What a grand adventure! It's great to be able to share it with you via your writings. And the pictures of the boys are something you will treasure always, whether the background pics have been done before or not. Remember, even though others have had a similar experience and have written about it perhaps more elegantly than you imagine you can, this time it is your experience. Reading about it is nothing like actually being there...
San Marco YAY! I'm glad you went in, awesome to have a local as expert and guide, too. I don't think anything can prepare one for the shimmer of those mosaics, that massive space, those millions of glittering tesserae. Pictures, words, it all falls short. But the impression remains. I want to go back!
Yes! Take any dang picture you want! Write up your impressions with the awe that accompanies them. So what if others have been similarly impressed and have expressed themselves with distinction? It's not a contest. . . These are yours, from YOUR time there with your boys; they will treasure them -- now and later.
And we who are following along treasure your impressions -- verbal and visual -- because they are yours. Not because they're Woolfian or Jamesian or Byronic or Twains-y or Mann-ish. . . but because you're seeing Venice and letting all that mystique and madness work on you as it will. It's Venice, after all. Don't get in your own way, sister dear. It's OK to be impressed. . .
Thanks Marian Thanks, Marian for your comments! I will certainly stop by the store. I am looking for opportunities to meet more Venetians, though my Italian is very limited at this point.
memories No matter how many canals or how many views the memories will come flooding back. This is the wonderful aspect of your travel blog. It will also be wonderful for the boys to look back and say[ We saw this I remember what we were doing when we were there]. Keep it up. I miss all of you so much.
Oh by the way.. I am a friend/former colleague of Elizabeth Louros and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog posts and leaving comments.
Please do drop by Roberto's store if for no other reason than to say hi!
Be well... happy exploring.
Yes, but Yes, but as you said these are YOUR memories, impressions and photos.
Besides even if I've seen them a million time, I'm enjoying reading about your experiences and seeing pictures of the city where I fell in love and got married.
No surf there, huh?? It is so much fun to read about your experiences. They are so totally different than mine both when I was staying there when I met my husband and just before I got married, to the various times I have visited since then.
Don't miss a trip to the "outer" islands!!
update An article ran in the paper: "Corpse in the Lagoon". The victim was a male, 47 years of age, resident of the Lido. A possible suicide. There was a note in the paper about the residents of nearby residences watching the unfolding events. We joked blackly: "We made the papers."
Call me obsessed, but I look forward to your daily blogs. I hope you keep it going. I love your boys' joie de vie (is that right?) attitude about their adventure. So worldly. Hugs to the whole family.
keep em comming I am enjoying your narratives. The kids seem to be doing wonderfully. I love the comments. They seem to be happy with everything. You prepped them well.
Beautiful story. Funny you mentioned your fears about birds & diseases. When I showed Eric these pics of the boys & the pigeons( pre-blog), he said, "You would never let the kids do that." Is it b/c I don't even let my children play with found feathers on the beach? I too have some weird, unsubstantiated fears about birds. Funny. I wonder where we get that?
I'm so glad my future in-laws are having a great time in Italy. The whole family is enjoying the pics, and the mom is thoroughly enjoying the blog. Keep having a blast.
I'm a teacher on leave, living in Venice with my husband and two kids. Husband is a prof. at Wake Forest U, which owns a house on the Grand Canal where a semester abroad program takes place.... full info
