My anticipated visit to Nha Trang turned into a few days of braving out the wind, clouds and occasional shower while sipping mojitos by the pool and doing plenty of reading. Nha Trang is a medium sized city situated towards the southern end of Vietnam, and showcases some of the nicest beaches in all the land here. Long stretches of white sand are lined with palm trees and loungers covered by big thatched umbrellas. The two plus mile beach runs parallel to the main boulevard behind which a vibrant neighborhood of hotels, restaurants, dive centers and tourist shops thrive. Nha Trang could probably best be described as the Hawaii of Vietnam and for many upwardly mobile Saigon city dwellers; it serves as a weekend getaway just one hour by air. And despite the spike in upscale ... read more

Greetings Fellow Ornithologists, Well as I sit and compose this latest barometric reportage from the Saigon Central Peoples Committee for the Accurate Reportage of Weather, I do so with a tinge of sadness. It is our final day living on the streets of the former capital of Viet Nam. Our 20 day diplomatic mission to bring about the end of Socialism has failed so now we are going to the Mekong Delta town of My Tho to find the rare species of butterfly known Unicornus Thylacenius. My Tho is about 75km South West of Saigon and we are tossing up whether to travel there by bus (1.5 hours) or by cargo ferry (6 hours). I'll let you all know what we decide. Once there we shall meet up with our good friends from Canberra Van, Kieu ... read more

Well, I'm back, and before you read on, I must explain why you are receiving this now, on January the 24th, over a month after I visited all of these places....basically, the following few blogs have been written in dribs and drabs during our stay in Thailand, and if you chose to read the details of my Thailand blogs, you will understand that our stay in Thailand involved a lot of partying...and sleeping....which left little time to sit and concentrate on writing a blog....So here they are now, pick and chose what you read, and if you cant be bothered reading, then there's plenty of photos to tell the stories!! Having packed away our beach stuff, we departed Mui Ne on our first bus, having managed to avoid bus travel until then. After 4 long, hot, ... read more

Saigon, what a city! Probably my favourite city so far. The people here were great. More friendly than the north and the night life...well, bad news for the liver im afraid!!! We expected a larger version of hanoi but it is quite different. The traffic was worse than hanoi....sounds impossible but it was but the streets were wider here so it didnt seem as closterphobic as hanoi. We stayed here for almost a week. The first few days were just spent chilling and wandering around the city. I bought a new camera so im back in business with the photos and a new watch(which i lost already). On the first day we decdied to go to Saigon water park. After about a 40 minute motorbike hellraising, im gonna die any second now ride, we arrived at ... read more

Greetings fellow Nerf Herders, And still we are in HCMC, which is cool because the city is really growing on us. You kind of get used to the absolutely stifling heat and the strange smells and the people looking at you wherever you go. Since the last entry we have completed quite a few tasks. First we made our way to the War Remnants Museum (formally known as the Chinese and American War Crimes Museum, I shit you not) which was quite good despite the warnings we had received from a few American tourists about its biased nature. I thought that it dealt with the war and its aftermath in a reasonable way. I had thoughts of seeing the words "American Imperialist Running Dogs and Masters of War" written everywhere, but this was not the case. ... read more

We left the delightful seafood in Mui Ne and caught the ‘local’ bus to Saigon. The guy that sold us the tickets did neglected to mention this fact and we were a little surprised when it pulled up outside our guesthouse. With minimal fuss our bags were dumped in to the space next to the driver and before we had seats we were off again. The bus was already ¾ full but there was only one other western couple along for the ride. Apart from break neck overtaking maneuvers and the ability for people to alight in the middle of nowhere we arrived in Saigon 6 hours later in one piece. The trouble with it being a local bus was that we terminated at the out of town bus station. We had a rough idea of ... read more

Greetings fellow Proctologists, We are still in Ho Chi Minh City. We started Vietnamese language classes last Tuesday at Hoc Su Pham Teachers Training College (I managed to drop some weather report in whilst eating lunch in the canteen (Fox and Jo Jo will know what this means)) and well lets just say we can gauge our progress from the amount of laughter that our pronunciation causes our teacher. It be a right hard language to talk proper no how. But the classes are fun and what is even more fun are the smiles and greetings that we receive from the students who walk past us or sit next to us when we eat lunch. They are so happy. I guess that's the thing that has surprised us both about this country. How humbling an experience ... read more

Hello from Ho Chi Minh I love this city... I really think that this country is going to be my favorite too... Saigon is quite more modern then I expected... There are neon lights all over the place... And the food is just grand... So my first real day here I started off with going to the Ben Thanh Market. It was quite cleaner than the ones that I have seen so far.... They have everything... But all I needed was a new pair of sandals because the ones that I bought in Pattaya broke when I was walking all over the place at Ankor Wat... I found them and after 5 mins of haggling I bought them for 100,000 dong($6.50us) I then took a clyco or peddled rickshaw to the war museum for a dollar... ... read more
