The travel bug has bitten me, and what better way to experience other cultures than to experience what tangibly defines them -- their cuisine.
This blog is dedicated to the food I experience while living and working abroad.
Food culture is something that is painfully absent in almost all English-speaking countries. If you've never traveled abroad, you might be thinking,
What's the big deal? Shove it down your gullet and move on with life!At least that's what I used to think.
I used to turn my nose up at foods with names I couldn't pronounce. I used to consider anything other than the main course to be superfluous. Cheese and ketchup made anything ten times more delicious. I wouldn't eat anything spicy. And forget about anything raw.
Now, thanks to the persistence of foreign girlfriends and housemates from far and wide, I have had the pleasure of eating foods that many people don't even know exist. I now try anything once. If I can't recognize the ingredients by looking at it, I'll probably enjoy it. The rawer the better. If there are more dishes than I have fingers, it's a good day. And most of all, if I am in the company of wonderful friends, the meal will be proportionally delicious.
These are some of my culinary experiences abroad. Welcome to Asia's culture within a culture -- that of good eating.
