We're going to Romania

Europe » Romania July 28th 2008

Well, this is our last day here in Hunedoara. We leave pretty soon for Oradea to pick up Chris who left yesterday to visit some of his family. He was born here in Romania and was adopted at 14 mo. by an American family. After that we will be going to Budapest, where we will be doing a little more sightseeing and then we catch a flight the next morning at 6:30. We all have enjoyed it so much here and it will be sad to leave but we are looking forward to coming home and seeing our families and friends again. Yesterday, we went and visited the second children's home. This home is located outside of Hunedoara in a tiny little village that I don't remember the name of. We went to church there first. ... read more

When we started with the Spa ministry, I really struggled with it. I have a background in Mary Kay so I have no trouble at all with the spa aspect, in fact it did seem like a perfect fit. The trouble that I had was that I saw the people who live without heat in an area that reaches 10 below and families sending one parent away to find work while the other stays behind with the kids. Painting nails seemed shallow and pointless in the face of the poverty here. I felt more useful when we were picking up trash in the streets. But I came here willing to do whatever asked, so here I am. What I learned was that this ministry touches the women and girls here on different levels. The women lead ... read more

O.k. here I am again. It's been a few days since I've written on our travelblog, but I am glad that others have been able to. It seems that whenever we get a chance to be on the computers I am just too tired to be able to write (type & think). Part of it is probably all the go - go -go and when I stop, I wilt. We have been having such a wonderful time here. The Salt & Light Campaign is starting to wind down. We only have the remainder of today and tomorrow left. It will be sad when we are done with this aspect of the trip. There are many that we have gotten to know over this time period that we probably won't be seeing again until maybe next year. ... read more

Hello, all! First off, I would like to say that we miss you all very much. We are blatantly reminded of home today for here in Hunedoara, it is a cold, rainy day. As much as we miss home, we are also realizing how very hard it will be to leave. We are only a week and a few days into our trip, and yet we are getting to know and love everybody here. Yesterday was the first day of the Salt and Light Festival. We arrived at the Centre at about 9:30-10:00 a.m., and we immediatly got to work. We started out the day joining the Switzerland team and the Indiana team cleaning the streets and evangelizing to the bystanders. We also handed out flyers for the Salt and Light Festival. It was very cute...when ... read more

Yesterday we were teamed up with the California team to help with the sewing, I was really excited because I now have been quilting and the first project is a quilt. Ann and the girls weren't thrilled though. We were waiting to get started when they told us that we were more needed in the spa ministry. They didn't have a team organized for it. The girls were thrilled, but Ann wasn't. We started doing facials and manicures and Ann was disappointed because she felt out of place. Throughout the day she was taking pictures (for those of you that don't know Ann, she is a very good photographer and has a really nice camera). When VBS was finished, Ann walked out the door and was absolutely swarmed by children. The kids LOVE having their picture ... read more

We arrived this morning to start our first day of the campaign. They put us on the clean-up crew with a group from Switzerland and a group from Indiana. It has been a great blessing to work with groups from all over. We started in the "forest" which was an empty lot and cleaned our way down the street and partway up the next. Groups of evangelists followed us. People were very curious about what we were doing and that gave the evangelists a chance to talk to them. We were very thankful to be done and for the cold water provided at the church, tomorrow we will remember to bring water with us! ... read more

As most of you know, one of the reasons we traveled to Romania was to visit the orphanage that my Uncle Matt is involved with. I have since decided that orphanage is not really the correct description. Maybe foster families is better. Their are two different families, each with Romanian house parents. The first family, in Huneodora, have one boy of their own and then 5 other boys and 3 girls. We have spent a lot of time with this family and it is wonderful to see how happy they all are. They range in age from 7 yrs. old to 19 yrs. old. They all get along splendidly, are very well mannered, and love to play with everyone. We have played ping-pong. ball, badminton, uno, yahtzee, & soccer (at least the boys) with them.... read more

Hi, this is Ruth. The campaign that we are helping with is organized by Bethlehem Center. The center is in one of the poorest districts in Huneodora. The center started by providing bible studies to the neighborhood including kids. Some of the kids couldn't read or write so the center added a homework assistance program. Many of those kids were so hungry that they couldn't concentrate during the lessons, so the center added a hot meal program. Well some of the kids smelled so bad that the other kids wouldn't sit by them, so the center added a shower and laundry service for these kids. You can see that as the programs grow, so do the needs. The center has also added a computer training program, and a Sunday service. They have even added sewing courses ... read more
