I was picked up from my hotel by a mini bus and we headed west of the city for about an hour. I had only seen things on the internet about Mỹ Sơn, but didn’t realize how spectacular it would be. It reminded me of photos I’d seen of Cambodia, where I want to go one day. The big shame was that the American’s bombed the ancient buildings during the Vietnam war, as the Viet Cong used this area for their operations. Some areas still have unexploded ordinance. The heads of the statues are missing, as they were taken by the French and are now located in the Louvre in Paris. Afterwards we took a boat ride on the river back to Hoi An. I did some more wandering around the town before heading ... read more

I had been saying how I wanted to visit My Son days days now. Knowing this place was a place of ruins (and I love ruins) it had to be booked. So today was the day. Very excited! We got picked up early in the morning by a mini van with a bunch of other people and our tour guide. Again, it was a lush sunny day. The tour guide gave us some information about the ruined temples and towers then we had our own time to walk around take plenty of photos - I was happy. In the evening, Poppy left us to move onto Nha Trang as she had less days left in Vietnam than Rose and I. We waved her off and said we would probably catch up with her a day or ... read more

My Son is, for some, Vietnam's answer to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. For us it was merely a taste of what awaits us in a few weeks' time. It is possible to get up at 5am, hire a private driver and get there before the tourist hoardes arrive. 5am starts are not for us if they can be avoided, so we took a tour. 8am starts are still pretty tough but at least they are palatable. We had arrived in Hoi An the previous day and you can read all about it in the next blog. After breakfast we made our way over the bridge and sat outside the Banana Split cafe who had organised our excursion. The traffic was a nightmare. Apparently it was a "special" day in the lunar calendar and there were weddings ... read more

My (pronounced me ) Son is an area of brick hindu towers from the Champa kingdom...very similar to the Prambanam in Indonesia..this is due to trade links with india and Indonesia. Huge areas of History which is just ignored in the western world. The best temples were bombed by the US because they thought VietCong were hiding there. UNESCO is restoring some of the towers but there are visible bomb craters. It was nice and shady with a breeze making it less hot. There was a small museum and some Hindu carvings including ligmams and yoni. We went back to Hoi An partly by bus but eventually caught a boat for a cruise down the muddy river. It was fairly interesting seeing the overloaded river craft and duck farms on the bank until ominously the engine ... read more

During our time in Hoi An as well as exploring the sites around Hoi An itself we took several day trips. First to the Holy City of My Son. The ancient Cham city of My Son is another Unesco world heritage site is tne of the most stunning sites in the area. The ruins are nestled in a lush valley surrounded by hills and the massive Hon Quap (Cat’s tooth mountain.) My Son became a religious centre in the late fourth century and was occupied until the 13th Century. The longest period of development of any city in the Mekong region. The ruins are about 35 kilometres from Hoi An. The ruins were interesting but I guess we’ve been spoilt as they pale into insignificance after the Angkor Wat ruins in Cambodia that we visited ... read more

Left Hoi An at 05:00 to My Son, the spiritual centre of the Champa people that existed between the 3rd and 14th centuries. The Vietnamese pushed down from the North and the Cham were forced to relocate South into the Mekong Delta, where some of their descendants are found. At one time, the Cham spread from what is now Southern China to Eastern Myanmar to present day Vietnam. They are Hindu and of course were heavily influenced by traders from India. The ancient text on the stone tablets is some kind of Sanskrit derivative and is not used by the Cham today. To me, it looks similar to the stone writings in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka ... and the timing would have been similar too. Oh, almost forgot. The Americans bombed these ruins too. I guess that's ... read more

A man knocked on our door at 7:55 and told us to hurry! So we were surprised and went downstairs and he took us on his motorbike to the place where the bus was going to pick us up at. He told us to have a seat at the restaurant there (the Candle I think...) and about 1 minute later told us no no! The bus is coming! It wasn't. But the woman in charge ran us out two baguettes to go and after waiting a little while longer, stole them back to hurry and add jelly and butter and a water bottle and some minibananas for dessert. The plain baguettes were free, but when she added the other stuff, we ended up paying her. She was really sweet. Anyways, the bus came, we dutifully took ... read more

Wednesday, 27th October 2010 "This is one place in Vietnam that I wouldn't recommend a second visit." I joined an organised half day tour with Sinh Cafe this morning to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of My Son Holyland. Located about 1 hour from Hoi An, the journey was boring as the bus was making frequent stops at different Hoi An hotels to pick up passengers along the way. We were greeted by the rainy weather which made sightseeing very difficult. As a result, the return journey by boat was cancelled. It did not help matters that the connecting points in between the ruins were merely dirt tracks with ponding water. I had to take extra care to make sure that I did not lose my footings on the muddy tracks. Once in the My ... read more
