Praying Before the Abbot

how fortunate I am
How fortunate indeed Per-Olof...how fortunate indeed. How perceived you can appear to those out to take the tourist buck and how perceived you can appear when they see you respecting their culture. Enjoyed your insights and pics in this blog.

Wat Pho

Fabulous panorama!
So glad you're back to the Land of Smiles from today's fine lunch mates, great temples, yesterday's Buddhist ceremony and a great massage. Very tricky remaining centered when it seems people just want to scam you. Glad you found the smiles again.

Wat Pho

Fabulous panorama!
Thank you Tara =) Yes, it felt far better towards the late afternoon and then on the second day in Thailand but I certainly needed that reboot that the temple offered me. =)

It sounds so familiar ...
Your experience in Bangkok with the - 'Palace is closed for prayers' - sounds almost exactly like ours except that we were told that it was closed until 1.00pm for Bhudha's Birthday. We were well and truly scammed too even though we also like to think that we are awake to most scams! I guess with traveling we just have to take the good with the bad. Happy travels. Regards, Tracey.

Indeed, the bad with the good and travel has an abundance of good. Even so, it does annoy me with things like this. But, it could be far worse =)

Ching Shu Hin

Jackpot
Sounds as if you found the trail to find many gems...and some without other tourists! Kinda shows how many temples there must be in China but there are many mountains that are covered by them!

Haha, yes indeed my dancing friend! There are no shortage of temples in China. =) I was in general very fortunate on this trip to not have to rub elbows with two many tourists!

Two of many things the Chinese are good at...statues and drinking tea!

Tian Tan Buddha

Po Lin & Tian Tan
Having traveled in 16 provinces in China I'm pretty skilled at avoiding crowds...but sounds as if for this place its pretty impossible. Certainly tests the enjoyment button for me...so well done as you sound as if you felt the queues were worthwhile. A tip- the taxi drivers will know that one quoted you 400HKD and there is pressure on them to conform to that price. If you go to the end of the line offering your much much reduced price, I find one usually breaks rank to score the fare. Sounds like in your case walking was definitely the way to go.

That's a good tip my friend. :-) Well if nothing else I needed the exercise. I can feel my suit getting tight around the midriff. :-)

Retirement!

Love these shoes!
I had a similar pair of boots that I wore all through snowy, rainy Patagonia. Good luck on your new ones fitting you comfortably soon. Congrats on being a wise, short-term traveler and going for the plane, which is the perfect option for those with less time and more money. Excellent--you got to Bangkok on the day you'd planned (and eventually more money will appear). Hope you don't get touted out.

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

Great adventure!
How fab that you're exploring Chinese culture! I imagine that you saw few Westerners because most are out shopping. And yeah, you're right about the creepy/scary statues--yikes!

Great contrasts in the Buddha and lights of the city.
Pretty surprising the prices and queues--I'm with you--hike on down. Your panoramas on this and your last blog have been incredible!

Thank you Tara! :) Yeah the lines was just insane, I think it probably went faster walking down, and with the nice weather and solitude it was awesome!

HK...China's doorstep
Hope you have a fabulous time in Hong Kong Per-Olof. Are you also venturing further into China? Is this your first trip to the Middle Kingdom?

HK...China's doorstep
I had a great time in HK! It was indeed my first time to China but this time I didn't go further into Chine but down south to Singapore and then onto Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. :)
