On 10 October 2010, Hanoi celebrated its 56th Liberation Day anniversary. 56 years ago, the French war in Indochina ended after the French troops were defeated on Điện Biên Phủ battlefield in north west Vietnam. The French troop left Hanoi after they were defeated in Điện Biên Phủ battlefield. Vietnamese soldiers entered the city and 20,000 Hanoians greeted them.

The excavated area of Hanoi citadel was open to public for the first time, although the excavation work has been carried out for many years. Hanoi citadel was just recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Many visitors went to see the excavated area of Hanoi citadel which was opened to public for the first time.

So many people came here hoping to watch fireworks, but it was canceled according to public notice the day before. There were some stages by the lake with performance of circus, music and dance.

The words on electronic board means "1000 year Thăng Long - Hanoi" and next to it is a long line of paintings drawn by children.

A long wall with words "Thăng Long - Hanoi 1000 years" was set up near HCM mausoleum. Thăng Long was the first name of Hanoi in 1010.

This is a present from Lâm Đồng province in Central Highlands of Vietnam for Hanoi on this special occasion.

I'm so pleased to see these photos of the celebrations. I was thinking of Hanoi on the 10th October (also my birthday). I've alo always wanted to see inside the citadel, so it's great to see those photos too. Thanks so much.
