I had heard conflicting stories about Halong Bay but it was definitely on the must do list for Vietnam. As you know, pollution and rubbish are twin anathemas to me so I was not too keen to travel with all the big boats. Our lovely hostel in Hanoi, Old Quarter Hostel, recommended Swan Tours to us. Boats that sailed on the quieter Ba Tu Long Bay seemed appealing and off we went with the irrepressible tour guide Mee keeping us entertained on the journey to the port. The rest stop, International Tourist Rest Centre, could have been avoided, but maybe not. Maybe this was a government requirement for all the tour buses to stop at this huge megamarket which sold everything from immense marble statues to small packets of green tea. We were dropped off at ... read more

Welcome to two more weeks of school holidays for Tiffany and Leslie, so as always, we are heading on the road. This is the first entry of a few that is going to bring us around Vietnam from the North to the South. This is also a trip that should never have happened, that I didn't want to happen...but that I'm happily doing today, as this trip has to be done, by Tiffany and Leslie. These two are nearly 13 and 15...and at the speed it is going, they will be pretty soon at University, and I will that day have to negotiate with them to enjoy their company on holidays. Every parents of kids who have left the nest know this...even if you have a great relationship with your kids.Young adults do believe, that living ... read more

From December 12 through 15, Scott and I cruised through Bai Tu Long Bay, a cleaner and far less touristy section of Halong Bay, one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. After doing some research and hearing traveler's stories about how polluted and crowded Halong Bay has become, Scott found out about the Indochina Junk Company, one of the very few companies that host overnight cruises through Bai Tu Long Bay. Though definitely a splurge, we decided that this would be the best way to avoid the crowds and ensure that we'd get the most out of our trip. As soon as our journey began, we knew we had made the right choice. At around 8:00 a.m., we were picked up from our hotel in Hanoi in a comfortable, air-conditioned van, and, after picking up a few ... read more

Picked up by Paloma Cruise & taken to Halong Bay. Bus was full as some had their trip cancelled the day before due to rough seas? Three & a half hour trip. There was another Aussie named Nigel on tour with us. He talked all the way up with my Vicki - non-stop. Hard to say who is the bigger talker. Vicki didn't help as she continually maintained the conversation. Nigel complained about everything, in particular being ripped off money wise. Mr pessimist. He even bought a brand new Nikon SLR camera, and he was disappointed with it - because he only had a standard lens. It would appear that he lost most of his money through regular visits to the brothels, and his lack of understanding of the currency. A regular aspect of his conversation ... read more

The title of the blog may seem a little toungue in cheek however after travelling north through Vietnam every person I met who had been to Halong Bay commented on the level of pollution and dirt and not a lot else really. Im not saying it is the cleanest environment on the earth it is however the largest tourist attraction in Vietnam and when you consider that the majority of junk boats carry between fifteen and thirty passengers the level of pollution per capita increases somewhat. So a little pollution is to be expected, I understand that due to it being a natural attraction the average tourist expects unspoilt landscapes and views, the reality is that this is very uncommon to find. When i arrived in Hanoi i hadn't as yet booked a trip to Halong ... read more

After I was back home from Hà Giang, I booked another tour to the far north (Cao Bằng province), but the tour was cancelled a couple of days before the trip. I decided to change to a 3-day tour to Quan Lạn island. April 30 and May Day are one of the biggest festivals in Vietnam, so hotels are fully booked in advance and prices often go up. I chose to travel on a tour as it was very close to the holiday and it was also more convenient. My 3- day tour (from 28 to 30 April) costs US$150. Quan Lạn is one of the islands in Bái Tử Long bay (north east of Hạ Long bay). We left Hanoi at 5:30am and traveled 216km to Cái Rồng port, then we changed to a speed ... read more
