we nearly choke on our papaya salad because we’re laughing until we’re crying. Thus passes a typical lunch break at TMC Massage School. Anyway, now that I’m done playing comedian, back to Thailand. So I’m into my third week of Thai massage school, and ... read more

So, here we are. The last stop on our Asian voyage before we head home (three weeks away!). Thanks to our Lonely Planet Guide, we actually discovered that we are sitting in the southernmost arm of the Himalayas - who knew? After an overnight train ride, we are in Chiang Mai, Thailand's second-biggest city (150,000 people), way up in the northern end of the country. It's our friend Kate's favorite city, and it's not hard to see why. It's picturesque. It's quiet, but there's still plenty to do. The food is incredible and dirt cheap. Want to study Thai massage? Kickboxing? Thai cooking? Rock climbing? Elephant trekking? White water rafting? Play with tigers? It's all right here, in one place. What a great town. So we've been here for nine days now, and it's just flying ... read more

Well, it’s a good thing we left Phuket when we did. Apparently, the weather got so bad there that the airport shut down and even tour buses were on standby. After three days of being locked in our hotel room, watching the downpour outside, the last thing we would have wanted to do was add a few more days to the list. After a smooth one-hour flight on Air Asia, we touched down in Thailand's sprawling capital city of Bangkok. The monsoons have been heavy here, too, and we had a great view of flooded fields and rice paddies on the way in. Luckily, it was not raining, although we could have done without the haze and overcast. Sigh. Anyway, after a quick train ride and taxi ride, we found ourselves stepping into the home of ... read more

Well, I wish had more stunning photos of Phra Nang and the rest of the beautiful coastline for you. I wish I could tell you that the time we spent in Phuket, Thailand's tourism "king" of a resort town, was filled with gloriously sunny days and lots of fun activities. Alas, it was not meant to be. The afternoon after we went horseback riding, it started raining. And it was still raining yesterday when we boarded our flight for Bangkok. Sigh. What a drag. Nothing like being on one of the world's most beautiful islands and being stuck inside because it's pouring down rain. Soooooo...as you can see from the pictures, we took the ferry across the Andaman Sea in hopes that the weather would be good. I grabbed a few decent shots but they're certainly ... read more

So Jeremy and I would be the first to admit that we're beach snobs. Growing up in Florida unfortunately ruins a lot of other beaches you may eventually visit. Show us some mountains, and we're enthralled. The desert? We're entranced. Snow? We think we've died and gone to heaven. But a beach? Eh...we could take it or leave it. And then we came to Krabi. Going back to Tuesday and our departure from Malaysia, we knew it was going to be a long day when we boarded our "mini-bus" (translation: a mini-van redesigned to hold ten people) and saw a television screen blaring cheesy Thai music videos (arguably worse than Cambodian and Chinese music videos). Ten hours later, after a painless border crossing into Thailand (and two mini-bus changeovers) we arrived in the middle of a ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town October 26th 2010

Greetings from Thailand! Before I tell you how we got here, let me briefly relate our final stop in Malaysia - an island off the northwest coast known as Penang. The British East India Trading Company dropped roots here back in the 1700's (to compete with the Dutch), and the architecture heavily reflects the influence. It has the delightful mix of cultures that we found in KL and Melaka, but it was a little run-down and dirtier than the others. Not exactly our favorite destination, but we made the most of it!! We toured the old fort, took our first walk along the Indian Ocean, somehow ended up in Little India during a big celebration (complete with lots and lots of Bollywood music)...and, of course, we ate. A lot. The photos shall tell the tale. I ... read more

Food. Yep, that's about all I have to say. Just the food. It's that good. And on that note, allow me to reveal our "mystery" food from the last blog - the weird one Jeremy was eating in Kuala Lumpur. Our guesses ranged from shaved meat to lung to wontons, and I must admit I'm amazed at how much the food does resemble (in my opinion) thinly sliced lunchmeat. Perhaps you will be surprised to learn, then, that our dish was "Ais Kacang" - a dessert! Basically, a gigantic block of ice-cream is placed under what looks like a meat slicer, shaved into light, airy little pieces, and topped with cornflakes and red beans. This particular flavor was "red bean," although they had some others such as green tea, strawberry, and (the killer) durian. Thanks for ... read more

Greetings from the cultural melting pot that is Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia! We're going to have a fun contest in this blog and see if anyone can guess what Jeremy is holding in the photo below (and the two below that). This was a seriously strange food that was seriously delicious (and that's the only hint you're getting)!! Post your guesses in our comment section and we'll see if anyone is even remotely close; we'll give you the answer in our next blog! Anyway, before I delve into our newest destination, allow me to fill you in on our final day in Singapore. (I found out why I nearly died our first day, by the way. The temperature reached a sizzling 102F, and factoring in the soaring humidity, the heat index was just ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Chinatown October 16th 2010

Last I checked, I was still a native Floridian. If yesterday was any indication, however, I might possibly be mistaken. It's amazing what a year of living in an alpine town with no heating in your house will do to thicken your blood. Just stepping off the plane in Singapore and feeling the blast of 95-degree 100%-humidity filled air was a jolt to the senses. Walking around in it was like being microwaved alive. Seriously, we drank more water and juice yesterday than in the past month combined, and I still felt like I was going to pass out for most of the day. We've each taken four showers since we've been here. Jeremy is handling the heat better than me, but he's fairly melting himself.
