Friday October 3rd We were met this morning by Amrit from Nepali Cooking Course http://www.nepalicookingcourse.com/ I'd been looking forward to today for months after searching for a good cooking class in Kathmandu and finding his course on Tripadvisor. We try and do a cooking class in every country we visit as not only are they fun but we normally learn some great tips and tricks and we love the interaction with the locals running them! We walked to the local 'old' market and along the way picked up another 2 small groups of girls who we'd be spending the morning with. There is something about local food markets that I just love. The variety of beautiful, fresh produce always amazes me! This one was no exception. Set in the dusty streets alongside temples and gorgeous old ... read more

Finally after a 4 month countdown we have arrived in Kathmandu at the beginning of our months holiday. We'll be spending 2 weeks here in Nepal including a trek in the Annapurnas, then Gav will head home leaving Mia and I for a girls holiday for 16 days in Singapore. Mia and I arrived on Tuesday afternoon and after a 2 hour wait at Kathmandu airport we finally met Gav who had flown in from Thailand. For me it was so good to be back here after 15 years - nothing has changed which I love. For Mia it was a bit of a culture shock. Even though she is an experienced traveller in Asian countries, arriving in Kathmandu (and being very tired from travelling for 20+ hours) it was quite overwhelming for her. I'm sure ... read more

Wednesday 27th March, 2013 Finally today we were heading out to the burbs of Bangkok to do the first of two planned cooking sessions with Angsana at 'Thai Private Home Cooking'. I'd found it on Tripadvisor and after many emails back and forth between Angsana and I, we'd come up with two menus to cook over two sessions - today and then another one in April after returning from Koh Phangan. We took a taxi from Nouvo Hotel where we staying (near Khao San Rd) to Rachethewi train station and then the 45 min train trip to On-Nut station. We had arranged to meet Angsana across the road outside McDonalds before she took us to the local market before starting our cooking. Whilst waiting we found a local little street-side coffee stall where we ordered a ... read more

Well after two great first days in Bangkok we headed off to another cooking school that I had booked over the interent before leaving home. 'May Kaidee's' is a vegan cooking school so I thought it would be a good chance to do something a bit different from the norm. Two of the dishes I had read that you make were pumpkin humus and Isaan style vegetables. I was really interested in these as I love Isaan food (from north east Thailand) and the humus sounded yum! We walked across the road to the school/restaurant only to be told the class was now at 2pm not 1pm and that it had moved locations! They asked whether we had booked online (yes) and received a confirmation (no). I explained that I had sent numerous emails to them ... read more

Hi all, Well again I am well behind in my blogs, but suppose that means we are doing the right thing by relaxing... Below are lots of photos taken from when Mia and I spent the day (Sunday 24th March) with Bangkok Food Tours and their 'offbeat floating market' tour. A great and long day out visiting the famous train market and 3 floating markets. The train market is set up along the railway and 8 times a day a train passes through. Each time it does the vendors have to pull aside the food and pull down their shade screens so that the train can pass. As soon as it has passed each stall, the vendor pops the shade screen back up and the produce is slid back into place. It's quite funny to watch! ... read more

Hi everyone! It's only taken me two weeks to start blogging...we've been very busy cooking, eating and relaxing with limited wifi access... We finally arrived in Koh Phangan yesterday afternoon and have all just gone 'ahhh, this is what it's all about'. Mia and I had a great time together in Bangkok the first week (which this blog will start to cover) and then we met up with Gav (who had 3 near death experiences in Nepal mountain climbing before he finally arrived in Bangkok safe and sound but around 2 stone lighter and literally wasted away inc frostbite). We headed down to Ko Lanta for a days but were underwhelmed and then went to Phi Phi where again we were pretty happy to leave as fast as we could...but more on that later. Friday 22nd ... read more
