Trip toTurin, via Milan, went well yesterday. Stayed across from the Porta Susa train station in Turin last night in a B&B that was in a classic building. The room had 15 ft ceilings and it is the only place we've ever stayed that you needed 5 keys to get in the building and to your room. What we didn't have was a functioning internet connection so you didn't get your daily dose of "Where's Gee?" The train trip across northern Italy was very nice. The scenery ranged from mountains to lakes with lots of agriculture. Very neat and green. Had a short stop in Milan's central station - may get back there someday soon! Got up early today to get the train from Turin to Annecy, France. Within 10 minutes of leaving Turin you see ... read more

The rain arrived but didn't dampen our enjoyment of Venice. Today we enjoyed indoor adventures. Rather close to our "flat" was the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari - a church built by the Franciscan and dedicated in 1492! It is still a church but contains many of Venice's most famous works of art. Went early and almost had it to ourselves. Besides the paintings and sculptures there were some amazing carved pieces and even a 16th century clockworks. Couldn't leave Italy without having pizza - it was complemented with grilled sardines and onions soaked in olive oil and deep fried zucchini blossoms. Ben will appreciate someone else who has eaten in this restaurant. Did some exploring in the rain looking for bookstores and bakeries. Also did some house keeping and laundry as we prepare ... read more

Spent the day visiting two other islands in the Venetian lagoon - Burano and Murano. Where many European cities have extensive bus/subway public transport services - Venice has boats. The network is extensive and considering how many people they need to service - very effective. First stop was Burano, known for its fine lace making and very colorful houses. Not too big and not too crowded and a great excuse to have a cappuccino and "Burano bussola (biscuit)". It takes about an hour to cross the lagoon to Burano - we said they were efficient, no fast! Next stop was Murano, know for its glassworks. Very quaint island but a bit more crowded as is only 10 min. from Venice proper. Gee found a very nice osteria with a great outdoor garden and very local feel. ... read more

Busy day in Venice - spent 6 hrs walking and 2 on a boat. Roaming through the endless maze of "streets" - some only 3 ft wide- has been delightful. It is easy to get lost, but the fun is in the search. Some highlights: The Rialto bridge is one of the 4 bridges over the Grand Canal and near it is the site of a Saturday morning fish market and the amount and variety was amazing. Everything fresh from the boats. Watched one fellow clean live eels! A Venetian tradition is an Italian version of tapas called cicchetti. Walk-up bars offer small, usually open-faced "sandwiches" with a wide range of toppings beginning late morning and each one is about 1euro. You can also get a very small glass of wine also for a euro - ... read more

One more step on this path has been completed and we are in Venice. It will be impossible to describe and though we will take far too many pictures, none of them will do justice to this city. Unique is an understatement. We've logged quite a few miles already and will share a few photos with you. The ones "titled" as 4-**** are within 150 yards of the apartment that will be home for 4 days. The others might give you a flavor of Venice. Some streets crazy busy, but take a few steps from them and it is tranquil and beautiful. Fingers crossed the good weather holds for a couple of days.... read more

Another beautiful day in the Netherlands. Left Haarlem this morning and took the bus back to Schiphol (the Amsterdam airport) since our flight to Venice tomorrow morning leaves pretty early. That allowed a chance to spend some time today in Amsterdam. Took the train from the airport to City Center and back. For the one bus and two train trips today we had to wait a total of 6 minutes and each departed right on time. With so many people concentrated in such a small country they need a very efficient public transport system and they have surely figured it out. The city center train station in Amsterdam is crazy hectic but once you walk for 5 minutes into the surrounding neighborhood it is quiet and enchanting. Found a great little fish wall-up for a very ... read more

Today we were fortunate to have a beautiful, mostly sunny day and so took the opportunity today to relive some our favorite experiences from our stay here 10 years ago. We took our map of Haarlem and went on our own self-guided tour to locate some of the "secret" hofje (alms houses built in the 1500's and 1600's to provide housing for the poor. Even then the Dutch had a solution for the homeless. The we hiked to a park that had the reputation for the best pannenkoeken in town. Found some great apple fritters to complement afternoon coffee and had cheese and bread with Dutch beer for our pre-dinner "snack". Fortunately we had a modest bowl of soup for dinner - which we then topped of with gelato. It is a real good thing that ... read more

KLM treated us very well. 10+ hour flight with good food, not much turbulence, lots of movies and an empty seat next to us. A two minute walk from customs to a bus that was waiting for us. A 20 min. bus ride on a road that only carries buses and has the intersection lights controlled so the bus doesn't stop. Dutch green pea soup for dinner on a chilly evening. Haarlem is like a mini Amsterdam. Neat, quaint but not crowded. Now to get some rest in our cute "little" hotel (a 3 room hotel) and explore a bit tomorrow.... read more
