Discovering Sài Gòn by bus

I left my motorbike in Hanoi and went south with my backpack and a heavy bag two months ago. As I don’t have my own motorbike in Sài Gòn, I have to take a bus and sometimes I use a motorbike taxi. Sài Gòn is a very large city with many districts and the city continues to be expanded. For the people living in Sài Gòn, it doesn’t matter for them to travel 10-20km to their working places every day by motorbikes.

After a few days in Sài Gòn, I got used to the city bus system. From my sister’s place, I got bus No. 44 and went to Bến Thành market which is considered as the center of the city. This bus station is quite large and you can get a bus from this point to many places in the city (see photo No. 15 for the route information). One of the things I found special in Sài Gòn is that in some places there is no board for bus stop and people paint the word “Bus” with "W" yellow mark right on the road (see photo No. 29).

There are two different colors of bus in Sài Gòn which are green and blue and they are used for different routes. Tuk tuks are also used on some routes and they have numbers and route indications on both sides. A bus ticket is pretty cheap, VND 5,000 or VND 6,000 (25 US cents). There are male or female conductors working in the bus. On some routes there are boxes in the bus. Passengers put money into the box and get a ticket. One day I gave more money into the box as I didn’t have small notes. The driver had to give me the change while driving the bus, so I think it was uncomfortable for him. The doors of green buses are quite low, so I had my head hit many times. I must remember to lower my head, but I always forget.

If you take a bus in different cities of Vietnam, you will find that the bus is painted with different colors, for example, in Hanoi it’s yellow and red, while in Sài Gòn it’s blue/green and white. The conductors in Hanoi are men, while you can see more women working as conductors in Sài Gòn.

Yesterday I took bus No. 44 from Bình Thạnh district. I decided to go until the end of the route to see what was there. The final destination is District 4 and I saw Kênh Tẻ canal with a bridge, boats and buildings as well as local men catching fish. There is a police station along the canal and I saw policemen practicing parade. It was interesting to see another part of the city. Unfortunately, I got sun sick after visiting a market in this area, so I had to take a taxi to go back to my sister’s place. It was an unpleasant experience as I was really sick. It’s very hot in Sài Gòn these days and now I have to stay out of the sun.

The photos in this blog were taken on Bùi Viện street and Đề Thám street of District 1 (western backpackers area), Hồ Chí Minh campaign museum (it was closed when I visited, but I could see wreckage of American aircrafts, tanks and trucks used during the American war), Kênh Tẻ canal in District 4, and other streets of Sài Gòn. I also went back to Thảo Cầm Viên zoo park. It was exactly 20 years since my first visit to this park in 1993. Now there is a train to go around the park. It was Sunday so there were many local people sitting on grass and having meals with their families and friends. A boy sitting next to me in the train said that his son goes to this zoo park every weekend. For him, this zoo park is a paradise. I also enjoyed walking around the park and watching different types of animals like elephants, giraffes, rhinos, deer etc. My next blog will be about another experience in Sài Gòn.

Note: Miền Đông bus station in Sài Gòn is the largest bus station in Vietnam. Buses go from this place to eastern and northern provinces. For visiting the Mekong Delta, you must go to Miền Tây bus station.

Khám phá Sài Gòn bằng xe buýt

Hai tháng trước đây, tôi để lại xe máy của mình ở Hà Nội và đi về phương Nam với chiếc ba lô và một túi xách rất nặng. Vì tôi không có xe máy ở Sài Gòn, nên tôi phải đi lại bằng xe buýt và thỉnh thoảng đi bằng xe ôm. Sau một vài ngày ở Sài Gòn, tôi đã làm quen được với hệ thống xe buýt ở đây. Từ Quận Bình Thạnh, tôi đi xe buýt số 44 về chợ Bến Thành. Từ đây có xe buýt đi đến rất nhiều nơi (Xem ảnh số 15). Một điều đặc biệt ở Sài Gòn là nhiều nơi không có biển dừng xe, mà người ta sơn ngay lên mặt đường dòng chữ “Xe buýt” với chữ W màu vàng (Xem ảnh số 29).

