On 10 October 2010, Hanoi celebrated its 56th Liberation Day anniversary. 56 years ago, the French war in Indochina ended after the French troops were defeated on Điện Biên Phủ battlefield in north west Vietnam. The last French soldiers left Hanoi at Long Biên bridge on afternoon 9 October 1954. Next day Vietnamese soldiers entered the city and they were greeted by 20,000 Hanoians standing ... The excavated area of Hanoi citadel was open to public for the first time, although the excavation work has been carried out for many years. Hanoi citadel was just recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site.

So many people came here hoping to watch fireworks, but it was canceled according to public notice the day before. There were some stages by the lake with performance of circus, music and dance.

A long wall with words "Thăng Long - Hanoi 1000 years" was set up near HCM mausoleum. Thăng Long was the first name of Hanoi in 1010.
