Our final port of call was Key West – a lovely place that’s the southern most part of the States. As we were entering U.S. territory, the “aliens” had to go through customs again which seemed to me rather stupid, as we wouldn’t have been on the ship unless we’d gone through customs to begin with. Key West reminded me of New Orleans with its houses, very quaint with all their Christmas decorations still up and lovely weather. I could live in Key West, even though its quite a small island. I'd prebooked a bike tour for the morning, so purposely missed the pub crawl that was also organised for the group. I would liked to have gone to a few of these 4-5 pubs, but just couldn't handle a day of boozing again. Would you ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas December 31st 2010

The following day was New Year's Eve and we had a day at sea. This was the most relaxing day I had the entire time so I really enjoyed it, just getting my nose into a book and having some downtime. Finally the weather was warming up to be comfortable, so some sunbathing too. In the evening, it was the usual sunset drinking saga, only this time followed by everyone on the entire ship on deck just before midnight to celebrate New Years. This was a blacktie event so everyone got dressed up to the nines and looked great. Men in black tie are so suave. Must say was quite surprised the ship didn't lay on balloons or streamers or something for the passengers to see the New Year in. There was a rumour that there ... read more

By 5.00 pm we'd left Nassau and set sail for Coco Cay, a private Island owned by the shipping line. The ship can't dock there so you catch a tender across to the Island, where they've also set up lunch and there's a very small market. When the ship leaves, everyone on the island leaves except the caretaker. I suppose the trouble is, I live in a country with really excellent beaches - this one was a stony beach with very shallow water for a very long way out, so shallow you can’t swim in it - so trying to walk into deep water its Ouch, Ouch, Ouch before you’re even waste deep. It was also dangerous as we saw a few stingrays in the shallows we were walking in – would have been so easy ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas » Nassau » Bahamas December 30th 2010

The following day, our first port of call was Nassau, the Bahamas. I was still waking up at 4.00 in the morning, so actually saw sunrise and sailing into Nassau. I was expecting something exotic to be honest, even the name is exotic. However, it lacked the “Wow Factor” as its very poor one side of the river, and very rich the other side with some truly beautiful houses. The Town is small and quite dingy and everyone seems to live on subsistence. I'd booked a snorkelling tour off a catamaran in the morning which I thought would have been great underwater viewing – even that was disappointing as the sea bed was a dirty brown, hardly any corral worth mentioning, although there were some beautiful fish. Unfortunately, due to the weather still not being really ... read more

The Singles Group all got together for a cocktail party before dinner in order to meet everyone (120 of us with some people missing the cruise due to being snowed in) and essentially the boozing continued throughout the entire 5 day cruise. If it wasn’t Pub Crawls at one of the ports we called into, then it was sundowners when the ship left, followed by pre-dinner drinks, plus drinks at dinner and getting together at a bar/disco afterwards for you guessed it, more drinks. I would hate to have been a recovering alcoholic on this cruise. Now I don't mind a drink, but I’m also not used to so much drinking 24/7 and after a couple of days of trying to keep up with everyone, I was drunk-out so to speak and couldn’t handle another Mi ... read more

Finally the day of boarding the ship arrived and we all got onboard at 12.00 noon. The Celebrity Century was a beautiful ship and Miami is a pretty place, so to sail out of there at 5.00 p.m. was great. Like most cruises, they had an automatic gratuities being taken out of your onboard account - over 5 days this can amount to over $150 so its always a good idea on the first day to go to the Pursors Desk and cancel that. It's not compulsory, and personally I prefer to tip whichever person gives me really good service. A hint re. cruises - tip your Cabinboy on the first day rather than the last, as you'll get better service. ... read more

After another 3 hour flight, I finally arrived into Miami early afternoon, gaining another 5 hours on my day, so found adjusting to Miami’s time the hardest as I hadn’t quite caught up with Honolulu’s yet. Consequently, it took me about 3 days before I finally got into their time and stopped waking up at 3.00 in the morning. In Miami I was joining my first American Singles Cruise over the New Year who also matched you with a cabinmate (hence cutting the cost of the cruise), and they suggested arriving a couple of days beforehand to meet everyone and to ensure you didn't miss the boat. They booked the Avalon Hotel in South Beach for everyone (one buzzy neighbourhood) with the Beach just across the road, and miles and miles of restaurants. Meet and greet ... read more

For a cheapish Hotel right on Waikiki, I recommend the Aston Waikiki Circle (cheapest room is city view) - no pool but rooms are clean and comfortable (res.CIR@astonhotels.com). 3rd day (Boxing Day) I flew off to Miami via Chicago – another 8 hour red-eye flight, more pins and needles, and arrived into Chicago at 5.00 in the morning with snow on the ground and absolutely freezing. Hadn’t packed any winter clothes so had to buy a blanket on the plane - yes buy, as on internal U.S. flights nothing is free, including headsets. Even your suitcase will cost you $25 to have it checked-in. Had 4 hours to waste to connect to Miami and was dying to go to sleep, but concerned I’d miss my connecting flight, so I found out the Gate No. it was ... read more

You'll find a lot of photos in this entire travel blog as my ultimate hobby is photography and I'm a definite believer in "a picture is worth a thousand words". Normally at Christmas I'd go to a Travel Agency and tell them what I want to do, but this year I booked everything online myself and started researching my trip in August, for a December departure. It all started with the idea of maybe I'd take a cruise out of the States around the Caribbean, which I'd never seen before. I also thought that booking everything early would also give me cheap fares. As I have a friend in Las Vegas, I thought whilst I'm there I may as well pop up to see her also, but trying to book one way flights from Sydney/Miami/Las Vegas/Sydney ... read more
