We have enjoyed following you in China... now that you have been honored as Blogger of the Week, we look forward to reading your blgos about Australia.
Yao Ming Isn't Short Northern Chinese (like Yao Ming) can be pretty tall. You're right about southerners being the shorties. But not all of us are short. My dad was taller than your dad.
When I went to the Great Wall in '79, there was no gondola. We just climbed on and walked it. It was pretty rundown then, even in the spots where most of the tourists went (which was about 1/4 mile). We went further. The thing I didn't realize was how winding, (up and down & side to side) it was, which made it had to keep balanced and walk. But we did. It was quite an experience.
Hong Kong has dim sum we don't have in the U.S. so it will be a terrific treat!!!
So Why Did They Think YOU Could Speak Chinese?? Wasn't it fun having people talk to you, expecting you could understand every word? I had that happen to me in Japan back in 1972, when Gen's high school buddy Marion and I would walk around Tokyo. Marion, white girl, spoke really good Japanese because she had been living there for a couple of years, and I spoke only what I learned in Japanese 1A in summer school at UC Berkeley, were wandering around, getting lost in the Ginza. So, Marion would ask for directions, and then the Japanese people would proceed to answer to me, who couldn't catch one word. So, I know how that feels.
The reason why most Chinese, including those who immigrated from China after WWII, like my parents, hated the Japanese was because of the WWII atrocities committed by the Japanese to everyone they invaded, and they invaded the eastern coastal areas of China. The Japanese soldiers were probably as bad as the Nazi's when it comes to atrocities.
Don't waste your time going to Shaolin Chelsea, all the real monks are in shows at Epcot or teaching on Sunnyvale-Saratoga road next to the Japanese Italian place. I have two hours of video of my trip to Shaolin with the Wing Chun Club that you can watch from the comfort of the sofa from which you napped away your break. You can watch that show as its the same one they do on PBS.
Dad
Sounds like you're having fun! The pictures look awesome! And sounds like you're having a great time!
1. Mr. Hu's?! Couldn't have picked a sketchier place? Haha
2. Overnight trains sound scary.
3. No way you do not plan trips a week in advance (unless you changed that from when you were in London planning it right before we go somewhere). Haha
Hope you're having a great time! Jealous of all of your adventures!
Miss you!
Re: Sounds like you're having fun! Thanks Will! 1. Yeah Mr. Hu's was by far the sketchiest experience I have ever had, besides the overnight train of course. 3. Ok well by that, I meant that you usually had everything planned and I just followed you :P There's no Will here to plan everything so we just have to YOLO everything. Haha I miss all of our YOLO crowd--people look at me funny when I say it here. Hope Babson is swell! Miss you too!
Response to Blog RE Food in China Correction: My father ate dog in China. Since we (the kids) grew up in the US, we did not eat dog (which I'm sure is illegal in the US). He also didn't sleep with his dogs, as he wouldn't have slept with his chickens, ducks or pigs. Those are raised for food, not pets. The dog was treated like the other food animals.
Gee, a Blog about Food in China! Wow, it sounds like you're getting to see the real China, food and all. I bet a lot of restaurants in China deliver like your McD's delivery guy. McD's is just keeping up with competition.
I can eat almost anything, but I'm not sure I could've eaten some of the stuff you tried. I'm sure the dog meat wasn't golden retriever. My dad used to raise a dog from time to time for eating. Looking forward to the next blog.
Re: Gee, a Blog about Food in China! Gung Gung used to raise dog to eat?? Did you guys eat dog a lot for dinner? I just think that if I had a pet cow who slept in my bed every night I don't think I would be able to eat beef.
AHAHA. Okay funny thing. So before I came to Beijing, my mom also gave me a huge list of things I could/couldn\'t eat or drink (tap water being one of them) and I was literally paranoid when I got here. I can say that bottled water is okay (not environmentally friendly, but I\'d rather live ya know?). There\'s actually a lot of GOOD and CHEAP (it\'s quite ridiculous how cheap things are) food.... but I\'ve lost a lot of weight since being here haha.
I\'m sure you\'ll survive fine, and maybe you can give me tips when I go to Shanghai next year xD
Great London Theater Experience Well, Chelsea, sounds like you are getting the full London theater experience. London has terrific theater, maybe even better than New York. I always enjoy seeing the London cast, whenever they have shows that come to New York from London. (They don't always keep the London cast.)
So, on to the Olympics??
Hi I love reading about what your doing! Its so fun to me knowing what your doing considering we hardly see each other. Im glad your having an amazing time and can't wait to go on that hike when you get back. Well a different one because I'm gone:(
Love,
Kenzie
Back after 6 years for a "3 week only" stint, here are my thoughts as I travel to the Owyeung family village in China. Still witty and sarcastic, but I'm a little less dramatic and a lot more sassy. OK maybe not less dramatic. I've also traded out the Chinese proverbs for just one word, "YOLO".
