Hanoi I arrived in Sapa in the Northwest of Vietnam on the 21st December and spent a day there while waiting to catch the night train to Hanoi which I duly did. The hollow in front of the monument is a bomb crater left from the Vietnam war.

A small monument to the 102 victims who were slaughtered on this spot is located on the far left of the picture. The paddy field is still in use today.

Famous for defeating the Mongolian armies 3 times in the 13th Century, most notably at Bach Dang River in 1288. As a result every town in Vietnam has a street called Tran Hung Dao and every street running parrallel to a river is known as Bach Dang.
