We headed to Hoi’ an after another early start and annoyingly spending 2 hours driving around Hue picking people up!
We arrived in Hoi’ an at the usual hotel the bus decides to stop at with both us being quickly woken up and a bit disorientated with a woman waving a map of Hoi’ an in our faces showing where her hotel (the Grasslands) is in relation to Hoi’ an - ‘300 metres” she continually assures me. Half of the bus was alighting and walking down the road, so we decided to look at this room she’s selling, the hotel has a pool, the room is lovely, big, TV with satellite, mini bar (all beers and water that are sold in these fridges are the same as on the street!) and a balcony, not that any of this appeals to us as we are planning a one night stay. At the price of $10 US we took it.
We decided to head into town and at reception we discover that the 300 metres into town is over a 1km - but we got a free lift in so we both clamber on the back of one motorbike and head
to town stopping at his mates tailor shop. We glanced around and ran away.
This is another town T isn’t a fan of; it is a rustic town and we where here a few days after the typhoon flooded the place so it was covered in mud and recovering from it. We wondered around and after many offers of suits, shirts etc we dived into a bar to get our bearings and plan our day. People talk with such excitement about Hoi’an but T doesn’t see it and he doesn’t want a bloody suit!!!!!! However, G got herself a $6 underskirt to go under a dress which you can see everything though (she lost her other one in a wash in China). We spend the rest of the day dodgy salesmen and woman, relaxing with a few drinks and headed back to the hotel - all rather nondescript!
The next day after a lazy lie in we ventured back into town for the day and visited the Sleepy Gecko Bar on the other side of the river for a few beers and a couple of games of pool - a most pleasant place, great views of Hoi’ an
without being pestered. The owner an English chap called Steve told us about the typhoon and its effects, he points out how high the water came. The problem he explained was “the winds were blowing 100+ kph in the circular motion but was only travelling 6kph forward so it was tearing the place up as it lingered, ideally it should travel faster that way it speeds in and out quicker”.
We had a few drinks and dinner before heading back to hotel to board another sleeper bus bound for Nha Trang and the Beach!!
