Dateline: October 29, 2018 Hilo, Hawaii Lava, Macadamia Nuts and Black Sand After 4 ½ days at sea, we have sighted land! It’s 75 degrees with a heavy mist rain as we dock in Hilo on the big island of Hawaii. This is the only Hawaiian Island where we will take an organized tour. We are interested in seeing what has happened because of the recent volcanic eruptions. The lava flows stopped about 2 months ago but decimated a number of small towns and neighborhoods as it flowed to the sea. At one point, several months ago, the lava was flowing at 24 miles per hour, continuously, for two months and created 800 new acres of land. We get out our cruise cards and ID and head down the gangway to line up with our tour ... read more

Dateline: Wednesday, October 24, 2018- At Sea 400 miles off LA on course for Hilo, Hawaii Sea Day. Love it, not much to do…unless you want to… then you could be busy all day with dance lessons, trivia, lectures, the ever-popular “napkin folding”, sunning on deck, going to the gym…and on and on. We opt for a relaxing day so at 7am we head down to the coffee bar. A few minutes later a gentleman sits down next to us and says hello. This is how it goes… Richard is 90 years old, born in 1928. He looks about 65. He is cruising to the Hawaiian Islands and South Pacific by himself, having lost his wife of 68 years, 6 years ago. He just came back from the gym where he was lifting weights. Richard: Yes, ... read more

Dateline: Tuesday, October 23, 2018- San Pedro Harbor, Los Angeles, California 3:30pm, lifeboat drill. Important to note that we will not see or touch a lifeboat during this drill, neither will we put on or touch a life jacket. The 300 or so of us assigned to Muster Station D will however, go to Deck 7, the Explorers Lounge and find a comfy chair to await instructions. On the stage, our drill instructor is a funny and lovely ship’s officer from Chile. She tells us that staff will be coming around to scan our cruise cards to make sure that everyone shows up for this important briefing from the Captain. She tells us every few minutes that the Captain will be addressing us shortly on the Emergency Broadcast System on the ship. We wait, we wait. ... read more

Good Morning Everyone and welcome to fall. We're almost ready to leave on another adventure. We have flown over the islands of the South Pacific many times but...never set foot on one. So on October 23rd, we'll drive to Los Angeles, leave our car in Marina del Rey and Lyft down to the port in San Pedro where we will board the Emerald Princess for parts west and south. We'll blog along the way as we explore some places we've been before like, Kauai, Maui, Hawaii and Oahu... and make new friends in Pago Pago, American Samoa... Apia, Samoa... Moorea... Bora Bora and Tahiti. Hope you'll come along as we love getting your questions and comments. Jean and Cope... read more

San Juan Puerto Rico They should put up a “Welcome Back, Jean and Cope” sign here. We have been to Puerto Rico many times and love this island. It has been sad to see the slow response to their needs after Hurricane Maria from the United States, but…despite this they are coming back beautiful and amazing as ever. Today we have booked a food walking tour (we were worried we wouldn’t have enough food on the ship, LOL), of Old Town San Juan through Tours by Locals. Jorge Montalvo is to meet us on the dock. What luck that we reached out to Jorge. He was the best guide ever! Personable, sense of humor, educated, perfect English and knows a lot about history. His Facebook page is @eltourguidePR if you’re heading his way. After meeting up ... read more

Puerto Plata not Cap Cana, Dominican Republic So today is Cap Cana, Dominican Republic…er…maybe not. We have been told the weather is a problem at Cap Cana and we would not be able to tender everyone in, too rough, so… we’ll be going instead to Amber Cove, Puerto Plata, a UNESCO World Heritage Center, on the northern shore of the Dominican Republic. Fine by us. We have not been to the Dominican Republic and are looking forward to it, no matter the location. Today is intermittent rain and hot sunshine. Normal. The port areas of Amber Cove are like many in the Caribbean nowadays. It is developed for the cruise ship passengers…clean, safe and a place to spend your money. But, for us, we want to see the countryside, the town and talk to the people. ... read more

Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Huge, soft lips caress my outstretched hand as the scruffy pregnant donkey, snuffles up a piece of granola bar. Yep, there are hundreds of these gentle creatures wandering around Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos. We are on a tram tour of the island and have a chance to pet and feed a group of 8 who have wandered over to check us out, as we explore this very flat 7 mile by 1 ½ mile island. The donkeys will eat whatever we have with us including drinking water from our bottles. I've convinced Cope to give up his Granola Bars for the donkeys ;-) There are people on the tram that can't wait to feed and pet them (me) and then others that are saying, "Don't touch those creatures, ... read more

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas White, white, white, clean powdery sand in a crescent moon shape with palm trees ringing the beach. The sky is deep blue, the waters warm and turquoise. The perfect Caribbean island right out of Robinson Crusoe. We are spending the day in a fairy tale. The beaches are groomed, there are young, strong lifeguards every 400 feet, and our clamshell cabana awaits us. This island is owned and operated by Carnival Cruise Lines which also owns the Veendam, our Holland American ship. We settle in spreading our towels on the lounge chairs, shed our beach cover ups and head for a walk to the far reaches of the beach. As the small waves lap at the shore, our feet hit what seems like cold water, but that’s just because we are so ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Fort Lauderdale April 19th 2018

Back in Ft. Lauderdale we drop off cruise passengers and pick up another bunch for week 2 of our back-to-back cruise. We take advantage of this layover to head out for an air boat tour in the Everglades. Something we haven’t done and sounds fun. We board a bus and travel west for about 30 minutes across Florida. There are huge puffy rain laden clouds on the horizon and we heard that there was a terrible storm last night and a tornado even touched down. But…today has dawned bright and clear with stiff breezes and the Everglades were refreshed with 2 inches of rain. For those of you who might not know, an air boat is a flat bottomed boat with an airplane propeller mounted vertically in the back and driven by a large, loud V8 ... read more

Havana, Cuba People to People Cars, Art, Canons and Cemeteries Finally, the heart of our cruise, Havana, Cuba. This has been on the bucket list for years. Cuba, so very close, 90 miles to Key West, Florida, and yet unreachable for most Americans. Visa’s and passports in hand we disembark in Old Town Havana. We head down the gangway to the terminal where we go first through a metal detector just like at the airport, then down another hall where we line up in front of a half dozen, small immigration and customs stations. One person at a time, we step forward until it is our turn. Cope goes first. I can’t see the officer as the glass is frosted, but I see Cope, who is seriously answering questions from the officer. I see his passport ... read more
