Asia » Japan » Nara April 17th 2024

Late start today because Krissy and Oscar slept in until 8:30. We still managed to catch the 9:30 train to Nara and got there about an hour later after one train change. As usual we picked up some buns for breakfast and with just 10 minutes to spare Krissy decided to line up at Starbucks for coffees and matcha latte and made an order. Daisy and I waited for the drinks so Krissy and Oscar would have time to find an elevator if needed. We just made it in time at 9.30 and got to Kintetsu-Nara station just over an hour later. We started walking towards Nara Park and there were deer everywhere on the footpath outside the park. Vendors are selling Deer crackers at strategic places for $2. We bought some and entered the park ... read more

Sometimes, you must go into the water when fishing with a float rod and fly fishing tackle. This situation is typical in areas with a flat coast, where the depth increases gradually. This kind of fishing requires special equipment. You can't do without a wading suit. This article will look at which waders are best suited for various conditions. What should you pay attention to when purchasing clothing? How should you eliminate any tears in apparel? Read to learn the answers. Criteria for Choosing a Wading Suit In many fishing stores, wading suits are usually called waders. These are pants with sewn-on socks made of waterproof material. However, the material may vary. In one case, it is ordinary PVC or nylon. It does not absorb water, but it is not entirely comfortable for the body to ... read more

Today was a day of beautiful scenes. Set off early to find a cafe for breakfast but the one we were thinking of was closed so we decided to head to the bus stop to go to Kiyomizu-dera. We ended up buying some food from a convenience store and ate some waiting at the bus stop. We got to the Sannenzaka area around 9:50 and the walk up the steep hill to the temple complex was interesting in itself, with the path lined with shops. We stopped at a great coffee and donut place for coffee and donuts of course. Then some shopping for gifts before finally reaching the temple complex at about 10:40. Kiyomizudera is a temple perched on a hill, offering panoramic views of the city. The complex is in a beautiful setting full ... read more

Asia » Maldives » Raa Atoll April 15th 2024

The travel journal continues, dear reader, from where we left off on the beautiful island of Maafushi. I'm now in the third week of my travels in this intriguing country. Maldives consists of a series of atolls just south of Sri Lanka and close to the equator. Of course the world knows the destination as a famed tropical paradise for the rich and famous. However, the country is opening up to local hosts on the islands who will benefit from the pristine marine environment that has attracted tourists over the years, and not just for the resort island operators. I'm here partly to investigate whether it is practical to visit the Maldives for an extended period of time and not leave as a pauper, Risky you might suggest,.. sure, but a worthwhile experiment either way. So ... read more

We decided to have the hotel buffet breakfast which was good and set off fairly late around 09:40am. It was only a short 12 minute trip on the train to the Inari Station, right opposite the temple entrance, but we hadn't counted on the number of different lines converging into Kyoto Station. Like living opposite Central Station in Sydney but much more complicated. Took us quite some time to work out where we had to go and then had a long wait in the train before it set off. Reached the temple entrance at 10:25 and proceeded to follow the hordes of tourists. Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head of all of Japan's Inari Shrines. Inari is the Shinto God of Rice. Its famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which straddle a network of ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Tat Lo April 15th 2024

On the 7th of October, just prior to my solo return to Laos, we witnessed Hamas slaughter and kidnap, crazily initiating what was sure to be, and was/is a terrible retribution. As heinous as the Hamas action was the Israeli response has justly seen world-wide condemnation, including many Jewish voices, who simply cannot condone the flippant disregard for the thousands of collateral innocent lives lost and the hundreds of thousands displaced, their livelihoods and homes destroyed, with starvation a very real threat. It is difficult not to view the Israeli offensive as a genocide of the Palestinian people and even harder not to consider the Palestinian scattering an ethnic cleansing. There again, the latter is hardly novel as what little was left of Palestine after the creation of Israel in 1947 (and the subsequent land-grabs of ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo » Shibuya April 15th 2024

Everyone wants to experience the iconic Shibuya Crossing at least once, and for good reason: the pedestrian intersection is often hailed as the world's busiest. But to fully appreciate the magnitude of this organized chaos, you have to see the landmark from above, and the best place to do that is at the 11th floor Sky Lobby in Shibuya Hikarie. We had lunch up there, and the view was spectacular! This is not an observation deck, but with floor-to-ceiling windows, the Sky Lobby affords a panoramic view of Shibuya Scramble Crossing. Plus, it's free. Just take the B5 exit at Shibuya Station and hop on the elevator to the 11th floor. But there i more to Shibuya than the scramble crossing. Nine rail lines run by four companies converge here. Everyone meets at Hachiko, the statue ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hiroshima » Hiroshima April 15th 2024

After much internal deliberation, I arrived at Hiroshima. I knew this will be a tougher part of the journey, given what the city had been through, but I came with an attitude to see the city beyond the atomic bomb. First day, I went and explored the Shukkeien Garden. Built in the Edo period in the 17th century, this is a beautiful garden with the backdrop of Hiroshima city, with Koi ponds, lovely nature and a small bamboo grove. While small in size, I really enjoyed the nature here. This garden was a stone's throw away from the epicenter of the atomic bomb and had suffered extensive damage, but there are still trees here that survived the bomb and continue to grow. Nature has its ways to survive man's actions. The next day, I went on ... read more

Asia » Japan » Kyoto » Kyoto » Higashiyama April 14th 2024

Casual start to the day as our Shinkansen bullet train was booked for 12:07 and were only a 30 minute bus ride from Odawara Station. We were a bit too casual though, and just missed our bus so had to wait an extra 40 minutes. We reached Odawara around 9:30.am. This gave us 2.5 hours before our train, so we put our bags into two lockers at the station and had breakfast at Mr Donuts, before walking to Odawara Castle. We followed the directions to the main gate and walked through to the castle. It was lovely walk, with cherry blossoms lining the main road. When we finally reached the castle, there was a long queue going into the castle, so we decided we didn’t have time and continued our walk through the park when we ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Southern Province April 14th 2024

So, volleyball is the national sport of Sri Lanka. You wouldn’t know it, given the number of cricket games we’ve seen in progress, even some with what looked like a tennis ball. But a great bonding opportunity with our driver Nishantha when we can discuss which Big Bash team we follow! After a long, boring and uncomfortable flight, which was topped off with what seemed like an equally long trip to the terminal, the rest of the formalities went off without a hitch and we arrived at our hotel at around 1am. No one really cared too much about the welcome drink but the aircon was very much appreciated. We were happy with a relaxed start to the day before a quick tour of Negombo and its lagoon before heading south towards Galle. A lunch stop ... read more
