Today, because it was so special, I've included a large number of photos. Hopefully everyone will enjoy them and feel some of the joy we felt being able to do this safari her in Sri Lanka. Udawalawae National Park was originally created to provide a habitat for animals that were displaced when the Walawae River was dammed. It was created in the early 1970's and is about 300sq km in area. It is a very important habitat for both water birds and Sri Lankan elephants. In addition to the park there is an elephant transit facility for the rehabilitation of orphaned baby elephants to ultimately release them back into their natural habitat. The baby/young elephants are raised here for five years then returned to the park where they are, presumably, accepted into the herd (to be ... read more

No sleep in today as Marie, Chris and I are off to conquer Little Adams Peak. Taking Marie a good idea as insurance against another navigational issue. Set off at 6.30am and sun just rising but the valley full of cloud. We're above the cloud and can look straight across it to LAP, a spectacular view. The walk takes us down the hill to town then up the other side on the road before it branches off on a small track. Easy to see how McVet got lost yesterday as signage is pretty minimal and for some strange reason largely orientated away from the direction you are going?! The "climb" (sounds better than "walk") finishes with a few flights of stairs to ensure we all arrive suitable puffed. The view from the top was spectacular, 360deg ... read more

One of the attractions of Ella is Little Adams Peak. Adams Peak (the real one) is famous throughout Sri Lanka both as a holy site for pilgrims and also a hike for tourists to watch the sunrise. Well Little Adams Peak (LAP) is a lot shorter but great views from the top at sunrise. So why am I telling you this, well, to prove he doesn't need me to get lost, Chris set off to walk it this morning. He did this believing I'd run it as I was planning to do, unaware I'd decided a sleep in was order of the day. Just before breakfast he arrived back, hot and tired. Seems he had missed the turn off and carried on along the main road towards Colombo. Luckily a caring tuk tuk driver stopped and ... read more

Today is the second half of the Great Train Journey, this time from Nurawa Eliya to Ela, But before get ahead of ourselves, the morning. Up early and decided to go for a run to the lake that is just out of town here but seems to be quite a local attraction. Uneventful until I got to the lake where I picked up a stray dog who proceeded to follow me all the way back to the guesthouse, probably 3.5km, running alongside me as if he was trained. Locals, including the police, who were out of force for some reason, all found this pretty amusing. I found myself plotting how I could smuggle a sausage out of breakfast to feed her Then as the effects of heat and running took hold started plotting on paying the ... read more

Full cooked breakfast cooked by our own personal chef and served by the trusty staff, you could get use to this, although again the standing watching us eat was a bit awkward. Decided to walk into town and have a look around then get tuk tuks to a tea plantation about 4km out of town. Tea plantation was fascinating, tour of the factory was another step back in time. All the machinery looked like it arrived with the raj. They were not operating as its was a Sunday and also most of the production occurs at night. Ladies pick up to 18kg per day and this particular plantation had about 400 pickers. Donna still not too flash so she had an afternoon off while Chris, Marie and I went to the Grand Hotel for high tea. ... read more

Woke to rainy, misty morning but excitement was palpable as today we are off on a train to Nurawa Eliya. This train journey is the first half of the trip to Ela which is claimed to be one of the top ten rail experiences in the world. So breakfast, this time with more brownie which the lady who runs guesthouse is a recipe from the Edmonds cook book. Another New Zealand guest gave her a copy a few years ago! Off to rail station in two tuk tuks. Station bustling and noticeably more tourists. The train was quite late but no one seemed at all concerned, it is just part of the experience. Once on board confusion abounds regarding seating, a family in our seats who we evicted then we swapped with some others to get ... read more

Up early and a run around the lake, great seeing the town as it awakens and gets ready for another day. A lot of school children on their way to school (7.00am so school day must start early)and busses and other traffic gridlocked around the lake front. Came across Chris who was out having a walk. Breakfast in the guest house was good and included small rolled up pancakes with a coconut, caramelised sugar and cardamom paste inside. Really tasty and refreshing. One thing that was a bit off putting was the staff standing around watching and trying a little too hard to please, we understand they are doing there best and probably in the Sri Lankan culture it is ok but we found it uncomfortable. The lady who owns the guest house (and I would ... read more

Up early and leave at 6.30am to climb Lion Rock. Marie and Donna decided to stay at the bottom and look at the ruins and gardens there while Chris and I went to the top. A great walk up, mix of stone stairs, steel stairs hanging off sheer faces, a couple of spiral staircases. On the way up you pass through an area with a rock overhang and the back wall has the remain of a number of ancient paintings. The top was spectacular, 360deg views and because we were so early and made good time up there was only a handful of people there. Even managed to spot the girls down on the flat! After a quick look around the museum returned to hotel and breakfast and into another van for a ride to Kandy. ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Central Province » Sigiriya September 6th 2017

Decided to move on from Anuradhapura and go to Sigiriya given the "resort"was not really doing it for us and we'd exhausted the tourist highlights. Got a van and this time driver and co-driver, both looked a like Sri Lankan wide boys complete with bling, tats and a big as amp and subwoofer in the back of the van. Interesting journey, as we left Anuradhapura stopped at a roadside alter and the made a donation/offering for a safe trip, then duly blessed drove like crazy. We did come to a quick halt at one stage when a lizard walked in front of the van and waited for the lizard to make his/her leisurely way across the road. Although there was little concern for human life or potential injury apparently killing animals is a big no no. ... read more

Up and after breakfast waiting for the van we organised the night before to arrive. Donna remarked "wouldn't it be funny if the van turned out to be the same guy who brought us from the train station". A little after the designated time who turns up to take us on our tour but the train station guy. We climb in and head off on our tour. The guy telling us the original driver couldn't make it but they'd arranged for him to fill in. The first indication that all was not well was when Chris received a call from the Little Paradise man saying our van and driver were two minutes away. Hmmm so we're effectively being kidnaped! Asked the driver to stop and then put him on the phone to the NP guy and ... read more