Có hai loại xe buýt màu xanh da trời và màu xanh lá cây để đi các tuyến khác nhau. Ngoài ra, xe tuk tuk 3 bánh cũng được dùng để chở khách. Hai bên thân xe có in số và hành trình của tuyến đường. Vé xe khá rẻ, chỉ 5,000 – 6,000 đồng một lượt. Người soát vé là nam hoặc nữ, nhưng phần nhiều là nữ. Trên một số tuyến đường (ví dụ như từ sân bay hoặc từ Suối Tiên về chợ Bến Thành) có để một chiếc hộp nhỏ màu trắng trong suốt. Khách lên xe tự động cho tiền vào hộp rồi xé vé. Một lần, tôi đưa nhiều tiền hơn vào hộp vì không có tiền lẻ. Người lái xe buýt vừa lái xe vừa lo trả lại tiền thừa cho tôi. Tôi cảm thấy như vậy thì khá bất tiện cho người lái xe. Cửa của xe buýt màu xanh lá cây cũng khá thấp, nên tôi hay bị va đầu mỗi khi xuống xe.

Nếu bạn đi bằng xe buýt ở các thành phố khác nhau của Việt Nam, bạn sẽ thấy xe buýt được sơn bằng những màu khác nhau. Ở Hà Nội là màu vàng và đỏ, còn ở Sài Gòn là màu xanh và trắng. Người soát vé ở Hà Nội thường là các cậu thanh niên, còn ở Sài Gòn thì là các cô gái.

Hôm qua, tôi bắt xe số 44 từ quận Bình Thạnh. Tôi quyết định đi đến tận cùng con đường để xem ở Cảng quận 4 có gì. Bến cuối chính là Kênh Tẻ với những con thuyền đi dọc theo dòng kênh, một chiếc cầu bắc qua kênh, những tòa nhà phản chiếu xuống mặt nước, và những người đàn ông đang ngồi câu cá. Gần đó là một doanh trại của công an và họ đang tập bước đều với tiếng hô "Một, Hai". Thật thú vị khi khám phá một khu vực khác của thành phố. Đáng tiếc là tôi bị cảm nắng sau khi thăm chợ, nên tôi phải quay trở về bằng taxi. Thời tiết ở Sài Gòn rất nóng vào những ngày này và bây giờ thì tôi phải tránh ở ngoài nắng quá nhiều.

Các bức ảnh trong blog này được chụp trên đường Bùi Viện và Đề Thám của Quận 1 (khu phố Tây), bảo tàng chiến dịch Hồ Chí Minh (tiếc là bảo tàng đóng cửa vào ngày chủ nhật, tuy nhiên tôi cũng được xem các hiện vật trưng bày ở ngoài trời), Kênh Tẻ của Quận 4 và một số đường phố của Sài Gòn. Tôi cũng quay trở lại thăm Thảo Cầm Viên. Đúng chính xác 20 năm rồi tôi mới quay trở lại đây. Lần đầu tiên tôi đến Thảo Cầm Viên là vào tháng 3 năm 1993. Hiện giờ, ở đây có tàu điện đi một vòng quanh công viên. Vì là ngày chủ nhật, nên ở đây có nhiều người ngồi ăn uống trên các thảm cỏ cùng với gia đình và bạn bè. Một cậu ngồi cạnh tôi nói là con trai của cậu tuần nào cũng đòi bố cho đi xem Thảo Cầm Viên. Đối với cậu bé thì các con thú như hươu cao cổ, hà mã, ngựa vằn, voi, dê v.v. luôn thật hấp dẫn. Mặc dù trời nắng nóng, tôi cũng rất thích đi dạo quanh công viên và xem các loại động vật ở đây. Blog tiếp theo của tôi sẽ là về một trải nghiệm khác ở Sài Gòn.

I love the buses in Saigon too
Great blog. I also love to get buses in Saigon and see where they go. There's one, maybe no 7? That goes a long way through several districts to a can al where you can catch a car ferry across the water.
