Finally, hello from Ko Samui, Thailand! Took my time didn't I? Well if the truth be known I've just been trying to get my head back to normal since the flight and since experiencing Bangkok in all its glory!!! (Here's me thinking I'd seen it all...yeah right!) Myself and Susan arrived into Bangkok on Monday and were very fortunate to be able to meet up with an ex-pat Richard, originally from Belfast (god, us folk get everywhere!) to show us around. Our first night was pretty chilled and we met his family who were out on holiday and had a nice meal with them. When the end of the night rolled around me and Sus were told that we'd experience the REAL Bangkok the next night! I think Rich was testing the waters that first night ... read more

after a 10 hour flight (which fortunately i was able to sleep through since i had a whole row to myself), and a bus ride from the aiport to the hotel, I'm' finally here! No need to go to internet cafes like in europe since this hotel has internet access. It's pretty cold, a little colder than in paris, i think. Since I didn't really get to the hotel until 8 pm or something, I didn't get to really explore the area too much but we're going to have an early day tomorrow. Shelby is helpful since she pretty much understands and speaks and reads Japanese, so she's been getting us around and ordered me a sandwich today. It's 16 hours ahead of LA time, so my timing is all messed up. It's 10:55 pm here ... read more

We arrived back from the jungle on Wednesday afternoon but have been too tired to update since then! We left on Monday morning at about 9am after breakfast and travelled about 1 hour to Doi Intanon National Park in an open back jeep to begin our trekking. We had a quick stop at a local market to pick up supplies such as water and toilet roll. Our first stop was elephant trekking where we shared our elephant with a girl we met travelling on her own - called Rachel - we had the seat on his back but she had to sit on the elephant’s neck! We began our trek across the National Park, going up and down hill our elephant sometimes refusing to follow the others and making his own way, stopping occasionally to ... read more

ok so , feelin a little sore and drousey so bear with the spelling and the disorientated ravings! will explain further on, its all good! so last entry was a little boring, iv done loads since. we had a day bikeing it around Vientiane! imagine me, renting a bike! it was pretty funny at first, i was as awkward as a seal trying to cycle with flippers, big wide corners and the odd stumble, but, as we got lost, i improved, became more fluid or whatever and we reached our destination- the market oh what a trial, you just want to buy absolutly everyting, well, the white goods didnt take my fancy-i'd never fit a wah\shing machine im my rucksack- although it is a 100L. we walked for hours, stalls and stalls or wonderful scarves, bags ... read more

F16/03/2007: who is karaoke ?! Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou By LilooChinaMarch 16th 2007 As all the stomachs had to be filled for being the best singer of the night, we were invited by Alma and Chocolate at a Cantonese restaurant where we ate very nice typical Cantonese food. Then, we went to a karaoke place at Changshu Lu where you can do shopping until midnight at least! At the karaoke place, compare to our Chinese friends, we had very professional attitudes (look at Gilles!) but we have not their beautiful voice like those of people from “Star Academy” TV show at all! I think that it was one of my best evening here in China a... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » New Delhi March 16th 2007

Delhi wasn't what we'd expected at all. We'd been told by copious amounts of travellers to avoid Delhi like the plaque, almost wihout exception people would launch into a virulent tirade describing all of the city's ills, reeling off an impressive list of reasons to steer clear of India's capital. Reading William Darymple's 'City of Djinns' had piqued an interest in seeing the city, and we had Chinese visas to acquire, so we decided to disregard the fraught advice and see Delhi for ourselves. We were pleasantly surprised. Well, except for our accomodation, which proved to be the almost the worst place (bar Trivandrum) that we've stayed. As a general rule we don't stay in guidebook recommended places, but rather use the guidebook to find an area, and stay in a nicer, cheaper non-listed place (which ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi March 16th 2007

HANOI - 16/03/07 to 17/03/07 Hanoi is a busy city with about 3.5 million people. The main form of transport is by motorbike which makes it interesting trying to cross the busy streets. Near death experiences are common. We arrived late so decided to go out for a few 17cent beers. What a bargain!!!! Since it was so late, no restaurants were open so we ate some floppy corn from a street vendor who tried to rip Julie off. But being assertive and loud, we stopped him from getting away. The hotel where we stayed were really helpful and planned our whole Vietnam trip. Totally recommend anyone travelling to Hanoi to stay there. The hotel staff even made sure we boarded the night train safely to Sapa................. ... read more

Had a day of sightseeing- the S21 Genocide Museum and then the Killing Fields. Was quite sad and made you think a bit, just crazy how recently everything has happened in Cambodia - there are still mass graves yet to be excavated. Spent the afternoon helping out with the street kids- was really great- about 50 or so kids came and we played games, sang songs, taught them words with pics and played hangman! They loved it! They did seem to befriend us over next few days which was nice- but made u realise that its the same kids that wander the street trying to sell books, scarfs, anything they can! Wandered over to the riverside for the evening, tried the famoud local Amok Curry- very yummy, quite like a thai green or red one ... read more

2 of my juniors and I were invited by Mitsui Chemicals to attend an international symposium in Kazusa Akademia Hall. (Refer to my previous post on the symposium.) Mitsui Chemicals was very kind and it arranged the Okura Chiba Hotel as our accomodation for 3 nights (13th, 14th and 15th March). The hotel was situated in Chiba City near Chiba-minato (Chiba harbour). On the morning of 15th March, I woke up earlier than expected. Since I still had 1 more hour before meeting my friends for breakfast, I decided to go out for a stroll. I explored the area around the hotel. I saw the Chiba City Hall, Chiba police station, Chiba Central Post Office, Chiba Prefecture Art Museum and some other municipal buildings. I also saw the unique suspended monorail. (It was my first ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Pulau Weh March 16th 2007

Slung into Singapore our now worldly and bearded boys are on the return journey, the Odyssey has commenced and with it a new chapter of tribulations, considerations and felicitations unfolds. Our stay with the Lion People can only be described as fabulous. This was thanks to our Singapore connection; Sarah. Having been whisked off from the airport we soon found ourselves on the 17th floor of Regency Park. Condominium luxury lifestyle ensued over Gin and Tonics, marble floors and practically panoramic views of the city. We spent our time getting ourselves together, making and executing decisions, preparing and gathering our thoughts. All the while breathing in Singapore’s atmosphere. Hawker centers, Little India, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Orchard Road and Raffles may sound familiar? Throwing peanut shells at one another in the Long Bar at Raffle’s Hotel, ... read more
