What a surprise to find ourselves in Thailand. We had all focused on preparing for China and really knew very little about this Kingdom. Yes, the locals refer to it as their Kingdom with their beloved king. Our local guide was very accommodating and showed us the city highlights in our brief stay. He took us to the Royal Palace and the Holy Temple, with the Jade Buddha. The temple and palace were stunning. Glittering gold, bright colors, well-preserved icons and buildings. We took a ride through the canals on a Sampan and then fought the traffic. The town was all spiffed up for the 60th anniversary of their beloved King. All sorts of royal dignataries were arriving so traffic was horrendous. We wanted to go see the city lit for the celebrations but there was ... read more

D'ailleurs ... read more

The drive from Vietnam to Laos began with slight confusion as everyone on the bus was heading to different destinations but after a couple of hours we stopped at Dong Ha and everyone was shepherded to the relevant bus, or in our case, a death trap. The comfortable first leg of the journey gave way to memories of Thai mini bus journeys as our driver made the 75 km trip to the border in about 10 minutes traveling an average speed of jesus christ per hour. We eventually arrived in Savannakhet after another bus transfer and went for a look around. Laos has the prestigious honor of being the most bombed nation in the history of warfare. During the Vietnam conflicts U.S bombers returning from bombing raids would drop their excess load over the Laos side ... read more

Sorry this isn't very up-to-date. It took a while to get my computer hooked up to the wireless network! I miss everyone at home so much and it has only been a week and a day! But so far on my trip.... I went on a canal tour on this crazy small boat with my four other roommates and our guide, Boon. He is extremely cool and is only 19 so basically doesn't go by the rules the organization gives him, nor does he try and stay in budget when he takes us out. So this of course makes everything way more fun haha. But back to the canal, we stopped off at a few different places along the way. One was a Lotus garden. Very very pretty. Another stop was a fruit farm and this ... read more

Oh, the ups and downs. The more I find out about this place, the more I can’t seem to understand it. For more strange, sometimes drunken, never normal adventures, I now have over 1100 pictures up for browsing on my photo site. http://jetsetseattle.zoto.com/galleries (bookmark and I wear smile!) The first thing I can’t understand—how I got a girlfriend. Her name is Ryoko and she’s cute as a button. I can’t even get a date in the states and somehow I’ve managed to pull off a somewhat stable relationship with a Japanese girl who doesn’t speak English. Maybe I talk too much in the US. Even though, Ryoko and I are having a great time. We go on dates maybe 2-3 times a week, and they’re always a ton of fun. We’ll usually go out to eat, ... read more

I spent about 20 hours in Rach Gia before catching the hydrofoil to Phou Quoc. The town itself is quite busy perhaps b/c of its proximity to the Cambodian border and the gulf of Thailand (good for fishing) but it is not blessed with much scenerary. ... read more

Hello again, live from Tokyo. We left Shizuoka early this morning. It has been raining for most of the day with some pretty darn blustery winds too. My umbrella I brought with me couldn't hack it and broke within 5 minutes of stepping our of our hotel. We managed to get a pair of good sturdy umbrellas though, for only 200 yen a piece!! Taking full advantage of our Rail Pass,we got back on the bullet train and headed to Tokyo to drop our bags off. Then we headed to Shin-Yokohama, back to the darn Ramen Museum so Robert could get one last bowl of juicy ramen at the museum. We were going to buy some and bring it back but since the noodles are considered raw goods (they're not freeze-dried like cup-o-noodles) we'd have to ... read more

It's been an interesting past five months. I've learned to like myself more... I've learned to like dentistry! Cockroaches and Rats don't scare me anymore. Don't get me wrong, I am not going to jump at the chance to sleep with one in my bed, but I don't jump as high. I have learned to communicate without speaking... and understand someone even though their words are foreign to me. As a 'nguoi nuoc noi' (foreign person) who stands out because of her curly hair, I've even learned to love the people who look at me strangely, and smile back.. because I'm to terms with the fact that I'm as curious looking to them as their beliefs and customs are to me. If I can gawk and stare, they can gawk and stare. Sound fair to you? ... read more

I think im crap at adjusting to the heat and the long days in the sun, so I spent most of today asleep and feeling crap. About 5 litres of water and i'm back up to 99%, but not the 100% that I require to go and eat locusts and cockroaches!... read more
