Day 16: Stein am Rhein Switzerland: 65km weather - great, sunny with wind in the right direction. Up early again and grabbed chocolate milk in the local grocery. Today was our most challenging of riding yet in terms of hills. Pretty tough with the loaded trike but we are definitely getting much stronger. We saw incredible sights today and rode in and out of Switzerland to Germany three times. We ended up in Switzerland. We found the campground and setup and walked back to town (15 minutes) to have supper at a lovely little place on the Rhein. We happily sat below the Castle and enjoyed an incredible meal. We then walked back to the campsite and realized as walking up to our tent that Denis had not picked up the knapsack! Total panic set in ... read more

Day 15: Mohlin to On the road by 8:00 and stopped in a lovely place with a Castle for coffee & Blackforest cake... definitely the best I've ever had. We ran into the French family again and discovered we were travelling the same way. Great day of riding with so many beautiful sights. The most amazing was the huge wooden covered bridge from Germany to Switzerland. Again Denis was in one country while I was in the other.... read more

Day 14: Mohlin - bike repairs. We got up packed all but the tent & headed to the bike shop with the trike. The owner was in Frankfurt for a meeting & the other shop was closed. We decided to drop the trike at our campsite & take the bus to Rheinfelden (6km). We noticed a family from Holland had a swag vehicle and thought we'd ask for a drive instead. This was no problem as "Martin" was going to Rheinfelden anyway. He drove us, we dropped the wheel off, the fellow fixed it and we enjoyed the town. Had a great lunch and grabbed the bus back which dropped us right at the campsite. We hit the swimming pool as it was really hot and then rode into town to grab wine and a light ... read more

Day 13: Huningue to Mohlin Switzerland- Prior to leaving the area we headed into Basal which was again more amazing than the last town. It is a big city and very cosmopolitan mixed with the old. The train system is amazing and it borders the three countries and so there is a wide variety of languages heard. The train system is something else and I would have loved to have traveled around a little on transit just for fun. Most remarkable was when we rolled into the downtown a girl immediately came and asked, what our 'project' was. I responded we were just touring, she then offered us a place to stay if wanted and gave us her info if we needed anything. Iris was just lovely and we have to say that it really cheered ... read more

Day 11: Mulhouse to Huningue (near Basal Switzerland). We pedaled a long day in the wind getting lost several times again with sprinkling rain on and off all day. Before leaving Mulhouse we headed to the historical section. It was Sunday morning and there was barely anyone around. It was absolutely beautiful with the buildings all painted up and the town kept pristine. Each place we visit is more lovely than the last. I am pinching myself for all we are seeing! We stopped at the train station prior to leaving where poor Denis has to return to collect 50 cents to use the facilities. It is so odd to have to pay to use the washroom. We had some pretty good paths, especially along the canal and enjoyed the day. Also along the route we ... read more

Up pretty early and picked up the electronics from the office. All charged up and ready to go. The owners were also Tandem Cyclists and were very interested in the trike, thus before we headed out we offered them a spin. They returned with smiling faces! Weather - very windy and threatening rain as leaving Neuf-Brisach. Sprinkled on and off throughout the day. Lost several times, really poorly marked trails, especially any time we were near a town. Everything was closed due to the holiday but fortunately we had food to picnic on and found the lovely historical area to eat in. There is a large church in every town so it is easy to find these spots. We managed to find our way through the large city of Mulhouse & get to a fairly nice ... read more

Day 9: Neuf-Brisach all day. Had a great day in this little town. The campground owners were exceptional and let us charge all the electronics & even gave us an umbrella to walk to town for the evenings festivities. We walked to town & then took the trike in for the afternoon and to ride the parameter of the Fort. It is quite incredible with beautifully kept homes, and we even spotted a residence for seniors/elderly which was nice. A note is that in France & Germany we've notice few people use canes or crutches or and many with no walkers, but rather they use what I would call a pair of canes with arm braces (like Forest Gump) or hiking poles- just interesting. We wandered into a local establishment for lunch and clarified that sharing ... read more

Day 6: Hagenbach to Gambsheim- 70km Weather: Beautiful sunny day when we woke up at Kurt & Monikas place. Monika bid her farewell after setting out a beautiful typical German breakfast of breads, meats, cheese, coffee and juice. We were so fortunate as Kurt gave us a private tour to the border of France and pointed out so many different things and answered many questions. We saw Mistletoe growing in the trees, many different birds and we would never have known we were crossing into France had Kurt not been with us. The photo shows Denis in France and I in Germany sitting on the trike. We pedaled a lot this day and were headed to another town when a kind gentlemen noted there was a lovely town campsite in Gambsheim. It was beautiful and we ... read more

Day 8: Strasbourg to Neuf-Brisach Weather- sprinkled a little on and off today as we rode but nothing so much that we got really wet. It was nice not to have the heat considering the distance we rode. We left about 8:00 and headed to the Chocolate Museum which was 'okay' but not really worth the delay in travel. We did however, have a lovely escort to the museum by two Route Security girls. We left there and started riding steady throughout the day. We stopped in a really nice little village at a bakery for pizza lunch, STRONG coffee, and a brownie for dessert. We rode abourt 60km along a paved canal with many locks and wonderful boats and people passing by us. We planned to ride longer today but even impressed ourselves as by ... read more

Today we woke up to lovely weather and took the bus and train to Strasbourg proper to see the whole area. We had an awesome day of sightseeing with such a beautiful city. We walked and enjoyed the many bakeries for breakfast and lunch. We then had a nice supper in Petite France in a lovely restaraunt. The highlight of the day was the boat tour of the entire historical area with all the canals throughout Strasbourg. As well, the tour of the Church was amazing as it is beyond belief that people constructed this so long ago. It was just wonderful and we took the train/bus back and had an earlier evening ready to head out the next day.... read more
