Day 7 Today the breakfast just didn't seem to be enough! Bread, bread, and more bread! I felt like that about the eggs previously, now, I would really enjoy a scrambled egg.Today is a free day. We have made a group decision to hire bikes and go to Hang Mua, otherwise known as the dancing cave. We hired bikes for journey. It does cause a stir when a group go 17 white skinned Europeans go cycling by. The bike ride was good fun, not too hard and the weather was not too hot. We arrived at the foot of the cave. OMG! It is huge. It is very impressive with a small grove of trees, but the main attraction is the pagoda at the top. It is a simple alter to Quan Am who is the ... read more

We left Hanoi on a bumpy bus ride to Ninh Binh, the main reason for our trip here was to see the 'Halong Bay inland' which was Tam Coc. When we arrived at the drop off we were instantly surrounded by 5 motorbike owners and a taxi driver all wanting to take us to our hotel. We chose the safest option of the taxi. Once we got settled down we hired a scooter and guessed our way to Tam Coc. There was alot of retracing our tracks but eventually we found the signs that pointed in the right direction. Before entering Tam Coc there was a stretch of open straight road which Natalie thought would be a good place to take over the driving seat and dabble in navigating the scooter. This could've ended worse but ... read more

We went to the hotel to book a car for our sightseeing trip, but Mr Xuan kept trying to convince us to go on mopeds instead. One look at the weather was all it took to make up our minds. A day on the back of a moped in the pouring rain was not our idea of fun. Anyway with three of us it worked out cheaper to hire a car. After a traditional breakfast of noodle soup for me and fried noodles with chicken for Andy we set off on our trip in our comfy dry car. I was especially pleased to have the car when I saw the two French ladies disappear on the back of mopeds looking like they had been wrapped in bin bags. We made our first stop in Hoa Lu ... read more

A typhoon was bearing down on the north coast of Vietnam but was hanging in the China Sea, gaining strength. It was the break we needed for a quick day trip to two sites..one was called Hoa Lu, a small temple complex with Buddhist backgrounds and still in use as a worship centre. The age of complex somehow escaped my ears. The drive there was in an absolutely packed minibus with an air-conditioning system that must have been turned off to add to the already diminished horsepower of the vehicle. This did not keep the driver from forcing his way out to pass and moving all of the oncoming traffic onto the left shoulder of the road...aw..what the heck, they were ' mostly ' motorbikes anyhow. After leaving the highway ( not in the literal sense ... read more

26th April 2009 We all met for breakfast in the hotel at 7:30am, followed by the hiring of two automatic mopeds for our planned day out in Tam Coc. All fingers were crossed that the storms wouldn’t continue and ruin the day. Pili took first turn with driving the bike through the crazy traffic as I wanted to take photos while clinging onto the back. We stopped to top up on petrol and Jonathan and Lucy were approached by an old Vietnamese guy in pale blue pyjamas; they had know idea what he wanted and I don’t think he really had a clue either, anyway I got a cheeky photo out of it. We were surprised that we didn’t encounter more tourists when we arrived in Tam Coc’s market square after purchasing our National Park entrance ... read more

So....More about the pig... We hadnt booked an alarm call so when (at 7.30am) we were ripped from our slumber by the sound of a screaming pig bigger than a family saloon being strapped to a pushbike for the trip to market directly outside our bedroom we were a little more than shocked....... The vietnamese( like the cantonese) eat absolutely everything and livestock is just FOOD!!!There is a completely utilitarian attitude to the animals they eat and to western sensibilities this can seem incredibly cruel..Live pigs tied down to boards on the back of bikes..Dogs in cages with no room to turn around..Chickens and ducks three or four deep also caged on bikes..Even live fish transported on bikes..We had seen this while covering the miles to Tam Coc but the reality of witnessing the pig strapping ... read more

Once again, we're not really sure if we're on the right bus. Even though we bought tickets from the official desk at the bus station, we're instantly surrounded by touts trying to hustle us onto their buses. We eventually pinpoint the guy who has the right bus code on his log book and manage to get on his bus, but the doubt remains the same. Once again it turns out fine, but the ridiculously hectic technique of the touts leaves you unsure of anything and your head spinning. Minibuses are excellent places for people watching. I can't help noticing that about half the guys on the bus wear their fingernails long and filed like a girl's, one guy is even wearing nail polish. This trend seems to transcend age...I want to find out why they do ... read more

31/1 - travel day Hoi An - Hue After a nice early start we boarded an 8am bucket of bolts for the low low price of US $4 and we arrived into Hue, formerly the capital of Vietnam, at around midday. After checking into our hotel we meandered along the beautiful Perfume River, which runs down the middle of Hue, and through the beautiful old buildings and their manicured gardens. Hue, in central Vietnam, was the capital of the Nguyen dynasty, which lasted from 1802 to 1945. They were the last royal family of Vietnam. The key attractions in Hue are the remaining tombs of some of the emperors, and the Citadel which served as business and pleasure quarters for the reigning king. For New Year's Eve we went out with our friends Sib and Steve, ... read more

Hola!!!
