Had a good night sleep in the Jade Hotel. Quite a nice little property with excellent staff who make up for the lack of elevator and a few other fancy features. Simple breakfast - fresh fruit, toast, omelette, tea, coffee. Our first stop this morning was at the Elephant and Tiger arena (Ho Quyen) just a short distance from the centre. During the mid 19th and early 20th century there were annual "till death" battles between Elephants (noble) and Tigers (evil) for the entertainment of the Emperor and Lords. As the tigers (and sometimes leopards) were often tethered and de-clawed and their teeth filed down - it was inevitable that the elephant would win - often by trampling the tiger to death. Nearby is a shrine where the elephants are buried. From here we continued north-west ... read more

The night train to Hua was "interesting". This time we were in compartments for four, luckily for us we were with Dick and Sarah who we already knew, as there is no privacy within the compartment. Sarah and I went to the station shop to stock up on cold beers, and we broke out the cards, and had a laugh. We had to, the track here is narrower than in U.K, so it really was "shake, rattle and roll", and we had to hold onto the beers. We tested the door, and tested the lock, and the then found we were locked in. We shouted for help and eventually the train guard came and busted us out. Ken and Dick proceeded to fix the lock with a Swiss army penknife. The shaking was so bad it ... read more

My Son is actually near Hoi An, so apologies to those looking for it near to Hue. Can't seem to set locator to Hoi An. Tearing down the QL1A whisked by buses and trucks is not my favourite occupation and hurtling back from My Son in the ever decreasing dusk is far from palatable. My sister's words keep ringing in my ears about the dangers of motorbikes and the horrific accidents that occur. Nevertheless, the trip to My Son was worth it and in our case we returned home unscathed having tasted some of the best pho in an unprepossessing restaurant in a small town just before the turn off to the ruins. We had despaired of finding a coffee in any of the numerous ca phes that we had seen as being a Saturday they ... read more

I'm out of the habit. It's a bit like yoga. Do a little every day and the practice is flowing and beautiful. Stop for a while and you are stiff, the words don't come and the writing is laboured. So forgive me for a less than stunning piece of writing. As the weeks go by I shall be more entertaining I promise! Soft sleeper they said. I rolled over in my bunk nursing a sore hip and wondering what the hard sleeper was like. Thuyet our pregnant nighttime companion lay in the lower bunk, her back rubbed by her faithful husband Vun. This was their first, she had told me. They were going back home for the birth, she leaving her sales manager position in Ho Chi Minh city. They gifted us some lychees and some ... read more

Day 6 Early departure from Hanoi Airport to Hue, Vietnam: Before we depart for our next stop Hue, I must capture a couple anecdotes of naïve Julia and I getting ‘scammed’ at various times while in Hanoi (we did learn our lessons and didn’t have much of a problem the rest of the trip). While in Hanoi Julia discovered she is a terrible haggler of street vendors. We’d seen 3-d pop up Thank You cards with envelopes being sold at every street corner in town. Julia was dead keen to get one, but was not 100% about approaching a vendor to negotiate the purchase of one. Finally, she got up the nerve and asked a ‘kind and generous’ old woman how much as was told the equivalent of one card for NZ$10; which Julia quickly produced ... read more

We decided to leave Hoi An on our 10th day Sunday 5th June. On the Saturday a big storm hit us in Hoi An. The first since we had arrived. We thought how lucky that we hadn't decided to leave on that day. We had been expecting that we might have got a down pour each day this time of year but maybe we were lucky. It had been very hot the whole time though. Hight 30's each day. Our last 2 days in Hoi An were quite relaxing. Having seen all we wanted to, we just enjoyed going to the places we were familiar with, relaxed in our lovely hotel and made arrangements for money and bookings so that we could travel further. Some Dutch girls that we had met in a restaurant earlier on ... read more

4) Phong Nha - bikes, wires, miles The sleeper bus awaits back in Hanoi. Whilst Nicki and I inhale chicken rice at a sidewalk stall (this was definitely a spoon occasion) and sourced an ATM, Michelle was off hunter-gatherer style on snacks (crisps, waters, diet cokes and classic chocolate bars). A hold up on the minibus was then on - the agency had kindly offered to dry our shorts and Smiles' guns&roses* tee (those still wet from Hanoi room washing!) whilst we'd been away, but now they were lost. Together we searched about (knowing shorts were not in abundance with one pair locked in a bag with a wet dog aroma, see part i). No luck, but the agency would send them down on the next bus - they were probably at a launderette. So off ... read more

I was woken at 5:50 this morning by exhortations emanating from the Party Committee building not far away. (These buildings are quite distinct – austere, yellow and white, fronted by a wide red banner.) Later Thuy explained that this loudspeaker service combines news stories for the illiterate and public announcements. (The literacy rate is high in Vietnam.) At breakfast a few of us got talking with a woman who was a professor for an international school teaching a course on environment to 31 students. The course consists of time studying in San Francisco (already done), this month in Vietnam, next month in Morocco and another month in Bolivia. She was startled to learn from us that Hoi An, their destination today, has even more tourists than Hue, not that we had seen much of Hue yet. ... read more
