Hanoi is a great launching pad for checking out Halong Bay, but unfortunately for us the weather turned very rainy and windy and we both found ourselves coming to the same opinion: that we would prefer heading south and eventually find some more sun and fair weather to enjoy our adventure with. The thought of being tossed about in a boat in the rain at this early stage of the trip just did not have the appeal you may think it would 😊

We chose to take a night train south to Da Nang. Train rides are such an enjoyable way to travel - Mike sleeps like a baby on them, and when we are both awake the scenery is just amazing!

Shortly after arriving in Da Nang we asked a taxi to drive us the short distance to China Beach, just to see it (china beach was a major R&R stop for most deployed American Vietnam war veterans back during the war) we found it to be overgrown with 4 and 5 star hotels, far exceeding our budget travel allowance so we requested the taxi take us another 17km south to a beautiful little town of Hoi An. This was a wise choice, we were able to find a clean room in a good location for $18 dollars a night.

......and once again, we finished the evening with a super pleasant walk and dinner.

China Beach
Love the photo of the two of you on China Beach. Your dad spent a lot of time enjoying China Beach during his Vietnam tours. No high rises or tourists then.
