Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur March 21st 2024

We’ve just enjoyed two great days in the fascinating city of Jodhpur and I’m writing this while travelling by bus to our next hotel in Pushkar. It’s been a whirlwind of sightseeing, shopping, chatting, eating and drinking - so much to take in. A ‘feast for the senses’ as many people warned me it would be! Jodhpur is well set up for tourism with an amazing and well preserved fort perched high the hill. It’s much drier than I expected and unsurprisingly, our guide Kamal says it’s surrounded by desert. The nearby countryside is flat and devoid of most vegetation except small scrubby looking plant life. It must be super tough for anyone trying to farm this land. The toughest life in Jodhpur is reserved for the people who live on the street. Right near our ... read more

Thursday already. Sleeping so much better, maybe too good now because I don’t want to get out of bed when the alarm goes off. I’ve even skipped breakfast downstairs the last two days for the extra 30 minutes of sleep. A power bar and protein drink on the way to BTS is plenty for me, especially knowing that there an omelette and rice waiting for me on the way back to the hotel ! The morning was surprisingly cool. It was also amazingly quiet when I arrived at the gym. I wasn’t early today either. Maybe everyone is just running out of gas as the week comes to an end. I did my 8 laps, with sprint a short spring down part of the alley and then back. I’m still finishing the runs in about 30 ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Southern Province » Galle March 20th 2024

We arrived in Colombo on Monday. As we had visited before we had booked the ship excursion to Galle. Having watched the cricket from there we had noticed the old fort next to the cricket ground. It was an all day trip. We started with a 2 hour bus trip through the Sri Lankan country side. Very green with white temples scattered around, it was an interesting trip. Once we arrived in Galle we drove to the fort. As we entered Galle we passed an picturesque beach where there were many small fishing boats, and fishermen selling their wares on the side of the road. Our guide said they do business there because it costs too much to have a stall in the fish market. Then we drove to the fort. This was a very busy place with ... read more

Asia » Taiwan » Taipei March 20th 2024

23 to 26 February 2024 – I travelled solo in Taiwan for 4 days. It was challenging to travel in a Chinese speaking country as most of the people I met during my travels couldn’t speak English. I had no sim card or GPS on my phone, so I had to use the traditional way, which was a map and asking a local to write the name of places I wanted to visit in Chinese, and pointed at it when I needed help. It took me so much time to find my way but the great thing was that I had the chance to meet people, and all the Taiwanese that I met on the way were really helpful, polite and kind. I moved around by local bus, sightseeing bus, train, MRT (metro) and taxi. When ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Da Nang March 20th 2024

I headed to Da Nang from Hoi An. While I am not a fan of big cities, I realised I won't be in a beach area for some weeks and hence chose Da Nang (also because it was close to Hoi An). Da Nang is a city with more than 1 Million people, richer than most places in Vietnam, higher population growth rate than the national average (due to migration). It has all the makings of what large cities with thriving economies become. I stayed near My Khe Beach at Da Nang, which is a popular beach. However, I reached there on a weekend and found the beach extremely crowded. Lots of people, doing all sorts of things including exercising, co-ordinated dance/aerobic routines or just their Instagram posts, it was all happening. Next day, I woke ... read more

Totally acclimated to the sleep schedule now. Got up with enough time to pack and do some extra stretching. Legs are still tight from the sparring on Monday. Looked out the window and was surprised to see the overcast sky and a light rain. That’s not good because that means it’s all jump rope for the cardio. From the gloomy looking start, and still being a bit sore, I planned to take the afternoon off. I was even thinking about skipping the morning. But I loaded up and went to the BTS. The rain was stopped on the walk to the train and to the gym, although the sky was still dark and threatening. I got to the gym and Santafaa was jumping rope. No running in rain so he doesn’t get sick. I decided to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket March 19th 2024

On March 24th we arrived in Phuket. As we had been there before we thought we would go on one of the excursions to see more. We chose Highlights of Phuket. We drove first to the southern most part of the island, Cape Prom Thep. It was a very hot day but the views from the cliff top were stunning. We walked to the top of the promontory where there is an elephant shrine. People leave statues of elephants here to ensure good luck. Fletcher would have loved to steal one or two!! A little further on was a statue of a local general and further still an unusual looking lighthouse. The statue also had small devotional figures left there by locals. An interesting place , but we were glad to return to the bus and the ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur March 19th 2024

We arrived in Udaipur airport and after successfully collecting our luggage set off to explore the ‘Venice of the East’. It didn’t disappoint. First up was a visit to the Monsoon Palace perched high on a hill overlooking picturesque Udaipur which is built on a series of lakes, the main one being Lake Pichola. Apparently it was featured in the James Bond classic ‘Octopussy’ although I don’t recall seeing it in the movie. The best part of the so-called Palace was the view which although the city was shrouded in fog was still a grand vista. The Palace on the other hand was more a slightly dilapidated white marble edifice complete with irritating monkeys that stole another tourists food right out of her hands. Then it was on to our very impressive hotel Ananta Udaipur which ... read more

Tuesday morning, and work has finally tracked me down. The phone rings at just past midnight because I hadn’t been replying to emails. Oh well, time to start paying for the trip now. That will be something for later tonight, assuming I can stay awake past sundown. I was afraid that call would keep me up the rest of the night, but I was out nearly right away. I actually needed the backup alarm this morning. That gave me just enough time to pack the gym bag, head downstairs to eat, and then trudge on over to the BTS. Eventhough I’ve been trying to get there closer to 7:30, somehow, I’m always earlier, no matter when I leave. Today as I was walking through the shops on the way to the gym, I saw Santafaa running ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok March 18th 2024

Welcome to Monday morning. Last night the latest neighbors on the 19th floor were really noisy, making a solid night sleep difficult. Finally, around midnight, I think I fell asleep for the night. My internal alarm woke may just before my alarm at 5:00. I wanted to have a little extra time this morning for a good stretch. I did find the early breakfast much more enjoyable without the tremendous crowd. After packing for the day ahead, I feel pretty good today. So far, no blisters or any bruises really after one week of training. That’s a good start for this week. I hope I’m not repeating myself too much, but I am still surprised every morning at how much more comfortable it is compared to my last trip or two. It seems mostly i travel ... read more
