Friday, 30 March 2012 - My company organized a one day trip, so I traveled with my colleagues to Thung Nai which is located 100km northwest of Hanoi. Thung Nai means "valley of deer" as deer were coming to this valley in the old days. When Hòa Bình hydropower plant was built in the 1980s, the valley became a reservoir. The mountains were partly submerged in the water and they became islands, as ... Read Full Entry

The fish in the middle is the biggest fish I saw on this trip. It's about 5kg in weight and costs approx. US$30. Fishes sold to tourists are caught in the reservoir.

This tunnel is leading to the generator room. The turbines and generators are placed inside a mountain to avoid bombing, as the first design was made during the American war in early 1970s.

We only can see 8 generators as the huge turbines are underground. The movable crane is used when repair of generators is required.

We bought sightseeing tickets and followed a guide toward one of the 4 tunnels. At the end of the tunnel there are 8 hydro turbine generators.

It was quite dark at 5pm. When we were standing on the main dam, we could see both the reservoir (where we cruised during the day) and downstream of the Đà river.

The management room is upstairs, while the generators are opposite to it. In the poster you can see a symbol of Vietnam and Russia friendship (Vietnamese and Russian engineers are shaking hands).
